Giaretta Interview/club Communication

Discussion in 'The Hornets' Nest - Watford Chat' started by Burnsy, Feb 18, 2021.

  1. We can’t have young unproven players as back up, so its still 24

We don’t have the money to sign a CB better than WTE, CC or CK, you’re just wasting effort dreaming we do

If Hughes goes for £10-£12m then I think it would be prudent to re-invest that in a CB ...... I think long run staying up this season is more critical than ever before for our club ..... and time and time again we neglect the defense ...... We are simply not strong enough in that department to stay up imo

Why can’t we? Had we signed Olise or Guehi, they’d have been classed as young players more than worthy of backup.

You’re just being dismissive because it doesn’t fit your viewpoint. And you don’t know what money we will have given the prospective outgoings or who we can sign on loan for example. Finding CB’s better than Cathcart or Kabasele isn’t really such a hard task.

And I repeat - it won’t be 24 if we sell players which undoubtedly we will.

We might all be laughing at Fletcher but let’s not forget that Dennis is almost as uninspiring.

I can’t believe that he’s considered as “important.” He literally was brought on off the bench for a desperate Cologne team in a Bundesliga relegation battle where he didn’t score a league goal.

Honestly this is brewing to be an abysmal attempt at survival.

I'd rather play Pollock than Kabasele and I'm being deadly serious. At least when Pollock makes a mistake he might learn from it and not repeat it 20 times a season.

I've watched some more clips of Dennis and I like him. Direct and unpredictable, get his head right and he could be useful. Or he's this seasons Ibarbo/Diamanti.

  9. But we didn't sign Olise or Guehi did we.

If it isn't 24 then we have a position without a back up and that would be totally moronic.

Absolutely it doesn’t fit my view - I’m not one of the bed wetters.

I'd take what Giaretta says in public with a big pinch of salt - in another interview not too long ago he said we'd only sign improvements and then brought in Fletcher, Baah and Pollock just after.

  11. Fletcher is an improvement on Success, Gray, and last seasons version of Deeney

Baah and Pollock are projects for the future

But that wasn’t your argument on the face of it? You were dismissive of anyone who is young being able to be good enough to be backup or better than Kabasele/Cathcart. So theoretically had we signed Guehi on loan or sold Hughes and purchased Guehi, then I’ve shown that to be wrong. Just because we didn’t sign him, that means there’s no one else on the planet capable - is that your theory?

And you are looking at the squad too simplistically IMO - there will be players who are fluid who are capable of playing in more than one position. That is less true at CB - where currently we have:
    • WTE who could be good enough - but his distribution is questionable meaning he may not be to a high enough standard. But is obviously worthy of opportunity.
    • Sierralta who looks full of promise and likely to be good enough. But it’s by no means certain.
    • Cathcart. He’s been dependable at times but he barely featured at Championship level and is 12 months older than when he last played at this level.
    • Kabasele. Again, barely featured last season and has ALWAYS had a mistake in him when the team was better than it is now.
    • Matty Pollock - Supposedly promising but we are told wasn’t a standout for Grimsby who were haunted by relegation in L2. It’s a mighty step up in class.
Centre-back is by far the biggest weakness we have in the squad in terms of numbers and ability as it stands. If we made all our CB’s available today, I imagine someone in the bottom half might look at Sierralta - but I doubt many of the others would find a PL buyer at all.

Watch this space…5 year deal, Success 2.0 incoming. Happy to be proved wrong.

In a transfer window that gets a solid C-, this is the one that gives me the worst vibes because we should actually need to play him.

  14. If you don't think Sierralta is good enough for the PL then there really is no point in continuing, because, and sorry for being rude, that is the biggest load of codswallop I’ve heard all day.

I leave you to your damp mattress.

As a MASSIVE Sierralta fan, to be fair to Burnsy here, Sierralta still has the potential to be a Layun or Abdi.

Where on Earth did I say Sierralta ‘isn’t good enough’?! My exact words were he is ‘likely to be good enough but it’s not certain’

Has he played in the PL, yes or no? It’s one thing dealing with Carlton Morris of Barnsley or Matt Smith of QPR. But it’s another thing entirely dealing with PL attackers - so if it’s codswallop you’re looking for, I’d look through your own mind that can’t comprehend that simple point.

You’re right - there really is no point in continuing until you can learn how to read or do maths properly.

I still hold that whilst Sierralta has all the potential to do well at prem level it’s still a question mark. We’ve had players in the past who I’ve expected to go on and smash it who have not quite done the job.

I find myself clutching at Sierralta as a player who can step up but that’s partly because I think this squad overall is so bleak.

Sierralta is going to smash the Prem. In every game he’s played for Chile, he’s been their best defender by far. Up against some of the most talented attacking players in the world in the Copa America and he barely put a foot wrong. My concern is that his contract runs out in 2 years. After dominating the Premier League this season and taking KDB, Kane and co. out of his back pocket, we won’t see another defender of his calibre at our club for decades.

Its a good point, you would hope that they are busy extending his contract as it stands or we risk another Hughes situation next summer. It’s so frustrating to see the likes of Cleverly, Success, Deeney, Sema and Cathcart get bumper extensions while we expose ourself on Hughes and Sierralta.

I hope you’re right. My reservations with him is he’s extremely limited, but he’s exceptional at defending space and winning his aerial duels. His style of play can only be used in a Chile/Watford kind of team (low block, DM screening the defence) but if we continue to set up like we do, he *should* keep a similar level

His passing is also very good. Not his long passing, but his short passing is very accurate.

I’m more concerned with Ekong smashing a pass across the backline like he did multiple time in the championship. We got away with it last season. This season we won’t. I hope that has been removed from his game. I would rather him smash it up the pitch than try to pick out Rose/Masina.

We definitely need to find an experienced centreback to complement Sierralta and someone either with a good read of the game or some pace.

Makes me irritated when we did not bother to go in for Ake. And bothers me that we at least did not flat out offer the eight million Reading were asking for Olise. Palace could well have secured another bargain. Someone in the past like Hinteregger when Frankfurt were in the doldrums would have been another excellent acquisition.

Our scouting team need to buck their ideas up with regards to defensive players.

As for players like Dennis he has ability and I think it is only fair if we give him a chance before getting on his back. Sheffield United were hardly filled with stars but a strong work ethic and sound planning saw them okay in their first season back before they were found out for real lack of quality. Speaking of them have we still not given up on their young centreback ?

The fact that we put in an offer below the £8m release clause shows a real lack of understanding of English markets. Quite embarrassing actually. Reading would have valued him closer to£20m without a clause.

It was a pretty insulting offer really, but apparently it was worth it just in case Reading were skint and accepted it, yet if we’d offered the actual amount (well in advance of palace having a manager) he never would’ve come anyway. Go figure.

Or Palace paid £8m up front which we couldn’t do. ‘Go figure’ your inability to accept that’s a very real, and indeed, likely scenario. ;)

Appreciate that, just seems odd that we made that lowball offer when we knew it absolutely needed to be £8m up front.

Came to this thread to bring up the fact that Hodgson’s said that Giaretta is always in player and team meetings and I was going to mention that this is another lesson that’s been learnt.

BUT then I saw the interview from pre-season where Giarettaraldi said that Fletcher was an important player for this season. I feel this takes precedence.
