Rather concerning to see how dominant the Mercedes and Mercedes 2 teams were. F1 desperately needs some leveling of the field to make it more exciting. Bottas hardly did himself any favours again. A pretty poor number two. Agree with scummybear Russell was nowhere in the awful Williams yet was on the verge of a race win.

I think half the problem is that the rules are too complicated now. It takes a massive team of engineers to squeeze every ounce out of them and those without the head count just can't take advantage. Not sure simple budget caps will be the answer either.
There are plenty of competitions where there's a level playing field of cars F1 should be the pinnacle of technology imho. Lets just go 1 litre engines with a max 75Kg of standardised fuel, Hybrid with a max level of Kwh Storage. Standardised tyres and min & max car weights and sizes. Anything else goes and when the cars go to fast cut the engine size and fuel reserves.

Will the new rules and guidelines make any difference when they come in to place in 2022?

    Guess not ...

Is Hamilton back this week-end or is Russell getting a 2nd shot at winning a GP, because he was so unlucky not to win last week-end?

He's back. Glad he's alright but will probably be a dull race with him back.

Last race for a few of them before they move teams or are left without a team.

Hope Sainz enjoys his last day out with a decent car!

I'm probably one of Sir Lewis Hamilton's most vocal/consistent critics on here, but he definitely deserves SPOTY and a knighthood more than plenty of others who have been awarded them. So congratulations to him.

SPOTY was a given. Not that I bother watching that crap anymore. It's all about celebrity rather than the decent review of the sporting year it used to be.

But Knighthood? Yes he's one of the best motor racing drivers this country has every produced. I'd say up there with Colin McRae. But I think a Knighthood is taking it a bit too far. Murray Walker should probably have received one first.
As far as I'm concerned a knighthood should be bestowed on someone for doing nigh on a lifetime of outstanding deeds. Going above and beyond etc. A history of selfless acts. I;m not knocking Hamilton. I think he's great but a knighthood in 20 odd years maybe, now is a bit previous.

In sporting terms all he has to do is beat one other driver, normally the underwhelming Bottas.

True although Verstappen would be more of a test in a more reliable car .

One of the greatest rally drivers passed away the other week from the nation that produces them on a regular basis. Hannu Mikkola. An acknowledged legend and gentleman of the sport.

Audi upstaged the traditional manufacturers with their four wheel drive Quattro a design classic. Just about remember the RAC Rally of GB on Top Gear as a small child and the likes of Marku Alen, Stig Blomqvist and Juha Kankkunen. William Woolard presenting and most of all the theme music from the German group Propaganda which I found out many years later.

Big crash in round two of the Formula E championship in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. Driver unhurt thankfully. Mercedes and Jaguar sharing the spoils from the first two races. Undoubtedly this formula will get more and more attention as manufacturers move to producing all electric vehicles as Volvo have announced the other day.

The voice of F1 for me growing up alongside James Hunt. Honestly thought he would make the century. A fount of knowledge on all things motorsport from F1 to hill trials. Unique, eccentric at times but always endearing in persona and commentary style. Will be greatly missed like all the great commentators. His father being one of the earliest sports radio broadcasters.

    RIP Murray.

Him and James Hunt were the ones in the late 80's and early 90's that were the sound of F1 to me. I remember in 93' being upset even at a youngish age when Hunt passed (I'm too young to have seen him race), and now Murray has gone. Really sad this evening about this news.

Verstappen takes pole ahead of Hamilton and Bottas. Impressive efforts from Gasly in the Alpha Tauri and Alonso for Alpine. Perez just failed to make Q3. Nice touch from Williams on their steering wheels.

And I've got to stop because I've got a lump in my throat is emblazoned from Murray's commentary as Damon Hill won the world title at Suzuka in 1996. Unfortunately Russell is no longer in a Mercedes and Williams look miles off the pace again.

Red Bull have been better in testing than Mercedes so maybe will be more competitive?

  21. The rule change has caught Mercedes out and suits the high rake RB more that's all. It has looked a dog through testing and FP but I'm sure they will sort themselves out over the next couple of races.

I wonder if the stewards should have acted more swiftly for both Mercedes use of turn four in an illegal manner ? Might well have affected the final outcome. Hamilton now becomes leader in laps in front in F1. Norris had another impressive drive along with Tsunoda.

Vettel ought to retire. Mazepin only in F1 due to his financial backing had a shocker. Michael junior will be toiling this season but outqualified him. I was hoping the field might be a little closer this year but it looks more of the same. Ferrari and McLaren are nowhere near the two teams at the top and sometimes I wonder what the purpose of Haas or Williams is. Just to make up the numbers ? It must be soul destroying to know you do not have a prayer of getting a point. Three and a half seconds off the pace per lap. Which is why I find Formula E more exciting.

Watched Rush again last night on the BBC. Terrific film. Daniel Bruhl and Hemsworth senior did a fantastic job especially Bruhl and Ron Howard with getting most of the details accurate. What made it more poignant after watching it the first time when it came out is the passing of Lauda. Two contrasting approaches. Adversaries who became friends. Both now departed.

'I'll see you on raceday Champ.' Hunt 'You will champ.' Lauda

Yes - impressive start from the rooie and for Mclaren to edge Ferrari.

Agree on Mazepin - 3 spins in 2 days already.

Williams will hope their new investment will help them somehow whilst Haas seem to have given up on this season already.

It’s amazing how people still think Hamilton is overrated.

He’s consistently competitive, even when he has absolutely no right to be.

  27. He’s one of the all time greats, not because of what he does in the best car but because of what he does when he doesn't have the best car

That was the first race I actually watched in a few years. I think I was drawn to it because of the idea that there may actually be a bit of competition at the front, rather than Mercedes lapping everyone whilst nursing their tyres on a low engine mode for 60+ laps.

One of the big criticisms of Vettel that I remember was that he didn't seem to have any ideas when he no longer had an incredibly dominant car. If this year's Red Bull is faster than the Mercedes, then it'll be interesting to see how Hamilton/Bottas and the Mercedes strategy team react. They've been so dominant for so long, could they be a bit rusty when it comes to actually having to fight?

Same here. As long as it's close I'll watch, as I expect many millions of others around the world will also do. It was an excellent race and the commentary I thought was just perfect.

  30. In the 30 years I've watched it F1 has always had a dominant team. McLaren > Williams > Ferrari > Red Bull > Mercedes. To expect it otherwise is wishful thinking.

Even yesterday's competitive finish was artificial in a way. If Mercedes hadn't stuffed up Bottas' pit stop Verstappen would have never been able to run longer in the middle stint. That was what created the situation where he was hunting down Lewis at the end.

I agree. As a non English man, I cannot understand why Hamilton does not appear to get the recognition in England that he deserves. Whatever you say about the sport being more about the machine than the man, I think he has to go down as one of the all time greats of sport, even better than Eddie Irvine or John Watson.

Can anyone explain why drivers that have been lapped were allowed to un-lap themselves before the restart after the race had been red flagged?
