You slagged off the new forward we have signed and many others I suspect. You think Wilmot will develop in to a very good player. I don't but it's not our opinion that counts. Maybe the club thought he might develop but isn't good enough currently for the Premier League which I don't think anybody can argue about. Look to loan the player out but Wilmot doesn't want another loan, he wants to get settled at a club and try to progress. We make him available and the best deal for us and the player was Stoke. Some might want more money but clubs have to bid more for that to happen and then the player has to want to go that club. We could have asked Stoke for more but they could have said no and we are then left with an unhappy player which is no good for anybody

Agreed. He just needs to be told to belt the ball upfield/out unless a really simple pass is on. He will never be a "good passer".

Agreed, hopefully we have a sell-on clause which would be easier for a cash-strapped club to agree to today - just make them pay a decent % out of cash they receive on a future sale.

I'm worried about WTE yes his passing is poor but my main concern is the way he turns is head and body out of the way while going in for a challenge and a block. You take the ball in the face or wherever to stop the opportunities.

The caveat of course is every football club will have unhappy players. You don’t have to sell them on the cheap just because of that.

The crux of the issue isn’t his happiness - that’s just one factor. If his unhappiness bleeds into unprofessionalism, then that’s a bigger problem. Wilmot doesn’t seem that type to me.

  6. Knight GT

    Knight GT Predictor extraordinaire 2013/14

That is true but if he is unhappy and has asked to leave I'm glad we've allowed it. Clearly not going to be part of the immediate future so best to part ways in my view

    Quina was woeful, and
We all want the young players to make it, don't be ridiculous. What I'm referring to is the unrealistic clamour that comes with the young players who arrive here.

I'm going to point out Tommie Hoban - he was a superb Championship defender for us with clear Premier League potential. Because of injuries and bad loan spells he ended up leaving the club for 0, it is very possible that the same thing could have happened to Wilmot and that would have been an even greater financial loss for the club. We don't know the ins and outs of this deal, but what we do know is that he's far from a Premier League CB at the moment. Hopefully the development of Pollock is handled better.

I don’t disagree with any of that.

The issue for me is, we should never be in that position. We should have played him more in the championship. We should have offered him a new deal.

I don’t blame Ben for wanting out, I blame the club for pushing out a talented England u21 international, a 21 yr old CB with massive potential. We’re going to regret it.

Just another example of young players not being trusted. Another reason why academy players don’t want to stay. Another reason why other young players will choose other teams over us, because we won’t play them.

Someone should tell Baah, Pollock, Dennis and Louza then?

Apparently was very unhappy with the game time. Reading between the lines, if I'm not going to play I want to go somewhere I will. Who knows what happens in private but would be surprised if we let him move without him asking

How many academy players have actually be good enough though? Sancho is the only one who has made it in like a decade.

It is a bit of a circular argument - we put very little funding / effort into the academy and thus produce very few good enough players that the club don't really see it is as a viable source of players and those that are good enough are just poached by big clubs due to EPPP. Those players we do produce that are good enough would thus rather go to academies with actual funding.

Think it was pretty clear from his Twitter activity that he wasn't happy with the way he was treated, and wants to be playing every week. Can't blame him for that, and he won't get that here, so not sure why it's so controversial to cash in.

He's still got a lot of time to develop but he seemed decent at a few things without being excellent at anything. He's okay on the ball and reads the game fairly well. He's not particularly slow but he's not pacy, and he can have a tendency to be bullied by big strikers.

Every club in the Championship will have been alerted that he was available for £2m, and from the sounds of it, no one was willing to start a bidding war. I think that says a lot about Wilmot's level, and the financial situation of most Championship clubs.

So it’s nothing more than speculation then? It’s just as likely he didn’t ask to leave - but Stoke need a CB, identified Wilmot and put in a low bid which we have accepted. Sure we can read between the lines but there’s far more than can also be assumed too.

Guehi would probably cost 10 times that and would have been a PL defender last season if he wasn't at Chelsea.

One is realistic and the other isn't.

Since the Euros are on at the moment and they are the 2020 Euros, then I think we are actually in 'the season before last'.

One is good enough for the PL, the other isn't, and we'll be playing in the PL next season. That's the simple point.

I dont disagree - but we are a newly promoted side and there are quite a few players that I expect will play a part next season who won't fulfil that first criteria. the thing Wilmot has going in his favour is that he is 21 and he may turn out to be PL quality in the future whereas most of those players are late 20s / early 30s and probably headed in the other direction.

I dont see the point you are making about Guehi who isn't our player and is totally out of our price bracket.

I doubt he was sold because he was unhappy. I expect he was sold as 1/he wasn't going to play in the prem 2/didn't want to go out on loan again and therefore his development and his resale value would both plummet whilst he rotted in the reserves waiting for his contract to end. It also wouldn't have helped squad unity to force him to stay.

He's a very ambitious lad. He was just unfortunate that Sierralta was exceptional, otherwise he would have been in there while Kaba and Cathcart were injured.

Was never going to sit around picking up a wage - fair play to him. Constant loans don't help. He certainly has the right attitude, he just lacks some of the physical attributes.

Last night he was having a fitness test before the signing confirmed. It will be just our luck that he does ok on the cups and saucers, but fails with slip problems with his jugs. Probably Stoke will also reject him for having bone china legs too

Baah and Pollock have been completely f*cked over by their agents with moving here. Honestly I do not see more than 5 Prem starts for the pair of them here.

He was never going to shine being shunted from side to side, one day in the middle, one day a winger (which isn't really a criticism of Vlad as he was only working with what he had). Quina quite possibly would have worked well in that advanced midfield role we had after Coventry, it's not like Zinck was an absolutely roaring success yet we still did well

Again if the young player is good enough he will be played. JP got plenty of minutes and showed vast improvements in strength especially. Yes he's played U21 for England but is far off first choice. But they have to be first of all good enough to play for the first team then the age becomes irrelevant.

He was unhappy about not playing. He was very unlikely to be playing next season. If he is told this you would assume that he would want to leave. His social media said he was unhappy (apparently). This does not sound like a player who wanted to stay and he may not have officially slapped in a transfer request but he intimated that he wants to play so going somewhere else was the only option.
I don't think it's an especially low bid considering The Championship is probably the highest level he could currently play at and clubs at the level are not exactly cash rich at the moment.
    Hope he does well

Rightly so if they prove not to be good enough. If they do show enough talent, like Pedro, they will play.

The point I was making about Guehi was in reference to your comment here:

"If we were linked with an English U21 ball playing centre back for £2m everyone on here would probably be buzzing."

Both Wilmot and Guehi fit the above description of being "an English U21 ball playing centre back".

I was pointing out that from your criteria alone it doesn't automatically mean that if we were linked with a player matching said description that many of us "would probably be buzzing" - if the player matching said description who we were linked with was Guehi, or of his quality, then many would no doubt be buzzing. But if we were linked with someone of just Wilmot's quality then many wouldn't be "buzzing" as he's not good enough for the PL and might never be.

Next season they'll probably get 0 PL starts between them, unless we have a huge injury crisis or they impress way beyond expectations.

They'll probably both start all the cup games, and if they do alright then they might get the occasional cameo in the PL.

I suspect both would have been well aware of the situation, given their ages and where they were playing last season it seems highly unlikely they'd be expecting to play many PL games just yet.

They are for the long term - shouldn’t expect them to get into the team .

  33. Dux has said the club recognised it went in the wrong direction over the last few years and it will go back to the originally intended operating model.

From here on I expect to see younger players given a chance... if they are good enough and ready.

I don't imagine Baah or Pollock will feature much this year, the next 6-12 months for them is a series of steps. The level of football played on the training pitch for a start is going to be way quicker, way more technical, way more mistakes punished. Hughes took at least a year to make the step up to the PL from Champ.

He's very suspect at a lot of things beside passing. Aerially he can't seem to get a good jump on his man, he's not the quickest, he gets outmuscled by virtually everyone, he can't seem to get a good challenge in on the floor, he gets pulled out wide and gets beaten far too often. It's really bizarre watching such a big guy fail at basic aspects of defending like tackling and winning headers.
