    Great Gatsby...

    Visuals - 10/10
    Sound - 8/10
    Music - 1/10
    Plot 0.5/10

I think its the most simple plot line ever!

Rich girl meets poor boy, poor boy doesn't think he can get rich girl. Rich girl marries rich guy. Poor boy cons everyone to become rich. Poor guy (now rich) doesn't get rich girl because he loses his temper.
    No twists, no turns.

Also, I really don't get the whole up to date music in a 1920's film. Very odd.

F.Scott would hope so Legs. ;) The seventies version with Mia Farrow is better but not by much.

    "Starter for 10".

Basically, boy meets two girls, falls in love with the wrong one, then sees sense and ends up with the right one. This time it's in a mid-eighties university setting.

I wonder how many more times this set piece can be trotted out before the film industry gets uncomfortably embarrassed?

Having seen 50+ parodies of Hitler's scene when he loses it over the defence of Berlin, I watched Downfall over the weekend, very good.

    Which one? 1984 or 2010?

I saw the history boys. Similar to the dead poets society. Not sure which one I enjoyed more.

Guardians of the Galaxy - Knew nothing much of it at all before seeing it, was pretty good, one of Marvel's better films in recent years with a simple plot with various characters thrown together.

Hercules - Eh. Enjoyed it to an extent but felt that with an extra 10 or 15 mins they could've made the audience care more about the characters, still decent enough to just watch 3/4 big fights that are a bit over the top.

Avengers 2 - Ok, felt like there was something missing without giving too much away

Last night I watched Coherence, really REALLY enjoyed it. A thinking persons Sci-Fi, yet based around the characters and not the science. Was pleased that I stayed ahead of the game and predicted most of the issues they ran into. RECOMMENDED!!

There's been some good stuff out on DVD recently.

Ex-Machina - Eerie sexy robot lady. I liked the disco bit. 8/10

Kingsman - Austin Powers did it better. I liked the pug and the young lead actor. 6/10

Whiplash - Jazzy drum drama. I liked all the bits where JK Simmons clenches his fist. 9/10

Birdman - So cool it hurts. I liked the bit where it looks like its one continuous camera shot. ?/10 (My other half found it too nauseating so I've only seen about half an hour of it)

Still got Foxcatcher to watch, looking forward to it.

Whiplash was brilliant in my opinion. The writer and director is only 30, has a huge future ahead of him.

Agree. JK Simmons dominated the screen, but the secret to the film's tension and entertainment comes from the director and the editor. Presenting it like an action/thriller/boxing film doesn't allow you pause and think 'why should I give a toss if these unlikable people perform jazz well?'
