I would say this was one of the rare occasions where leaving a smaller club for a big club at a young age was probably the right choice. City's youth setup is excellent and let's be honest, he's probably more likely to get a chance in the first team there.

The last time the rules were changed it was to favour the biggestclubs. No need to find a loophole when you write the rules.

I'm not sure the smaller clubs are really missing out though. If a player comes up through the ranks at a League 2 club and sets the league alight with goals what's his likely maximum value? Even if it's £1m can a League 2 club afford to hold out through protracted negotiations to get that amount when half of that is like a lottery win for them? I'm not so sure.

In all liklihood unless there's a crazy bidding war they'll take the second or third offer and be very happy with it indeed. Meanwhile if a player leaves at 15 with a raft of guaranteed future payments linked to specific milestones against his name they may have more chance at developing at a bigger club and thereby achieving those things.

Ivan Toney at Northampton is an example that comes to mind. Northampton on their knees at the start of last season, him scoring goals the year before and looking like a decent prospect and in come Newcastle with £300,000 + clauses and get their man. Can you honestly say they'd have got less through the academy provisions?

I actually think - and this is a bit of a first world problem I grant you - that it's PL clubs like Watford in with a Category B academy and Championship level clubs that lost most from the rule changes a couple of years back. Sancho may or may not have broken through here, we'll never know, but what we can say is that we can afford to resist the low ball offers and to have given him time to develop either way. And then if he was someone a club like Man City wanted I'm sure we'd have been able to get more than £500k for him.

We'll probably get him back on loan eventually.

Can he play the Chalobah role?

Your right in what you say, I'm not up to date with all these acadamies and rules involving the youngsters. And I never thought about transfers involving future add ons with a player reaching certain milestones. It's a shame how money is effecting the game and turning heads before these players have even made something of them selves.
