My point is that we schedule Derby games at 12 for a reason. The authorities and all those involved should have remembered why we do this, and that the biggest game in 55 years, bigger than any Derby game scheduled at 8 would’ve had the obvious consequences that scheduling games at 12 helps them to avoid.

But I suppose the issue is it wasn't confirmed as 'the biggest game in 55 years' until 4 days before. And that's far too late to change the kick off time, line up sufficient police officers etc.

Terrible scenes on Luton high street today as people try to access Poundland.

What are they all doing in that first bit they seem to all have fallen on the floor together and are incapable of getting up?

I was there on Sunday. Crowd was huge on wembley way and it felt like a party atmosphere. Yep there were a few idiots lobbing cans in the air and others climbing lampposts but never felt it was anything like previous trips watching england, albeit they were abroad. Inside the ground I saw no issues at all. I've seen the videos and don't condone the actions of those breaking down cordons and trying to get into the stadium without tickets, or those giving them a kicking, but it really was a very small percentage

Yes I know but we can't ask FIFA to muck around with their viewing schedules off the back of a fear of local hooliganism because we've qualified for the final. How bad would that look when we want to host a future WC ? They have WW viewings to take into account and the final has to be at peak WW viewing time not just to avoid english hooligans like a WFC vs Luton game.

I know, I wasn’t suggesting they did for obvious reasons just that 5pm would obviously have been better. Moreover, it was really just the point that the police insist on certain games happening at midday, so if they know a big game is happening 8 hours later than they would like if they had a say in it, surely they need to adjust accordingly.

As I say, I know that. But it prepares the police we’re woefully underprepared for a game they would probably schedule 8 hours before if they had the choice themselves.

The global audience thing doesn't make sense. Most of Europe is an hour or two ahead of us and surely the tournament has little appeal to the Americas, where the Copa was underway? They'd be the only beneficiaries of the later kick off and to the detriment of most of the target in Europe.

It's not just about the kick off time, it's the identity of the finalists too. If that was an 8pm ko between Italy and Denmark there'd have been no issues at all and a need for only very minimal policing. Whereas England playing multiplied the numbers attending by probably a factor of 5 and, realistically, probably meant they'd have needed 3,000+ police officers to completely control the crowds around the stadium, set up robust checks etc. And even in London it takes a vast amount of planning and duty changes to muster that number of officers and would be a big waste and impact on normal policing activity if (as is likely) England didn't make the final.

I've not been to one tournament (and I've travelled to most over a 30 year period) where there wasn't some serious trouble involving French, Russian, German etc fans that didn't involve the English. It happens every time you get a mix of alcohol and football. It's just these scenes are rarely reported by our rags. I will say it again that the incidents being reported are by a very small percentage of the people at the ground, is no different to what happens at any other tournament by other nations and being blown out of context. And I really cannot believe there were thousands upon thousands of ticketless fans that got into the ground

Before the final our record was only marginally worse than Italy.

England won 3 out of 9
Italy won 4 out of 10

I was there on Sunday and thought it was a really nasty atmosphere, usually love the walk up Wembley way, been to loads of important England games around the world and really felt uneasy, I really did worry if any Italians or gangs of Italians showed up, even the atmosphere in the pub before was not nice, the tube was horrible, getting In Was a nightmare I seemed to be the only one with a ticket, not experienced getting into a ground like that since the 1986 cup final, felt sorry for the stewards, when I did get in it was like a terrace and no one in their seat, the last two games, Denmark and Germany loads of spare seats around me, there was easily 800000 plus in there so it was not a couple of hundred got in it was 20000 plus, spoke to someone and he said he gave the security/ turnstile supervisor £50 and got waived in. Friends all over the ground had a similar experience, one friend in the disabled bay said it just got full of scouser smoking dope and doing coke and the stewards could not do anything, I would not in their shoes, what they get paid it is not worth confronting some coked up pissed scum bag.

I really did not enjoy Sunday, I was at the World Cup semi v Croatia we lost that but loved the experience.

Really thought we would win it on pens

Actually the most embarrassing 'pwoper nawty' I ever saw was Bradford City's fans' arrival at Vilnius airport for the Intertoto Cup match against Klaidpeda's Atlantas in 2000. Vilnius club Žalgiris's 'crew/firm' Pietų IV ('North IV' the bit of the ground they stand in) came along to 'support' their brothers in teaching these English hooligans whose 'turf' they were visiting (thugs were openly saying this when interviewed in the days before on the TV news). The vast majority of Bradford's finest turned out to be... 54 supporters mainly comprised of old codgers bringing their grand-kids to see City's first 'European' game. This so enraged Pietų IV that they immediately set about beating the shyte out of the Atlantas crew, before turning on the gendarmes from the Valstybės sienos apsaugos tarnyba (State Border Guards) before spilling out into the car-park and fighting amongst themselves...

Sterling was trying to win abut 3 penalties in the game I think.

There was one time when he was just trying to hold onto the ball hoping for a touch when as pass was the better option.
