Not disagreeing strongly with your overall point but you’re vastly overrating Pollock and Vata.

Vata done literally nothing of substance for the last three months, even if he will become good one day he’s not right now.

Coventry and Middlesbrough have vastly better squads and out of our good players you mentioned, we only had one since January in Selvik and Baah being fit is literally the difference between play-offs and 14th IMO.

Although it does seem Pozzo expected a top 6 position or certainly to be closer to it ?

That’s why I read the Daily Star for my news, their short snappy headlines always do a great job of distilling the actual story for me without reading the whole article.

Of course it is. That’s why it doesn’t make a blind bit of difference whether the manager is Cleverley, Pep or Jonny No-Mark from Ecuador.

I will say Clevs was at least spared the corner flag treatment.

People seem to be forgetting we were relegation favs, before the start of last season. We finished mid table, with one of the worst squads in the Championship. Clevs completed his objective, he kept us in the Championship.

Yet we readily describe Louza and Chak as two of the best players in the Champo. Statistically, since January, we’ve had one of the best keepers. I’d argue that every single team that finished below us, with maybe the exception of QPR had a worse squad on paper.

To describe our squad as ‘one of the worst’ is nonsense. We had a mid table squad. It was more the lack of faith in the owners and coach that led to a belief that relegation could happen.

I think the point most people seem to be missing is players like Giorgi, Louza, Pollock and Baah were not expected to be our best players this year. How many of us would have predicted that they'd be our 4 best players this season at the end of last season? I didn't even think Baah or Louza would be at the club by the end of the summer window.

We all thought our squad was devoid of any quality and it's to TC's credit that they've all hugely improved to become our best players this year. It's revisionism IMO to say otherwise. I also think people are missing the point that the culture within the squad was pretty rotten and I think without someone like TC we'd have spiraled into a horrible relegation battle, with players who weren't up for it.

i am surprised to hear Watford fans were not banking on Chakvetadze being a key player for them after he had a standout Euros tournament in the summer?

He'd never really shown any consistency with us had he? I think we all knew he was a good player, but he'd hardly proved to be a game changer last season. I remember when Belkalem looked like Maldini in the World Cup and that didn't work out for us...

that is interesting. i have not seen much of Watford Fc in the EFL but i did see that tournament so i was just surprised to read that was the opinion of the majority of the fans as you did write. with the Watford Fc squad i would have seen as a key player for me

Yeah it's a fair point, I think it was clear he had a lot of promise but before Cleverley took over he was coming on as a sub mainly and I think quite a lot of people were a bit baffled when we made his signing permanent in January last year.

Selvik, Abankwah, Kebben, Louza, are quality, Vata and Chaks have got potential, they have very little end product, the rest would struggle to get into our Sunday League side, absolute garbage

Watford Supporters Trust have had their say.

In the wake of the club's decision to sack Tom Cleverley on Tuesday, the Watford Supporters' Trust have issued a statement.

Their statement, in full, is as follows:

"The Watford Supporters Trust would like to express its sincere thanks to Tom Cleverley for his service to Watford FC.

"Across nearly a decade, as a loanee, player, captain, youth coach and manager, Tom has given his all to deliver successful results, develop players, and bring together supporters.

"We are grateful for his love of and loyalty to our club and wish him the best of success in the future. He is always welcome at Watford.

"In January 2025, Gino Pozzo stated that Tom is 'a bright young coach who we could work together with to deliver success to the club'.

"He pledged that 'we are committed to support him and look forward to the challenges ahead together'.

"Only 101 days later, Gino has chosen to sack him and will now hire the club’s 21st manager in just over a decade.

"We are frustrated and disappointed, but sadly not surprised. It is another spin on a merry-go-round which has not been successful since the FA Cup Final in 2019. We again ask when it will stop.

"The January transfer window raised serious questions about a disconnect between Tom’s stated wish-list of experienced Championship players to maintain a play-off push and the recruitment by Gino and Gianluca Nani of primarily young players with no Championship experience.

"There were rumours about whether Tom faced imminent sacking, followed by mixed messages from the club.

"We fully appreciate that the results since January have been poor, but feel it is hard to untangle this from questions about squad quality and depth, financial constraints, and uncertainty over organisational structure, governance and decision-making authority at Watford.

"Some of these issues have affected the club for years and remain unresolved.

"The Trust has repeatedly expressed its dissatisfaction with the lack of a clear, effective, long-term strategy at Watford.

"At the fans forum in summer 2023, Gino showed no inclination to change his approach – and indeed he has not.

"This latest decision adds to our concerns about the club’s relationship with supporters, potential for on-pitch success, and future stability and financial health now that Premier League parachute payments have ended.

"He must take responsibility for the club’s current situation.

"Gino’s message of May 7, 2025, goes some way to recognise his responsibility, and while this is welcomed, we do not believe it will assuage fans’ concerns.

"He acknowledges that inexperienced players in the squad need time to develop, yet does not acknowledge that Tom Cleverley was similarly inexperienced and could have been given time to learn and develop, most importantly through an additional transfer window to get the balance of the squad right.

"The next managerial appointment is vitally important.

"The incoming manager must deliver results in the Championship, develop this young squad, continue the academy’s recent progress, connect with fans, and unite all within and around the club.

"In turn, Gino Pozzo, Scott Duxbury, Gianluca Nani and the Board must provide the resources, support and patience to enable success.

"If indeed Gino is looking for new investment or even to sell the club, this is best done with a stable, united club, working toward common goals, driven by a clear plan for the future.

"Without the above, the club is at increased risk of further struggles in the Championship, falling revenues from the growing number of empty seats in the ground, and a fanbase which is increasingly disconnected from the club we love.

"The struggles of other clubs in the Championship and lower leagues when supporters are not included and kept on-side with effective, transparent engagement are a lesson to Watford."

What we want the club to do

"As a first step, we call on Gino Pozzo and the club’s Directors to meet with supporters over the next eight weeks to explain how his immediate aims can be delivered through his strategy, articulate how he will address the above concerns, and answer questions about how he will ensure the well-being of the club for future generations, after his time as custodian is done."

    What we will do

"We will communicate the above to the club and will report back to supporters. In addition, we will continue to gather input from supporters, to ensure our collective perspective is conveyed to the club clearly and strongly."

Blah blah blah blah blah. In the age of social media and snappy comms, there's this bunch of old geezers writing like it's 1995.

But also, what a ridiculous list of things the new 'manager' is supposed to deliver:
    • results in the Championship
    • develop this young squad
    • continue the academy’s recent progress
    • connect with fans
    • unite all within and around the club
    • nuclear fusion
    • world peace
Pozzo only appoints head coaches. The job role is to train the team, pick (most of) the players for a match and take what they're given when it comes to transfers in/out.

The most ridiculous thing the new head coach is supposed to deliver is what Gino Pozzo demands:
    • "...to challenge for the play-off places next season and, hopefully, promotion"

We had Sarr, Pedro and Louza in midfield a few years ago and didn't get close to the playoffs. Going to be interesting how he expects a midfield of Sissoko, Kayembe, Ince and TDB to do any better. This man is delusional.
