It would seem that the majority of posters on this forum are indulging their favourite pastime in what might best be described as 'office hours'. The 'drop off' at 5ish is glaringly obvious. This criticism includes both self-proclaimed 'Captains of industry ' and their minions. The concept of office hours ceased to have any real meaning for me a number of years ago. I freely admit I now indulge in what's best described as 'when I feel like it hours' or 'insomniac hours'. Our international colleagues are invaluable in keeping me honest in this process. However, I have to ask this question. Is it reasonable that the rest of you should be buggering about with the nation's welfare when there's a bloody election to be won? Jeez. Ffs. Pozzos?

I manage a team consisting of myself, as long as I get my projects done and delivered on time then everyone is happy. In general there will be weeks or days where I don't post much and some days I post a lot (like yesterday)

You raise a good point and Otter has also made another. Whilst I can't speak for everyone, my circumstances.......

I've had three private sector jobs in my career.

Commuting from 5:45 in the morning, getting to work at 7:30 for a contracted start at 9:00 and finish at 5:15 I'd spend an hour or so when I got in planning the day ahead, catching up on personal emails & web stuff etc. but I'd still be working well in advance of the time I get paid. Often 15-20 mins during my lunch hour whist munching a sandwich at my desk. By the time I got home in the evening19:00 or so, had dinner and tidied up afterwards it was probably 21:00. After spending most of my working day in front of a computer it was the last thing I wanted to do before I went to bed. My job was to run a tech support department. Workload varied according to calls coming in sometimes I wouldn't get time for a toilet break, sometimes I'd have little to do and spent more time on here. Work always came first. This was in the days before decent mobile internet when the forum first started and I was commuting by bus & train. So this is where your 17:00 cut off is.

Following that a year or so of redundancy where after 2 hours a day of job searching I probably posted a lot on here. It's one thing that kept me sane other than the odd bit of consultancy. Being out of work is unpleasant.

My next roll was in the City. Again an early start. Commuting from Meister Manor I'd be at work by 7:00. No internet underground. My job was to process figures from the day before. Depending on trading volumes and complexity I could be finished by 10:00 or 22:00. Even on a slack day where all the work was done by mid morning I'd still need to be about to help out or answer queries until 16:30, then back on the tube home again, not going to play about on the computer having done it all day although I'd normally have to log into work at 23:00 to get the number crunching going for the following day.
I got fired from that job because I objected to the directors renting a boat rather than having cash available to pay peoples salaries - they've now gone bust.
18 months of redundancy again followed where I would either job search, fix up Meister Manor or post on here between 9 & 5.

My current job load is client dependent. A local 9-5 again I arrive an hour before I'm contracted. This is personal time when only I am in the office. I can get twice as much done and when there's a light workload I come on here, like today. Very rarely take lunches but am out of the door at 17:00. I'm currently training up two new people. It's quicker for me to do the work but they would never learn, so generally I am available to answer questions (every 5 mins at the moment). That's why I'm on here a lot during the day.

In all three jobs, I had to sit at a computer. In all three jobs I had slack time which I needed to fill. In all three jobs I did way more than my contracted hours for no extra pay and in all three jobs the work got done before I did anything else.

You raise an interesting point, I've run a lot of stats in the past on the site but never one for time of day but I do agree with you that the traditional concept of 9-5 is pretty much extinct. I've had three 9-5 jobs in my life but to work just those hours would have been a dream.

As a senior developer I work at home almost everyday (I have to commute 2-3 times a month), so I start at 9 and finish 5:30-6 and if I have a moment of inspiration (or a deadline) I can go back to work for a couple of hours after the children are in bed.

The amount of posts that I post has gone down massively as my work has blocked the site. I'm actually having to work now

I laugh at Kelso for starting this, according to this site I joined in June last year and I've posted 670 (this will be 671) he joined in September and has posted 3x as many! And then mentions about people wasting time at work!

Crikey. There's a whole lot more detail being provided on this thread than I'd anticipated! Just to be clear. I wasn't accusing anybody of slacking! The OP was simply a tongue-in-cheek observation. I certainly used to do personal stuff when I had a chance during a slack period at work although the temptations were more limited!

Also apparently evident (without statistical back-up) is a surge when everyone gets up and during the commute. Then again after everyone's eaten in the evening but very few are on here late. In the watches of the night I'm usually alone apart from the company of Philippine. It all changes at the weekend of course with a surge on the match thread about an hour after full time (when those who've been at the match get home).

I've said it before but it bears repeating. This is a great forum and, in my limited experience, far superior to other clubs' sites particularly in the categories that go beyond the specifics of WFC. The guy from Leicester and the Reading guy (who wanted us to all get involved with the Blackpool petition) have said much the same thing.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on here so far. I apologise for occasional long-windedness! Meister et al are to be congratulated on the excellence of the site.

All is in jest. See above! But yes, you're right, it has taken taken over a bit for me as I have lots of time to indulge this new hobby without being concerned about being 'monitored' or worrying unduly that I really should be doing something else.

Apart from trade training in the RAF , I dont think I have ever worked 9-5 , aviation tends to be shift orientated !always prefer night shift when the suits have (upper management etc) have gone and things can be progressed a lot more :)
These days am lucky enough to be in a nice warm workshop and as long as i do 40 hrs a week its up to me! So tend to 10 hrs Monday -thursday leaves friday for OT and weekends clear for footy:)

that said there is a lot of down time waiting for spare parts , engineers reports , Eurocopter reps etc which allows me my internet time :) imho beats working for a living .

No one in Norway works 9 to 5.. not even those that work 9 to 5!

Personally i'm laid off for winter as i work as a greenkeeper/groundsman. You wont find me on here daytime from March through to November time.. unless i'm behaving like the locals ;)

I use to work for the Civil Service, enough said. The only times I had to work long hours and cut my back my internet usage was working in a Ministerial Private Office - more so when the Lords were sitting and the months leading up to the Scottish referendum.
