I admire your optimism HB, I really do, but we lost to Norwich at home 0-3. For that alone we deserve to go down in last place.

I think there is more of chance of Gino and Dux dancing the can-can on the centre circle after the Leicester home game. But, any hope we have, is hope, even if it's blind.

Felt that I had to like the post from the one person left who feels we have a chance of getting out of this!

I'm a firm believer in the peculiarities of football. It throws up unbelievable things on a regular basis. Can we beat Burnley at home? Absolutely. Will that give the players a little bit of belief? Probably. We then go to Palace. They've got nothing to play for apart from pride and a little bit of spice between Watford a Zaha. Maybe he doesn't play and is out injured! Watford could go there and pinch an unlikely win, just as they did at Villa and Southampton. If those two things happen, then suddenly it all changes. People will suddenly sit up and think "hang on a minute, we could be on to something here". Players gain belief that the miracle is on.....then we go into the Everton game with all to play for.....etc.

You can see, a win changes everything and can become self-perpetuating in a positive way. Why not think this way? Doesn't do any harm.

On Betfair you can put £10 on us staying up and will win £500 if we do. Almost tempted.

I just went and threw £10 into the sea. There’s more chance of £500 washing up on the beach as a result.

    Six.

Six times we have won all season, and never followed it up it a win or a decent performance. What you are suggesting is we can suddenly turn into prime Barcelona and win three in a row, something this team hasn't managed since last season. Even if, and that's a big IF, we somehow break our home hoodoo and beat Burnley, all it does is stay our execution for another week. Our players are weak minded and crumble so easily. Had we managed a few wins back to back this season then yes, maybe a chance somehow. With this squad, no chance.

I truly believed we could stay up, but having lost two of our very winnable games against Leeds and Brentford in the last few weeks my belief is hanging by a thread.

Having said that we could still do it if the stars align in our favour and someone shoots that bloody Witch Doctor.....

    Never change TVOR.

Overlooking years of systemic decline due to catastrophic decision making, to place blame on voodoo for our relegation.

    Never. Change.

Absolutely lovin the Sky Sports analysis of who will go down out of Leeds, Everton and Burnley. General consensus is that Leeds are in the biggest trouble as they have played Watford twice. On the other hand Everton and Burnley have got easier run-ins including Watford.

If our relegation is confirmed sooner rather than later, it will mean possibly two ‘dead rubbers’ to go to at Vicarage Road and I was wondering how I would feel about that. Would they seem like pre-season friendlies with nothing to play for? (Obviously the schadenfreude aspect of the Everton game would be different.)
In fact, these sort of games have happened very rarely over the years. Watford were relegated on the last day in 1975, 1996 and 2020, so that just leaves one game in 1988 v Derby, two in 2000 v Man U and Coventry and one in 2007 v Newcastle with nothing on them. (I do also remember the disastrous 1972 relegation but I was only going to the odd game then.) Does anyone remember how they felt attending those games?

I remember the Coventry one primarily because ‘Shorty’ did some raffle thing at half time with a bunch of little kids. One of the prizes was a day out at a Division 1/Championship game the next season. He described the prize with such enthusiasm that the Coventry fans cheered and fell about laughing at someone being so happy about relegation.

    As did I. Horrific.

I was thinking I was sure there were more games than that after our relegations were confirmed, but then realized you were referring to just home games. But although it doesn't directly answer your question, I went to one game after we were relegated in 2007, having not been since Everton at home (I did watch the FA Cup games vs Plymouth and Man Utd) - Reading away where we grabbed a surprise 2-0 win, which resulted in them missing out on European qualification by one point. I went there because it was a new ground and I'd recently passed my driving test so driving there was good practice. Quite an enjoyable game because of the absence of any pressure, a very rare win on the road and the fact it was Reading we beat, denting their qualification hopes in the process (didn't like them at the time as we hardly ever beat them and their fans seemed a bit up themselves and were pretty condescending about us after their 0-0 at our place, seeming to think they should have cruised to victory there).

It's still not confirmed which means it's still possible we stay up.

One thing's for certain, the players haven't given up, so I'm not giving up!
