The fact that legal action is being threatened doesn't bode well considering that chap was offering to meet forum members with his mates in the bunker to talk.

 

If as they claim they don’t get paid by the club, then unless they’re Elon Musk or have a screw lose I’m struggling to think of more pointless/unlikely thing to happen than wasting a load of money suing people on an Internet forum.

 

And I thought our fanbase couldn't get more fractious. Now we are threatening legal action against each other?

Are any of the other moderators (preferably one I've heard of) able to offer an explanation? I take it he ran this past you all before sending threatening messages to members of the forum?

I just don’t understand how an unofficial supporters group can threaten a website with legal action. Names weren’t named and things were stated as opinion, not fact.

I’m really shocked that the forum have acted how they have - even if I do understand the desire to avoid confrontation.

This is quite problematic.

 

I’m just pleased to have escaped legal threats despite my being unquestionably one of the biggest d1ckheads on the forum.

Maybe. I’d suggest he’s probably not the best person to hold that role however given that he doesn’t even know the difference between libel and slander and is unable to correctly recognise either.

So for future forum learnings can we understand what is libel against 1881? Surely this will help us all not upset the 1881 corporate machine in future?

Well that's bloody stupid. Not only are the official fans forums being reigned in/controlled, now the unofficial ones are being silenced too. Wonderful.

I don't know anything about the legal world but how does a loosely connected fans group take legal action? Would they represent themselves as the 1881? Would the club be happy with a fans group representing themselves in what could be said the clubs name?

 

I thought it would take some doing to to rise above FTRE as the most odious fan group connected with the club, but fair play 1881, they’ve stepped right up and delivered an absolutely masterful display of knobheadedness.

 

Imagine legal eagles quoting it in the future. “In the precedent set by 1881 verses (checks notes) Burnsy and John Barnes”. Assistant whispers. “Apologies it’s Burnsy and “JB” your Honour”. And it was from 2022 to clear up any confusion about the plaintiff.

 

I got a PM and burst out laughing at it.

Is it slanderous to say that the 1881 are a bunch of jumped up g1mps who massively over-estimate their contribution and importance to our fanbase and contain a large amount of unsavoury characters who have repeatedly tried to bully and intimidate those who don't worship at their Adidas Samba adorned feet?

If so, could a mod delete this post ASAP as I don't want to be funding next season's big Costco shop for the bunker.

Lol, we deserve this for allowing such irrelevant people to feel so important.

That play-off final against Palace was embarrassing for sure but I'd much rather be the quiet classy Watford of the past rather than humoring these self-indulged, Stone Island wearing wanna be thugs who don't even improve the atmosphere that much. I hate the whole culture around it.

FYI I do think Nisman abuse is harsh, assuming he's the one who bought the forum off old Admin AP with his own money and also assuming he spends some of his own money running it, he's just taken a precaution here no? Probably a tad dramatic and reactionary in deleting a whole thread but him casually laughing off a legal threat, despite its weak grounds might not have been wise.

 

This is exactly my issue. It literally has no basis to begin with.

 

Agreed. I’ve tried to be as respectful as I can about it. And I certainly respect the fact the forum isn’t a money making machine and won’t/can’t fight legal battles.

But I do feel it should stand up to the most basic of threats that in reality wouldn’t even get anywhere near a court of law - no lawyer worth his salt takes on these baseless claims of slander/libel. They just aren’t true and the forum should recognise that.

Feels like someone from this group has messaged under a pseudonym and waved big words about - and they’ve been upheld with little rebuttal or argument.

This is a bit of a watershed moment for the forum. Are they not going to allow peoples opinion if it upsets those in and around the club?

Why hasn’t this forum stuck up for its members freedom of speech in the first instance given the extremely loose nature of the threat that really isn’t in any way all applicable in law?

One of the four conditions that must be satisfied for a libel case to proceed is that it is shown that the statement 'lowers' the plaintiff in the estimation of right-thinking members of the public. Given that that is no longer possible for the 1881, I would venture that the condition would fail to be satisfied.
