He’s a dreadful defender. But I think we have largely looked better in games with him involved over the others. At least he’s a decent threat going forward and pops up with the odd goal here and there.
He's up to 76 professional appearances now but rarely looks like it. I'd go as far as to say he's regressed a notch under Cleverley. I agree he has the most potential of all our full backs but at the moment he really can't defend. Doesn't have the instincts to block crosses, stay the right side of his opponents or pass the ball out of defence accurately. Wing back's a different proposition and he's better there (wonky passing aside). Ultimately I can see him ending up as a wide midfielder of some sort in 5 years time.
He's not out of the running if TC keeps playing him ! He's got to better option at RB than an inexperienced poor CB surely ?? If not then use Abankwah as B/up at RB but don't play Ngakia at LB .....
Based on an extremely small sample, Abankwah did far better at RB against Derby from my vantage point in the away end than Andrews did when he replaced him.
...and at home to PNE ...? My point was play a RB at RB and LB at LB, not a RB at LB and a CB at RB.....No-one can argue that the first half against PNE looked a well balanced defence in attack and defence ?
If no one comes in, fitness not withstanding, pick Andrews, Pollock, Ogbonna and Morris every week, let them settle into a 4 and get the hell on with it.
Larouci has proved he can't play LB. That leaves Morris. Not the greatest. Andrews, Festy not RB's. Leaving Ngakia. Not looking good. Not giving up on Abwanker just yet at RB. Poor yesterday but the majority were. But do agree I hate wrong footed players in the full back positions.
Andrews and Larouchi look like they are the typical modern day full back who might be better forward but cannot defend. Bit like keepers and central defenders it seems to be more about what can they do with the ball than are they good at stopping the opposition now?
Up against a different player though for the most part. Abankwah was dealing with a 32 year old chunky winger whereas Andrews got rinsed twice by the sub who was clearly a speed demon. For his faults, one thing Andrews has is pace but that guy burned past him as if he wasn't there and may well have done the same to Abankwah given the opportunity. A bit like if Ince didn't give the opposition full back a problem but then Baah came on and destroyed his replacement.
Has had some mixed games but incredible performance from him today, been a while since we’ve had a centre half this good on the ball
Agreed, I thought he was good again. Much better at CB than FB or WB. His pace gets him out of trouble and he is actually very good with the ball at his feet. Would like to see him sign permanently this summer.
While he may have been signed in somewhat controversial circumstances, there’s a very neat trick to see if the manager actually rates him…he keeps getting picked
His home debut against PNE was a disaster class but since he has been put in the middle he has settled down and looked excellent.
I'm still unsure on his defensive abilities (I don't think he's done too well when tested against decent players), but he's very comfortable on the ball which helps us a lot.
Well people said he couldn't get into the Charlton team last year, and that is simply a fact. Still, that seems odd given he has looked decent for us so far. Early days though - all our fans gave it the big one about Porteous after his first few games. I'm still fairly confident he'll prove to be Pozzo bargain bucket dung in the medium term.
Is he going to be here next season ? Maybe at Charlton he was caught out too much on the ball and got made to pay ..
Poor game from everyone, not just James. However, I reckon it will only be a blip on his part, but sadly others may not improve!!!
Well at least we poached one back from them. Yes we will have paid a huge loan fee for a player who was injured for 6 weeks, but it's the principle that matters.
