One thing you can say about Ranieri is we had that short spell where we looked excellent and it seemed like everything would be ok. Unfortunately he then reverted to type as far as his recent prior record was concerned.

There were a couple of games where we looked absolutely superb (Everton & MU ?) but the rest were terrible, and later reports that he had barely any contact at all with the players, not even attending training, made you wonder how the hell he had ever had any success in his managerial career !! Just seemed to reply on being a jovial guy in front of the cameras. Maybe he was just way past his sell-by date.

His fifth game in charge, at home to Man Utd, is one of the best Watford performances I've ever seen. We went out with a really high press and broke with venom every time we won the ball. We never managed to repeat that.

Best as a coach? Probably Silva - not that I care for him particularly.
Best as a person? Zola, Javi, QSF (even though the football wasn't as attractive as he was). Xisco was just so enthusiastic about everything that you can't help but love him, even if he wasn't the 'finished article'.

Worst as a coach? Probably QSF 2.0 - should never have happened. Hodgson too.
Worst as a person? Silva or Hodgson. Worst I've felt as a Watford fan in a long time under the latter. The full-time scenes at Crystal Palace away should have got him sacked on the spot.

I know he masterminded a relegation with them and put the wheels in motion for a second, but I can't help but feel I'd like to have seen Rob Edwards given more time. Just a little.

I’d go Zola best under Pozzo. What a fun time that was.
I’d go Hodgson worst in my lifetime. At least Mike Keen gave us 2-0 with nine men game.

Good god yes that brings back a painful memory. Celebrating with the Palarse fans' after relegating his current side (which, lets be honest he couldn't give to buggers about). Still it was very disrespectful and showed what a bias bloke he was towards one club. Also very hard to get on board with. Just an old git who loved to moan.

Not a great communicator? The man that uttered the phrase "Football is not for pussies, it's a job for real men". Best thing a Watford manager has ever said, would have been useful if he'd conveyed that to our squads over the last few years!

If the Pozzos had been in charge with GT the first time around he would've been let go after finishing 18th in Division 2 in 1980. The statement would have said they were looking for someone with more experience in the top two divisions.

As for the question Best- Joka. Worst- Roy.

The best football was probably under Silva.
The most fun was Joka and Zola.
Hodgson the worst by a mile.

Wilder called a group of the players out within a fortnight of working with them and was proved to be absolutely right.

He was right then but it really has become a game for pussies now. More interested in fashion statements like holes in socks rather than playing to win in an aggressive way.

I guess it depends on what you consider ‘the best’- the style of football, the personality, the results etc.

The best for me is probably Gracia. Although he had the best squad at his disposal, he got us to a cup final and very close to European football. He was very likeable and the atmosphere around the place just seemed very natural. Zola’s football was outstanding sometimes and Marco Silva looked like he was building something but both tailed off in the end.

Worst is Hodgson and it’s not even close. Someone who very obviously did not like Watford and didn’t even try and hide it. He could not have cared less and his antics on the final day tells you all you need to know. I hated him from his days as England manager and hated him even more when he was appointed with us. He can **** off

Hodgson also did the same thing as Wilder, said pretty much the same thing word for word, long before Wilder said it:

“Perhaps I’m left to reflect that some of the players suggested to me as the ones who would resolve the club’s parlous situation weren’t, in fact, able to produce the performances that they’d been billed as being capable of.”

Hodgson was a dithering old fool but a lot of what he said was accurate I agree.

I'd say Chelsea at home a couple of games later (at least close to it) - we really deserved to win, never mind draw that game.

However, the Brentford away game shortly after really set the tone for the rest of the season, both under Ranieri and Hodgson, and we just got more shambolic and less creative. I'm pretty sure GoingDown said last season Val was our worst Pozzo manager, but while I can understand people considering him as one of the worst, I can't see how he can be bottom of the pile after Hodgson or even Wilder - yes, the start and finish were awful, the nadir being losing at home to Huddersfield towards the end of his time (even if it's something we've made a habit of over various eras), but we did have quite an exciting purple patch with a really good away run during which some of the team spirit seemed to be back. Even taking into account what he had to work with, there was virtually nothing redeeming about Hodgson's tenure.

You’re right. Because that season, which started quite brightly, got unrelentingly worse and worse I had forgotten about that Chelsea game when we were really good.

I had a quick look over breakfast this morning to see where all our former Pozzo managers are now. Apologies if I’ve got anything wrong..

Wilder, Silva and Ismael are still managing here in England, with Wilder two matches away from promotion to the PL.

Ranieri is currently 5th in Serie A with Roma. Ivic I think is in the UAE, Oscar Garcia in Mexico, Sannino is managing in the Swiss League and Billy M is number two to Moyes at Everton. Mullins is at Fulham, coaching their under 21s.

I believe (but please correct me if I’m wrong) all these ex managers of ours are out of work now…Edwards (following his relegation season), Bilic, Munoz, Pearson, QSF, Gracia, Slav, Mazzari and Zola.

Hodgson has retired, just as he had before we bizarrely appointed him.

    None have passed away.

Best - Silva before he got his head turned, looking back on what we now know about Gino and co I dont blame him for it.

Worst by a country mile - Hodgson.

For me a good manager gets the best out of a team so needs to be tempered with the quality of squad they were given. It means that a Good manager can get mediocre performances out of a **** squad and a crap manager gets mediocre performances out of a good squad. Although important you need to look past results.

    That being said:

    Best Joka or Nigel P.

    Worst Owl or QSF 2.0.

Tbf, Pearson was both able and willing to play Sarr and Deulofeu together who were electric for a short period until Geri got injured, so I don’t know if he got more out of the squad than he should have

My favourite was Zola, the football was like a gourmet meal in a fancy restaurant after having been served courses of thin gruel for years prior, the best is between Joka and Gracia. Worst is obviously Hodgson

Didn’t mind Dyche at the time, he did well with limited tools, but in the end I’m glad he went as it doesn’t bare thinking about what he’d have done with our sexy Zola-era players

Dyche got us our highest finish since we made the playoffs under Boothroyd's final season. I think he did amazingly well to get that much graft out of the limited squad we had. I was sort of sad to see him go as I was excited to see what he could do the following season, then I heard the take over happened...
