From the little I have gathered about professional football coaching over the years, the key with goalkeepers is consistency and communication. Someone like Reids with his setpiece knowledge may know way more about this but coaches and particularly defenders want a goalkeeper who will do the same thing in similar circumstances. What they don't like is a keeper who comes eight yards off his line for one cross, but leaves the next one. By shouting 'away' he may be giving his defenders clear instruction that he's not coming for it. On its own in isolation this is the sort of kernel of evidence that's probably not all that useful in analysing his strengths and weaknesses. I think Bachmann is a good goalkeeper but it's likely that the interest from Arsenal and Ajax is probably more a more accurate indication of that.
The Championship is a much weaker league so few were able to take advantage, but in any case, Sierralta got his head on everything last season anyway, so I'm not absolutely terrified of Bachmann at corners
Yes, think they offered £2million, think he ended up much further down the footballing pyramid a few years later
One of the best things about watching the lockdown games was realising that there is no difference in defensive communication between the professional game and Sunday league - both just use combinations of shouting "time!", "away!" and "out!".
I think he is an alright keeper and am in no hurry for him to go anywhere else, but £15m? That would be crazy money to turn down
Only if we had a suitable replacement lined up. Foster in 38 now and has question marks over his interest IMO. Seems just as, if not more, bothered with his off-field ventures. So we could be risking a key position in the team just as we re-enter the PL just to pocket £15m. I’d only be comfortable with this deal if we could replace him with someone like Johnstone at little cost to us.
I think it would be foolish to sell a keeper who is developing well and is relatively young and is part of the glue that holds the side together. His value can only increase with the workload he will face in the PL and I think he can cope. The Austrian national set up seem to think so and I trust their judgement. What is maddening is that we have four keepers plus Parkes now out on loan and Angelini will be making an impact too. Why we re-signed Elliot beats me and Foster is over the hills and far away. Daniel and Pontus should be contending for that number one spot and when Angelini is ready you could make way for him.
I think the goalkeeper strategy (as long as Bachmann stays) is fine, Bachmann #1, Foster #2 and Elliot #3, with Dahlberg out on loan. Dahlberg is young and has only ever played in Sweden, he needs games at a higher level (the Championship would be a decent step up) so that he can come back and hopefully challenge Bachmann, rather than rot on the bench like he did when he was here before (and of course when he was in the Netherlands). Angelini is reeeeeally young, no idea when, or if, he'll ever be ready
Bachmann's agency is Triple S Sports, their clients regularly have ******** transfer rumours and unnecessary hype (James Garner) written about them by Charlie Wyett and his colleagues at The Sun. These latest Arsenal and West Ham developments are codswallop. Bachmann doesn't deserve a new deal unless he proves himself in the Prem first. Sell.
I don't fully agree with all your comment. Any 'Park' keeper shouting 'away' with the ball within the middle of the 6 yd box would be getting an earful from his defenders. Bachmann doesn't want to come for it. You would need to ask him why this has been the way throughout his career. I accept he communicates well, but shouting loudly will not stop a Premier league player from hammering home a free header/volley/shot from 3 or 4 yds from our goal with Bachmann rooted to his line. There are many on this thread that feel he should be sold,, so he doesn't appear to have everyone feeling confident. We shall see what happens in the coming months. The club should sell while the sun shines for Bachmann.
I wonder whether Bachmann yells in standard German or the Austro-Bavarian dialect? Or maybe even Serbo-Croat?
