Best And Worst Head Coach Since Pozzos

This is going to be very debatable and everyone will have their own personal view, but in your own opinion, who was the best and worst of the Pozzo head coaches regardless of the squads we had?

    For me:

    Best:

    Zola

I almost said Gracia but I cannot deny the football under Zola was mouthwateringly good. Quick, fast passing and really good pressing. Some of the goals and players we had under his reign even then were top draw.

    Worst:

    QSF 2.0

There are a lot of candidates for this one, but bringing back this idiot was a terrible choice. Yes we had the 45mins against Arsenal and we beat Norwich away, but what else did we do? Played some awful defensive football, got smashed by City and lost away to Southampton in a massive six-pointer. Good first time, bad second.

  2. Jumbolina

    Jumbolina First Team

    Marco Silva best
Worst QSF 2 or Wilder. Thought Ismael was awful as well but didn’t cause much damage relative to QSF.

Silva and Joka the best. I liked Zola but not sure he very tactically astute. Worst was Hodgson by miles

Hodgson showed such disdain for us, it was almost funny, but has to go down as the worst manager in terms of the person.

I think QSF 2.0 was the worst appointment given the context and ultimate outcome, Hodgson was just a bit of a Hail Mary and whoever we appointed probably would’ve had the same outcome, he was just a ****, but QSF 2.0 had disastrous consequences.

    Best: Silva pre Everton approach.

Too close to call for the worst, there has been a few ropey ones.

Zola I think for the charisma, a lot of the football, and the fact that back then everything under Pozzo was new and felt fresh, radical and exciting.

Honourable mentions for Slav and Xisco as they got us promoted, Silva as he was clearly a good coach, Gracia, and I’m even going to say TC up to Dec 27 too.

Worst by a long way would be Hodgson. Charmless and useless, a fatal combination. I wasn’t a fan of Beppe either, or Ranieri, while the Garcia then McKinley business was strange too. I didn’t like Ismael or Ivic much either.

Alonso would most likely be my least favourite should he be appointed.

I'm very surprised by the number of Silvas appearing as the best. We won 1 of his final 11 league games, and given our trend of performances under him, I believe we would have had about a 70% chance of relegation had he stayed. He was every bit as sullen, unlikeable and ultimately ineffective as Hodgson was after Everton came calling.

  15. Vic

Zola gave us some beautiful memories and false dawns
Sannino gave us Italian hoofball and insanity
Oscar Garcia gave us another head coach to add to the stats. We gave him a heart attack.
Billy McKinlay gave us 2 matches. Or was it one? We gave him an unbeaten managerial record, and utter humiliation
Joka gave us 5-0 at Craven Cottage and promotion. A poor sacking, no matter what Duxberry said about contract negotiations and wage demands.
QSF1 gave us solidity and got lucky with the strikers. He binned off peak Vydra, never forget that. I liked him though, first time round.
Mazzari gave us gravitas, tobacco breath, an admirable refusal to speak English, and 2 goalkeepers
Silva gave us some great football and disastrous egoism
Javi Gracia gave us heaven, hell and a swift return to earth
QSF2 gave us less than nothing
Nigel P gave us something different and could have done more. Watford 3 Liverpool 1 (or was it Liverpool 0?) and the hope that killed came hand in hand with mythical stories about wolf killing. A dramatic and disastrous sacking.
Hayden Mullins gave us a night against Man City which was only a drubbing, not a complete gang rape.
Vladimir Ivic gave us joyless wins, draws and a respectable points total.
Xisco gave us a smile, a happy squad, a promotion, and alarming moments thereafter.
Title winning Claudio gave us a new level of disappointment and signs of significant ageing
Roy Hodgson gave up before he arrived. Retired from football management, he joined us as a pisstake.
Rob Edwards gave us a notoriously poor pre season, and an unconvincing start of season. But a strong jaw and hairline. (And a more poetic riposte to Gino’s sacking than anyone could have imagined.)
Slavan Bilic gave us some good wins (including 4-0 against the Bedfordshire bubonics?) and the possibility of more. Undone by injuries, undermined by Gino. A very poor sacking.
Chris Wilder gave us proof, if needed, that the club was broken.
Valerian Ismael gave us the falsest dawn in August, then Rajovic. A contract extension and continued decline.
Tom Cleverly gave us the unexpected, the unedited, the expected, and the inevitable. And pushed Pozzo to the edge, eliciting not 1 but 2 statements from the silent one. He gave his heart and left many heartbroken …sheep without a shepherd, and a broken Baah. A poor but predictable sacking.

I'd vote Jokanovic as the best and Ismael as the worst, by far.

The worst decision was sacking Bilic.

That’s why personally I said Pre-Everton. His record and how we played before the approach, coupled with he’s record since clearly show he’s a more than capable manager.

The Everton approach coupled with the fact we didn’t give him what he wanted player wise are the clear context for the 1 win in 11.

What I do agree is odd is so many people are going for Hodgson based on personality, which by the same logic would mean far less people should go for Silva given he wanted out of our club at the first opportunity.

If we’re basing it on talent and outcomes, Hodgson is definitely not the worst but Silva is up there as the best, though.

I know it's post Pozzo but I'm including all the ones I've seen.

    Best
    1. GT (of course)
    2. Ken Furphy (got us to the heady heights of the second division and that FA Cup quarter and semi).
    3. Tom Cleverley (maybe a bit because of fresh memories, but a great servant to wfc both as a player and a manager. I liked his clear and honest as possible communication too.)
    4. Walter Mazzari (greatly underrated. Even kept Deeney in line. A good tactician. Surly. A smoker. A lot to like about him.)
    6. Zola (entertaining football perhaps given a shine by the influx of quality new players at that time).
    7. Joka (not a great communicator, but a decent manager and tactician)
    8. Quique Sánchez (some exciting football on occasions and famous flamenco auntie)
    9. Beppe Sanino (we saw his face on the pitch, but then he got upset and 'threw the apron' as we working classes say).
    10. Malky McKay

    Worst in no particular order
    Mike Keen
    George Kirby
    Hodgson
    García (DNS)

Joka, QSF v1.0, Mazz, Silva, Gracia were all superb appointments, made at the right time.

Every appointment since 2019 (excl maybe Pearson) has been poor. QSF v2.0, Ranieri & Hodgson the worst.
