I used to watch it back in the day for Wogans cynical but humorous commentary regarding the voting .
Eventually he couldn't hide his annoyance and it was downhill from there for me .

Haha, it most certainly was not a great song, but also by far from the worst and the petty determination by all the EU voters in the Eurovision Song Contest to give our song even one vote, is absolutely hilarious.

It's a song contest, not the cod wars!

What are they like, as they stick their tongues out at blow raspberries at us like children.

Our guy James, made them look so unbelievably childish, as he stood up and laughed at them. Bravo!

    Hilarious!

Same. That and the crowd reaction was one of the great TV moments.

Sh*t song + ugly fat lad + no presentation effort + everyone hates us = 0.

It was a **** song. Our guy was among 6 not to get any public votes. The Italian song was the best, and the French song was good too. Fair result.

Thought the standard was decent this year. Only a couple of stinkers of which ours was not one.

Unfortunately politics and a slightly flat performance did us in, but zero was harsh. At least we don't have to host next year. Time to stop bankrolling it I think.

Norton, once he'd had a couple was excellent as usual and as a bonus I won a sweepstake for picking 3 of the top 4.

To get fewer points than Germany, who put up what was essentially a joke entry, was pretty damning of our popularity across Europe.

Germany’s entry was one of the worst in recent memory.

We didn't deserve too many points, but to lose to that is unpalatable.

Also, as I put in the shout box…

I find it so strange that there are so many voters out there that watch Eurovision and vote for the rock choices.

Who on earth watches Eurovision that’s so into rock music, when 99% of the contest is cheesy pop ballads.

It was a bit like an Italian Limp Bizkit/ Linkin Park. Finland scored massively well with the public too.

It seems most years the public votes en masse for rock.

I really dislike the forced 'cynicism' of the commentary. It's so rude and disrespectful and it means you can't properly hear what is going on.

BBC thinking - gay people like eurovision, so let's have a gay commentator. People used to like wogan's disrespectful and slightly xenophobic comments, so let's have ALL disrespectful and catty comments. During the voting, nobody could wear the right clothes. "Ooooooh! She's made an effort!!!" Norton repeated boringly and insultingly as each country's person appeared. Well what are they going to wear? Jeans?

Fittingly, we had a daft lady in a silly chicken dress who giggled stupidly and told the watching millions that she had no idea of the difference between French and Dutch. Well, who cares anyway, right guys?!?

I fell asleep for most of the songs, so I couldn't tell you if the winner was any good, but I did quite like the San Marino one - adrenalina. But that didn't get many points either. I also liked the Russian lady who opened the door in her dress. I have often opened the door in my underpants.

What made you think it would get any better in General Banter?

Apparently, we only pay about £310,000 to enter which is probably far less than it costs to make an episode of Casualty, so even when adding cost of getting our people over there and for Norton, it probably still isn't that much.

I'm not sure how our jury voting was influenced by brexit, if at all, as we gave France top marks, I believe.

But whilst our EU neighbours continue to be so petty and childish (particularly since 2016) by ensuring we get very few or no jury votes, maybe we should do something equally petty and childish, we should try and ban them from using English as their choice of language in the songs or by the presenters, that will stuff 75% of the entrants, and will ensure hardly anybody will understand the words for about 3 hours.

    That'll show 'em! :p:p:p

Personally, I'm content to watch the annual UK bashing from the EU - it's a gentle reminder.

    Ah, bless!

I think the better question would be to ask why the Eurovision Song Contest thread is not in the Politics section, it would make more sense.

Funny year to post this, given the top 3 songs were all not sung in English?

Good job we don’t take all this too seriously given our recent record!

All a bit of harmless fun in the middle of all the serious stuff .

So why didn't we get any votes from the dozen or more non-EU countries then?

It's a silly, fun and, for some, entertaining. The UK haven't come close to winning it for a long time. A lot longer than Brexit has been a thing.

It seems to me that some of those that "won" Brexit seem far less able to move on and prefer to keep petty squabbles and the EU bashing going for some reason. I suspect most on here would prefer that is kept to the politics section where it has a more appreciative audience.

I think Amanda Holden showed perfectly why we are disliked by EU and non EU countries alike.

Only the top 10 in each country's voting get points. Can you honestly say the UK entry was anywhere near the best 10 out of 26? We didn't get any points because we were CLEARLY in the worst 50%, and everybody noticed.

His vocals were off, the staging was appalling, the music was alright but was lacking any impact. If it had better production it might've covered his vocals, but it didn't. My family and I score each act on Song, Entertainment and Visuals... He didn't get any points from is either! We just don't put any effort in, Italy are one of the automatic entries too, and the past 2 years they've had bloody good songs (Soldi in my opinion is one of the best Eurovision songs for decades).

Overall I thought it was good year, the start was slow but definitely picked up. My favourite by far was Finland, with an honourable mention to Ukraine and Switzerland.

Yes and on the politics thread you’ve failed to answer why it is that 14 non EU countries also failed to give us a point, including Australia, to whom we are giving an excellent trade deal for their farmers. Surely if it’s all politics that would count?

Our song was awful, the dregs. The bloke was an embarrassment. Sure he was a sport, but it’s a singing and writing contest. I wouldn’t have voted for him, so why would any of those countries?

This is you projecting your animosity towards Europe. Not very pleasant.

Have to admit, I loved Ukraine's song. But felt the last minute of the song blew it for them. Had they kept the dark synthy stuff the whole way through, they might have got closer.

I don't get it though. Many of the voting countries are non EU - Norway, Switzerland, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Israel, Australia etc. Yet we didn't get thrown a bone from any of them either.

It wasn't a great song or performance, but it wasn't the worst, or even in the bottom 10 worst.

I simply think that we, in the UK will never understand the passing zeigeists of European music tastes. We either push out middle of the road pop, like this, or take a swing and a miss at a gimmick, based on a previous winner.

The winners are usually something new with some added weight from a cause, staging, gimmic or other factor.

I certainly think we are unpopular, but Israel can't be flavour of the month nowadays but they got a decent mid table finish.

It's just not something we will ever understand, unless we somehow stumble upon it by accident.

Perfectly hideous Euro trash nonsense by Ukraine, Serbia and Azerbaijan did OK, so we clearly are never going to understand the mentality of juries and public who vote for them.
