Fair play to Jake Daniels for being the first player to openly come out. - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61471763

It's taken far too long, even if shouldn't be needed, for someone to take this step. Hopefully he has broke the stigma of being gay in football and has opened the door for others.

A big and brave thing to do at such a young age.

A smart and lucrative thing to do as well.

Such a brave thing to do at 17 - hopefully others are able to feel comfortable to follow in his footsteps.

As I'm sure everyone is, I'm keen and wary to see the response to this at games. I think there's a big responsibility on people that hear other fans making comments to either report them via the channels the club provide or, if people are feeling brave, to call them out at the time (I do appreciate that this is difficult though). What do other people think the right response is?

I do think the response from the majority will be supportive though and hopefully we will see only a small percentage of "fans" voicing neanderthal views

Not quite "the first". I believe that was Justin Fashanu in 1990.

Did he come out during his career? I seem to believe it was once it finished.
An immensely difficult decision to make and I can only hope he gets the full backing from everyone.

I believe there was a confidential study showing around10% of professional footballers were not heterosexual. To think there arent any at your own club is quite a dull thought.
Even in the general population it's anywhere from 3-8% and much higher in younger people.

I was expecting Troy to be the first to come out at Watford but he never quite got round to it.

The game's problem is its definition of masculinity:

Yes, he did an interview with one of the red-tops when he was at West Ham, I think. He carried on playing for several years after that.

All we need is for a woman player to come out as straight to really move the game forward.

I was skimming twitter. And WD10 or someone had a post about the club reaffirming it’s non-discriminatory policy on LGBT and then something about Sarr.

I thought he had come out for about 2 minutes

Only 3-8%?? From the coverage and profile of homosexuality in the media - particularly the BBC, of course - I'd always imagined the split was around 50/50

Ex Udinese midfielder Jakub Jankto has come out as gay, definitely the highest profile player to do so. Udinese sold him to Sampdoria for €15m, played over 150 games in Serie A and has played in La Liga as well with 45 caps for the Czech Republic.

Good for him! It’s a shame that he’ll inevitably face homophobic abuse but I hope he is happy, however he lives his life.

Hopefully a catalyst for more players to feel they can be open about their sexuality.

    Good news.

Hopefully will lead to an EPL player coming out, then the dominoes will fall it will become completely normalised.
