    Urgent update from CNN

38% of Americans wouldn't buy Corona beer "under any circumstances" because of the coronavirus, according to a recent survey.

Just to be abundantly clear: There is no link between the virus and the beer.

Looks like the first person to be infected in the UK is from my way. Just to keep things in perspective, it was nice virtually knowing you....

Well, thanks for infecting the rest of us. The least you could have done is stay away from fellow Watford fans...

Well to minimise any further risk, I have decided to self-isolate for at least two weeks. Yes, it is true that I live 15 minutes away from the affected town and, yes, it is true I have no symptoms. But you can never be too careful. So I shall step away from my life as the mother of two teenagers and instead hunker down with simple essentials - Netflix, chocolate, gin. The sacrifices we make..

Your sacrifice will be remembered. The post-coronavirus survivors will no doubt name a community notice board or parish council meeting room after you.

The right decision. Remember when you open your door in 2 weeks time that we will have all gone and it will be down to you to rebuild society. With that in mind I would suggest some time should be spent on internet research and best to get yourself pregnant again in the next few days while there are still some men available. Good luck. The human race is relying on you.

Survival of the human race is not a good enough reason to go through pregnancy, babies and - especially - teenagers again, I’m afraid. If it helps, though, I will at least look pregnant after two weeks of Netflix, chocolate & gin.

13 new cases in the UK including two teachers from different schools (germ factories at the best of times) that are now closed. Is the lid now off and the number of cases will rise exponentially, or is it all a bit of a media-fulled overreaction?

    I think the latter.

It’s hard to say at this point, but the potential is there for a very serious outbreak. If the virus is spread widely (and there is no vaccine at present time, though scientists in Israel say they are close) then everyone’s elderly parents or Grandparents, babies and people with serious long term conditions are at risk. It’s true that influenza poses something of a similar risk most years, but that’s why we vaccinate most at risk.

Moreover, it appears to spread easily and quickly, meaning that our health service, prone to trolley deaths already, won’t cope. In a pandemic this is exacerbated because medical staff will also get it, so absenteeism could be very large. If say 3-5% of the population became infected at one time, much would grind to a halt, due to the numbers in isolation/looking after the 5% and the fear of contact.

The strategy is to contain the virus as much as possible, so people get it over as long a timeframe as possible. That would be bad in itself, but would keep the wheels running until there is a vaccine.

I suspect the majority of the population will end up getting it. The elderly, esp those with respiratory issues will be at serious risk.

Exactly this. The sheer numbers of those who potentially could get this and need treating are such that our system will not be able to cope - that is why containment is a priority.

Over here in one of the UK “hotpots”, meanwhile, all the schools are open but one pub has closed and I know there are a number of families - and two GPs - who are “self isolating” after coming into contact with the original patient. And good to see that the Daily Fail has remained true to form in its reporting and managed to reference both Waitrose (people allegedly wearing masks in there - err, no they’re not) and house prices in the area!

Before and after outbreak pictures released by NASA. These pictures show pollution levels.

China has shut down so many factories to try and combat the spread of the virus that it's visible from space.

Will get worse before it gets better to the point where I did a food & household shop this weekend for supplies of everything for a good few months.

For a good few weeks now I will only go out when is absolutely necessary. Definitely no public transport/Airports etc. Maybe totally overkill but I'm not taking any risks from here, given the rate of Worldwide/European spread.

I'm going to self isolate more than @Relegation Certs in his mums basement for the last 50 years.

You might mock but it's over here & confirmed in Hertfordshire now, so now is the time to start protecting as far as possible. IMO.

While there is certainly no need to panic, there's no need to take unnecessary risks either.

No I'm not, but I wont take any % chances with my health. You never really can anticipate how your body will react if you catch it, no one does.

Next couple of weeks in the UK will be critical & it will spike further from here. Don't see any reason to take a chance if you really don't have to.

Had a text message from my doctors surgery today telling our family not to got there if we feel any flu like symptoms & to go straight to A&E. Does not fill me with confidence that there is sufficient planning & I feel extremely sorry for already overrun A&E departments.

If they’ve said that they’re stupid, as it’s contrary to government advice. Going to a hospital, especially A&E, will just spread the virus to others.

Agreed. I’m sure I read that one of the reasons the virus spread so rapidly in Italy was because one of the original patients was first of all sent home a couple of times by his doctor and then told to go to hospital, where he was directed to a normal waiting area before someone finally whisked him away - by which point he’d already infected loads of people.
@Hornet4ever I’m sure the official advice is supposed to be, if you start to experience symptoms you suspect may be COVID-19, you definitely do not go to A&E but sit tight and call 111. Also, while I do understand your concerns, it may reassure you to know that, for under 60s, the mortality rate is less than 1%.

Still, you are more likely to die than Watford were to win 3-0 against Liverpool?

    1% is a lot

  33. Arakel

    Arakel First Team

A bit of a quibble on this point: the real mortality rate is actually not known yet. All we have at the moment are estimates, and those might be way off base (for good or for ill).

A number of medical journals have been warning about that this week (example: Swiss Medical Weekly).

Also worth bearing in mind that while YOU might be less at risk as an under 60, you'll be helping to spread it to other people too, so taking steps to reduce your chances of becoming a carrier has a wider upshot for the rest of the community (and perhaps more importantly, your own family). :)
