Eastern European Players

For me it would be anywhere that was once behind the iron curtain. Could also argue some of the balkan states as well.

 

I have to say this discussion about what constitutes Eastern Europe is more interesting reading than most of our match day threads this season!

Learnt some cool stuff about Greece as well.

 

Jure Travner, Slovenian defender spent 2 years with us without making an appearance before being released in 2011. Went to St. Mirren I think

 

Cyprus is even further east. If anything, we're a middle eastern country. I think geographically we are arguably (certainly east of the Bosphorus) in Asia but culturally in Europe.

 

Tricky one. Western Ukraine is no further east than most of Romania, all of Bulgaria & parts of northern Greece. Do we use language? Mainly Slavonic, but then Romanian is a Romance language. Alphabet? But then Serbia & Montenegro use Cyrillic despite being further west than Poland. Religion? Again, Serbia is Orthodox & Poland Catholic.
I'm not sure there's any easy shorthand that is in line with current realities.

Best solution is to blame the Greeks for being so far east, having their own alphabet (selfish bastards) and being Orthodox, whilst also giving us the concept of democracy.

 

Stop this thread immediately ! Any of Putin’s ‘bots reading this thread will relay that the huge uncertainty of this debate means that any county east of France is fair game for his plan to restore the east/west border to its’ rightful place.

I know where Albania is, but if you count ex-iron-curtain countries as 'eastern', then Abdi, The Master. 'Though hasn't he become a citizen of Switzerland?
