Pretty sure we won this as a Premier League side as well. Consistency is not a thing you really tie with Watford FC but we have consistently the best grounds man in England.
We also had a good investment and refurbishment once we'd got shot of the egg chasing peanut huggers. I think our pitch is still a lot newer than many.
I remember during the Covid season we were playing on an absolute carpet at home, yet struggling when the away pitches were not quite perfect (certainly no ploughed fields though!), our groundstaff deserve a lot of plaudits for that promotion!
I think it was more akin to a quagmire back then. Not as bad as say, Sheff Wednesday's ground, but you could really see the impact especially on wet evening games. I remember when we played Burnley at home in a re-arranged fixture. It was dreadful, we conceded in the first minute and lost the game 1-0. I trudged home in the rain and to top off a terrible evening I lost my favorite umbrella.
Remember that game. Awful weather pitch and game. Lashing down with rain when I left and had to pinch an umbrella to avoid getting soaked.
I’m surprised that they don’t keep one of the many pitches at LC in a “not perfect” state for the odd occasion that they’ll come up against it. Appreciate it’s more likely to cause injuries but it’s only a handful of times a season these days.
