Watched 'Killer Elite' on Film4 the other night. Very Boys Own, but was only really enjoyable for the setting and period, pretty well done that.

But reading the claims about its authenticity are highly confusing/weird. The film claims to be based on a true story. Then it turns out the writer of the book, Ranulph Fiennes, started by being coy about whether it was fact or fiction, then said it was all fiction, then said that the families of the dead named in the film signed every page of his original manuscript. They then attack him for denigrating the names of their dead relatives, the SAS do something very unusual for them (namely by speaking to the media) and say it's all bullsh!t and decry Fiennes for using the names of the dead and the regiment to sell books.
All pretty weird. The film was all explosions and mumbling hard men, vaguely watchable, but not great. Clive Owen is on form and a mighty good actor IMHO.

Triangle. I did not have high hopes for this film, but it was actually pretty damn good. Highly original, very twisty and tightly executed. Well recommended

It's an oldie but we watched 'Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines' last night and it was a hoot. Terry-Thomas was superb but this sneering line of Robert Morley's was my favourite:
"The trouble with these international affairs is they attract foreigners..."

Watched a fair few films recently starting with Godzilla - felt lile Pacific Rim vs. Godzilla almost a sequel rather than a reboot. 6/10

Guardians of the Galaxy - Loved it, one of those super hero films filled with anti heroes. 9/10

Edge of Tomorrow - a lot better than expected, almost believable in the circumstances. 8.5/10

The Purge: Anarchy - Different from the first and a good action film. 8/10

it wasn't even a movie. it was a pilot for a rubbish tv series so it didn't have any kind of resolution e.t.c just lots of setting up of various jumping points so they have somewhere to go should they ever get picked up by a network

Saw 'Home' yesterday. Amusing enough for the adults and the two 8 year olds we were accompanying loved it.

I've withheld judgement on the Hobbit movies, hoping that something redeeming would come out of it. So I finally saw the last one.

    Garbage.

I hate Peter Jackson for doing it and I hate Warner Bros. for allowing it all to happen. He needs a swift kick in the gonads.

Another unfortunate reboot on the way with Terminator Genisys:

I think he did a pretty good job all things considered and the limited material of the book. Okay some things were unpalatable such as the romance between Kili and his own creation Tauriel (considering what had happened in Doriath for those who know their Tolkein) but I enjoyed all three. The material remains in The Silmarillion or Unfinished Tales to do an extended series. It might not please purists but it would lend even greater life to the world Tolkein created albeit with a great deal of help from the Norse and German sagas. Something like Narn I Hin Hurin for example.

After resisting them when they originally came out, I'm now trawling through the Harry Potter books and films with my 8 and 11 year olds. Actually enjoying them more than I expected. Have just watched 'The Order of the Phoenix' so no spoilers for the rest please. And while, generally, I'm quite strict about following film age guidelines, so far there's been nothing in the '12' films that has made me uneasy about either of mine watching them.

As the films go on they get a bit darker & could be a bit scary for a young child, but nothing rude at all.

Sorry, I thought everyone knew that. It was on the news and stuff. I've not read any of the books or seen any of the films. I don't even know who Dumbledore is. The Simpsons even did a whole episode parodying it.

Just watched Filth, didn't get a chance to go when it was out at the cinema so I picked it up on DVD. Safe to say it won't be on hard rotation because it's so oppressively grim and well, filthy. James McAvoy plays a tortured soul very, very well and I loved the fantasy sequences, especially with Jim Broadbent's character.

8/10 - Sleazy, surreal and very funny in the first half followed by a descent into darkness that was tough to watch at times.

Over the bank holiday weekend I watched a couple of films on Netflix that I'd never seen before. Layer Cake and Limitless, both were very good films and worth watching.

The Water Diviner - I really enjoyed this film, there were some great scenes that tug at the heart strings. The film is let down by some naive shots and cgi. Still worth a watch.

From the title I was expecting this to be a documentary about a rare birth defect, or a film about a very odd super-hero.

How the f*** do people come up with this kind of plot? And enough people presumably watch it for the producers to make sequels !

I suppose this is technically in the wrong thread as it is definitely a film I shall never see.

I haven't dared read this thread since Moog's spoiler re Harry Potter (& apologies for getting cross with you, Moog, but I thought you'd done that on purpose; I now see you didn't). I know I am the only person in the world to have got to 2015 without knowing any of the Harry Potter plots or twists but I genuinely had no interest when it first came out - the hype irritated me so I studiously avoided all things Potter. Today, though, the mini HHs and I finished the last book and so now have only 'The Deathly Hallows' left to watch. Verdict: thoroughly enjoyed the series &, for those with kids, it's a great collection of books to read & films to watch together. Word of warning though: Forza is right, the books/films get darker (& sadder) as they go on and while my 8 year old has been fine, my more anxious 11 year old is finding getting to sleep tricky, post Potter.

Yes that is the one directed by the great Peter Weir. It's a bit over romanticized what with the campaign a turning point in Antipodean national identity (and a stick with which to beat us with) but a clear frank look once again at what war does to 'ordinary' people caught up in it.
