With Bairstow, Brook and probably Root to come back in we have a very strong looking batting line up. Salt and Vince to drop out and probably Jacks?

Lots of useful contributions with bat and ball.

Yes was just watching the updates on the BBC website. Amazing hitting. Must have been a great batting surface. Looks like the second over of the innings went for 29 runs ?

Yes it was I think but still got to get the runs and be bold in your approach.

Johnson Charles got 118 off 46 for example but De Kock had SA 150/0 off 10 and they kind of went on from there.

    Nine wickets v Kent!

Mr IBB is NOT impressed especially as I have accused Woy of placing a curse on David Moyes.

Eddie Plumley was also a keen cricketer:

He did indeed. There was an annual cricket match in which he and several of the team played. Not sure if it was against Watford Town CC or West Herts.

I think so. There are plenty of pictures in the WO archives of the players and Graham in their whites. GT adored cricket, playing charity games with the Taverners and even followed England on tour.

V excited about the ashes .

Shame about Archer of course but hopefully Wood can get through 2-3 games and a default frontline of Broad Anderson and Robinson looks tasty in English conditions .

Woakes has got the best record in English conditions of any current English bowlers ( yes even Anderson) so I think we are looking healthy in attack with Wood to come in for 2-3 tests probably for Anderson.

Batting order looks exciting too with two possible weaknesses in Pope and Crawley.

Stokes and Baz seem dead set on standing by Crawley and I guess he is still only 24 so I’m going to bow to their (slightly) superior cricket knowledge on this and get behind Zak.

I think there is too much fear about Australia. They have a great attack in all bowling condition and a high calibre spinner but their batting looks weak in English’s conditions .

Smith and Labuschagne are quality in English conditions and will prob average 50 plus.

Warner averages about 17 in England , Peter Handcream similar stats. Khawaja is another who looks good in flat Australian wickets and can play spin well but has failed in Wnglish conditions . And their new wonder kid Carey is untested in English conditions , not sure whether he’s got the technique to deal with a seaming ball.

We need to pray for a damp English summer and save our sun bathing for a winter break in Benidorm .

Hopefully all our bowlers can keep fit - is it worth risking them against Ireland?

Agree on Crawley - somehow he keeps getting picked!

Apparently Pope has been made a vice captain.

Aussies not won in England since 2001...

They will be facing a very different England to the last Ashes of course.

Another thunk I missed is if we keep playing in this style how many games will go beyond 3.5 days which may nullify the need for a frontline spinner?

Would they go with 4 pace bowlers and replace spinner with another batsman and rely on Root as a spinner ?

Woakes to come in for Leach ? Woakes averages 30 with the bat.

As much as I think Bairstow should play I do feel dropping Foakes is a mistake. He's a far better keeper and very decent batsmen as well. Interesting to see how long the Crawley experiment goes on if he continues in his current form. In fairness there doesn't seem to be too many options to replace him and it definitely should not be Bairstow
Can Anderson play all five tests? Robinson staying fit will be key as well but I do worry about the batting

The fitness of Anderson, Broad, Robinson and Wood will be key. If we have 2 or 3 unavailable for a test, without Archer too, we will struggle.
As always much will depend on Stokes, Root, and Bairstow at the crease, and the first couple of days of the first ashes test will set the tone, esp if we want to retain this air of all-conquering, positive, Bazball.

Quite an ending to the IPL.

10 needed off the last 2 balls need then Jadeja hits a 6 and 4 so CSK won!
