Yep, was just responding to the question about Troy's comment. Personally I'm happy to see him try and clear it rather than do a Cruyff turn on the edge of his 6 yard box
Such an important signing, the bloke had transformed our team. The defence clearly trust him and he deals with everything. Really smart signing.
Just does simple thing simply. No histrionics, no gobbing off, no flapping. All makes a big difference which will never show up on the stattos’ charts and graphics.
Had hardly any saves to make, but just so assertive! Could have been a very different game with Bachmann in goal
His decision making is on another level to Bachmann. He sees the danger and gets the ball out quickly. Almost boringly. Bachmann sees the danger, looks around a bit, has to find the ball, trips over it and passes it to an opposing player, concedes a goal and then blames one of the defenders and/or the ref before getting struck with an injury and rolls around holding his face. I’ll take boring.
How many times did Selvik come out for a ball? Most of them were very easy for him, but I bet Bachmann wouldn’t have even come for some of the easier ones
Took quite a heavy hit from that early cross he cleared at the back post. Got back up after a quick pause, dusted himself down and kept coming out to claim high balls. You just know that if that had been Bachmann (if he'd even come for it in the first place) he'd have stayed down a lot longer, carried on his histrionics for some time afterwards and then stayed glued either to, or behind, his line.
That's what you think, data so far agrees that he's a big upgrade over Bachmann (although is only 5 games!)
No shock to see Calamity Dan high on the pass into danger metric, and I expect he’d be equally as high on the slice into touch metric as well. Both of which definitely play into the general sense of nervousness that his presence inspires amongst his defensive unit.
The sc*m’s main game plan pretty much went out of the window when they hit a cross to the far edge of the 6-yard box and he (wait for it) came off his line (!) and punched it away despite being clattered. We’ve been missing that for a long while, and boy does it make a difference to the approach of the whole defence. EDIT: see SLB’s post above.
The % gets lower as you move towards the outside, so Bachmann's is actually lower than Selvik's. I wonder how much of that is down to instruction though (they were clearly told to do so from every goal kick yesterday).
Damn it! For a moment here I thought I was the cleverest man alive. Great minds think alike n all that.
Hopefully he can keep up the good work so far . https://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/24987980.selvik-stresses-made-choice-join-watford/
The improvement since Selvik and Doumbia have started is amazing. Selvik has bought in such a calmness and it's definitely showing in our defensive displays. Abankwah just keeps getting better. Louza is making me look a right idiot with his displays. But for me Doumbia is a joy. He is going to be some player. His touch and layoff for the second against the scum was on another level. Just desperate for him to get his goal now. He does everything I expect Bayo to do but Doumbia just does it naturally with more heart, determination and talent.
I think he's done quite well but touch and level for the second vs the scum being on another level is ridiculous. It was well done but let's not get carried away, being able to control the ball and lay it off should just be part of being a footballer at any level. I think people are putting this kid on a pedestal at the moment especially as he's done nothing so far except being better than Bayo!
Of course it should be the basics of any footballer. But we've all witnessed that this isn't the case. Yes maybe I'm getting overly excited about Doumbia but that's not a bad thing. He has single handedly bought my enthusiasm back for watching Watford again because he is simple doing the basics of what a centre forward should do for a team and I'd simply not witnessed that since Pedro left. We may disagree which is only fair and I take on your comments but in all honesty I believe it was a different level. He took control under pressure and passed into space where Dave didn't even have to break stride. He's won himself two penalties through pure endeavour to be first to the ball. His chances infront of goal will come but in my honest opinion our upturn in form is because he Doumbia is in the side. Heart, desire, passion, work rate, running the channel, control. This has given the delivers of the ball more options.
Doumbia is certainly very promising for his age and looks a good aquisition. Unfortunately I expect, like Pedro, we will only see a couple of his formative years before he is sold on to a prem club. PS remember this is the Selvik thread !
I would say Selvik is the bigger reason for the upturn in form. We look far less panicked when defending
Doumbia is a far more talented footballer than Bayo for sure and he’s helped us immensely, but he’s still a bit inconsistent (as you’d expect from one so young!), but Selvik has been almost faultless for us so far
