Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd has admitted that he faces a fight to hang onto prize asset Ashley Young.

The 21-year-old has acclimatised well since making the move with The Hornets from the Championship to the Premiership.

Young's performances have caught the attention of a number of clubs - but despite admitting he may be forced to sell, Boothroyd insists that there will be no January sales at Vicarage Road.

"I have had a chat with Ashley already and we are both of the understanding that it has to be right," Boothroyd said.

"It has to be right for Ashley - first and foremost - and it has to be right for us.

"As far as I am concerned, I have said no, and that will apply in January. But there may come a time when it is a `yes'."

"There is bound to be interest in Ashley, because he is a good player.

"Bigger clubs are always going to be attracted to players who do well under difficult circumstances, and that is exactly what Ashley has done."

If anyone comes in with a bid over £5,000,000 in the summer it's bye bye Ash...

We can’t afford to sell Ash before the summer. Tuesday showed that without him we lack quality in too many areas (particularly when we also haven’t got King).

However I think we should sell Ash in the summer. The money we’d get from staying up, and his sale, would allow us to get very good replacements.

Even if we go down, his sale would allow us to find a good winger, and probably a couple of other players in positions where we lack depth in order for us to push for promotion again.

Un-established Premiership sides that have a few quality players are always seen as cheap targets, but losing Ash doesn’t mean we can’t get a good replacement.
Now for the big difference, how many sides tried to sign any of our players in the 99/00 season? Imo that is the reason why we have a good chance of staying up.

if we can do a deal of £5,000,000 + a decent quality player then it will be a good deal.. i know he will more than likely go in January.. he's too good not too attract the attention of at least one of the big 4, and to be fair to him, no matter how we feel he is of a quality that he could do very well for lets say Liverpool, and would give him more of a chance for international football at top level.. and he deserves it...
Would hate to see him go but his quality is our downfall.

I honestly don't believe he will go in Jan.

Go down and come the summer it may be a different kettle of fish.

Still we should get a few quid as he has a while to run on the contract.

Talksport reckon he could go in Jan ....

If it helps bring in Carlos + Striker + C/Half and we get good pennies then it's fine by me. Better to sell while he is playing well than when his form has dipped and prices may be inflated in Jan.
