Yes but both were good enough to have been more than once. They both lacked that killer instinct to capitalise.

Seems they decided to go nuclear and question Hamilton and the FIA's motives and sporting integrity in their statement to the stewards, something which the FIA statement suggests the stewards would have addressed had the appeal have gone ahead.

All this nonsense to try and cover for the fact Max is so myopic he couldn't just settle into 2nd through Copse and either trust his team to put him back into the lead through the pit stops or take a smallish cut to his significant lead in the driver's championship, assuming he couldn't overtake in the race.

Seems they were pushing for a grid downgrade for the next race, (which is on a track notoriously difficult to overtake on).

Well if Perez was any good he could out qualify and keep ahead of Hamilton?

Karma (aka Bottas) strikes Red Bull at the first corner. Tee hee.

Firstly, sad news to come out of Brands Hatch yesterday. Marshals are the unsung heroes of motorsport and have no doubt saved countless drivers' and spectators' lives by fearlessly putting themselves in danger. To hear one lost their life is heartbreaking.

Onto the F1, it's kind of ironic today's crash was caused by Bottas myoptically trying to brake late after losing some positions in wet conditions with wet tyres. It seems its catching.

Regarding the previous incident, I think both drivers were at fault (Hamilton is so myoptic he couldn't wait until a safe overtaking point - he had the whole race, Verstappen defended too agressively) - however watching the slow motions Hamilton half pulled out of the move, I think if he'd have stayed in or pulled out completely then the accident wouldn't have happened. Therefore it's about 60/40 Hamilton's fault. What it does do however is highlight how stupid some penalties are, if you end somebody's race but still win then clearly the penalties aren't doing their job.

But surely as in most sports the penalty is based on the infringement itself, not the result of the infringement?

Mercedes need to sack their strategists. They’re having an awful season.

Surely the severity of the infringement depends on the situation? So contact on a hairpin isn't that severe, whereas contact on the inside on a high speed corner should be harshly punished. If you make contact in a high risk, high speed area then you deserve a big punishment - safety is THE most important thing in motorsport. I've seen too many drivers die, been to funerals of some of them... Personally I don't think a 10 second for a very dangerous accident is harsh enough, it needs to be discouraged.

In other news, this looks like it'll be an interesting race. I'm sure LH and MV will be up near the front by the end but they'll have to fight their way there.

No disagreement on that… but that’s different to what you said in the bit I quoted :)

That was so bad. Not even considering how hard it is to overtake in Hungary.

I know that Merc can't communicate with Hamilton on the formation lap, but the strategist should have made it clear that he would have to pit on a bone dry lap in the first few laps, that there was no rain forecast and that they would be ready for him.

I see your point, but the implication in the first post is consistent with the second, just not expanded upon.

Russell was radioing Williams on the formation lap and I’m pretty sure they acknowledged his message. Not sure why Mercedes/Hamilton couldn’t do the same, with him remarking how dry the track is and something as simple as ‘copy’ meaning come in or ‘acknowledged’ meaning stay out used in response.

Still, they got the strategy right just now. Avoiding an on track scrap with Verstappen is invaluable.

  22. Huge balls up, what were Mercedes thinking?

    Wacky race !

Alonso would have be delighted to hold Hamilton off and letting his team mate win.

You know it’s an unusual race when Williams are beating Red Bull.

It's clear there's a major issue with communication in Mercedes. As you say, they just needed a plan pre-formation lap, and they didn't create one.

After the first corner, Hamilton should have won that race with his eyes closed. They need to review what's going wrong despite the excellent strategy to pit early, as there is no way Red Bull should be at all relieved after both their drivers were taken out at corner 1.

Still, made for a very entertaining race.

    Another Mercedes **** up!!!

Why was Hamilton the only one to start from the grid after the Red Flag?

After the major misjudgment at the standing start, it was some drive from Hamilton. Not sure if the driver or team (or both) were to blame for the balls up on that. Really unlucky for the Red Bull drivers and Norris. Very eventful race and a rookie winner. Today’s events are not going to ease the tensions between the top two teams, which makes it a more interesting spectacle.

Red Bulls whining is making this season very enjoyable. Shame they've now got 4 weeks to get their act back together.

I would love to see a live interview with Horner just now. He would need to be restrained, I would imagine.

A real shame for Vettel and a rookie error from Aston Martin. From my crude calcs they use up about 2 litres a lap at race speed, so if AM had told Seb to stop around T1 he'd have had plenty of fuel left - somebody clearly dropped the ball, probably because they were too busy celebrating!

Well that was a fun qualifying session wasn't it? Russell in P2, absolutely incredible. Good to see Danny Ric in P4 too.

Felt sorry for Lando, I doubt a more experienced driver would've started a flying lap in those conditions - Vettel certainly wouldn't judging by the radio! Long night for the McLaren engineers ahead.

Let's hope for more rain tomorrow.

Two laps to fleece the crowd. An absolute farce as described by Hamilton.
