Whenever he ends up at FC Twente or NEC Breda or whatever average Dutch team, I guarantee you he'll play 25 league games minimum all of a sudden.
Yeah, I'd be interested to see the numbers behind it, as it's clearly a blankey strategy. Having a look at some sales from Udinese that may slightly justify this method: Danilo sold to Bologna at 35 for £400k Hallfredsson sold to Frosinone at 34 for £450k Thereau sold to Fiorentina at 34 for £2.9m Felipe sold to SPAL at 32 for £540k Those are since 2017. There's plenty others of a similar age who ended up getting released or leaving on a free transfer. I wonder if the above fees break even compared to the wages shelled out to the OAPs.
I must admit, Janmaat's contract extension had entirely passed me by. Giving someone with his history of injuries a two-year deal seems excessively generous but I wonder if there were some clauses built in to help reduce his financial liability towards the club in return for that security? I.e. His basic salary was reduced but topped up to something around what he was on originally if he met certain clauses. Or even a relegation wage reduction % given our predicament at the time of his renewal. It's a very good point about despising losing players for nothing or paying them off, though. You can't tell me Peñaranda or Sinclair's development is suddenly going to be aided by a loan spell in Bulgaria. They'd get far greater benefit from a spell in League One where – particularly in Peñaranda's case – they'd actually be tested in English football. This is just them seeing out their contracts before their inevitable release. Surely it would be better for all parties to pay them up, even up to 90% of their salaries – and I include Janmaat in this – to get them off the wage bill. The player gets almost all the money they were guaranteed and the chance to earn a new salary alongside that pay-off. Seems like a pretty sweet deal if you are confident of finding a new club and saves the club some cash too.
I don't think Janmaat is confident about finding a new club though, certainly not in the Premier League, and in these austere times, probably not back home in the Netherlands neither
Prodl is yet to play for Udinese lol, apparently played 3 games for us last season including one in the league, but I have no recollection of him being on the pitch even though I went to the Sheffield United game!
He’s pretty highly regarded in his homeland and I bet PSV or Feyenoord would pick him up were he a free agent. PSV just signed Gotze so I don’t think they are short of money, even in these times.
Would be very upset with this - if he’d stayed fit long enough for it to be something worth worrying about. Was a bit iffy at times defensively but was always fairly sound when he played and was worth what we paid for him. Interesting to hear him saying he’s fit and ready to play... His contract extension last season is obviously ridiculous decision making once more from the club in that regard. They just have no direction or sense when it comes to that type of thing. You’ve got to expect we have players coming in this week - Ivic has said he wants a big squad more than once and yet, to date, he has less numbers than he started with. Obviously this means Femenia is staying you’d think. Still wouldn’t be surprised to see Mariappa arrive back at the club if Dawson leaves as well as Mapps can cover both positions in an emergency.
Was actually a good player but good riddance, just further evidence of our horrific defensive recruitment when in the Prem. Another defender with multiple Premier relegations on his CV now gone. I would love to see some figures on his time here: - Cost per minute played - Time spent fit vs injured (days, possible games played etc) I don't totally blame him. Something was clearly wrong with our medical team for the majority of his time here. Still like I said on an earlier post, I guarantee you he will go play a full season for PSV or one of them now.

Sorry to see him go. Enjoyed having him play for us and he was very capable of a goal or two. But obviously we cannot afford to go forwards with players who are so injury prone, and this news does make sense for all parties. I don’t know if we’ve paid him to leave, if he’s paid us, or if we’ve simply gone Dutch?
My memories of Janmaat: scored a couple of mental goals and was injured a lot. Always come across as a decent bloke and I wish him well.
Was pretty good when he played for us, but that was all too rare of late (when did he last play for us? Genuinely can't remember). Even healthy players have suffered terrible injury problems with us, let alone Janmaat who was always a bit of a sicknote, and that contract was just madness. I would imagine this time we are paying him off to an extent, I can't see us letting him go without paying up some part of his contract
God, we've paid him off haven't we? I'm sure we haven't paid him the whole pointless two year extension but the wording there very much suggests we've been negotiating to get him off the books.
Sorry to see Janmaat go, but his injury record was horrendous. I was hoping he would get over his issues and play a part this season, but it was not to be.
He says he has completed his recovery and is fit, so I guess it is time to get him off the books before he trips over his laces and gets injured again It's real shame he has been so injury prone because he is actually a good player, lets hope for his sake he now manages to stay injury free, which would be typical of our luck, now we've let him go. Having said that I would not begrudge him that as he played well for us whenever his fitness allowed him to, however whatever he does in the future I wish him well, but a parting of the ways at this time is probably the best decision for WFC.
Crazy. 76 league appearances. Total of 5566 minutes which works out an average of 73 mins per game. 5 goals and 5 assists.
Despite being our record signing as a defender and probably the best player we had at the back, he only started 40% of all the league games he was here for. Shame as he really did score quality goals. Having said that, his injuries mean he was yet another one of the weak mentality squad that got us relegated so best he leaves too. https://twitter.com/WatfordFC/status/1297458808692736000?s=20
I think he was a good player, but not great (often think I overrated him during his long spells out and we were stuck with Kiko starting). It’s hard not to dwell on the club renewing his contract last season, only to have to pay him off 8 months and 0 appearances later because he’s never fit. Baffling decision making.
People remember the good games he played. Once a season, he looked absolutely world class, such as Chelsea the other year. He put in some absolute dross as well. Mildly better than Kiko, I will give him that but to be available for less than 50% of games whilst under contract shows what a poor signing he turned out to be. Good to see him paid up and off the wage bill, I really hope the new contract had a fitness clause and this did not cost us too much.
I like Janmat , thought he was a good player with plenty of skill , unfortunately also very injury prone. today is obviously clearance day
I agree with you. He did have some games where he looked class, especially going forward, but there were a lot of crap performances too and weak defending. There's often a tendency to build up players in our imaginations when they haven't played for a while, especially when their replacements are utter dross. We're seeing it now with people expecting Deeney and Gray to light up our lacklustre attack, even though they are both proven to be utter crap beyond all doubt.
Shame he had to go but these things happen. His classy message is no surprise. Good luck to him in the future.
