[RUMOUR] James McCarthy

I'm sure there's a thread about McCarthy already but I can't find it so here's another one.

Watford and Newcastle are both interested in Everton midfielder James McCarthy, with West Ham and Crystal Palace also previously linked.
The Irish midfielder would apparently be available for £20m, which seems a lot and would make him the Hornets' record signing.

He has had a frustrating first season under Ronald Koeman, missing plenty of games through injury and making just seven starts in the Premier League.
That has not stopped Watford and Newcastle keeping tabs on him, according to The Sun, while the Daily Mail have previously reported the two London clubs' interest.

McCarthy is just 26-years-old and would be a shrewd bit of business if the Hornets can convince Everton to lower the reported price tag.
He's been capped 41 times by his country and will be looking for regular football, especially if the Republic of Ireland qualify for next summer's World Cup in Russia.

 

I'd rather spend £20m on a forward, or swap Capoue and cash for him.

 

I give this rumour... 3/10. When have we ever signed anyone after being reported as "joining the race" with a load of other Premier League clubs? We don't get involved in bidding wars, and £20 million seems a ridiculous amount for McCarthy.

 

Regularly injured though meets our standard criteria for signing players.

£20m is two thirds a Jordan Pickford and rather he was our marquee signing instead.

Having blown that sort of money by coming 17th instead of mid table I imagine the new budget means we are once again in the bargain / back catalogue section

 

The transfer for this player would be similar to Cleverley at around £8m, or else he wont be coming to Watford, that's for sure.

 

Even in these inflated times I honestly can't see anyone paying anywhere near that much. Maybe Everton don't want to sell him so slapped a silly price tag on him.
