Thought I'd start thread for the fans of movies with some depth to have a discussion.

Got a Tarkovsky box set for xmas, so will be working my way through that.

Mirror and Stalker are two classics that I saw at The Prince Charles last year.

Anyone seen that Scorcese film Silence ? Was wondering if it was any good.

    Oooooooooh what's in it?

I'm a fairly frequent visitor to The Phoenix.

Somebody posted something on the ARRSE about not being able to listen to a couple of Xmas-time songs because of being taken to an anti-war film (1963 "The Victors") when he told his Dad (a heavily medalled/damaged WWII vet) he was going to join-up:

I spent a couple of weeks trying to 'source' a decent copy as the youtube print is pretty ropey:

My sister got me a Lars von Trier box-set for Xmas and due due to a mislabelling error they were gifted to my 78 YO Cockney mother. I'm a big fan of his Dogme 95 work but not too familiar with his other films - I've told my mum to definitely watch the astonishing "Breaking the Waves" (probably von Trier's most accessible film) and if she 'liked' that to try the other ones...

It’s got all his movies 5 or 6 in total and a couple of docos about his work etc .

I bet your grandma is having a right old cockney Xmas with her new box set

It's my mother. TBF to the Old Girl when, in 2003, I got tickets for the Dogville 'premiere' (at the Phoenix) and my wife couldn't make it she did go to that and she did remark that once she "...got into it..." it was quite good - although that might have had something to do with the three glasses of akvavit (courtesy of the Danish Embassy "...tastes like licorice allsorts...") before the screening.

EDIT: Isn't the Odyssey s'posed to show a selection of pretentious old wnak arthouse movies?

Does have some, but generally leans more towards crowd pleasers.

The best art house film I’ve seen recently is The Quiet Girl. It’s a tremendous bit of short story telling, with an emotional punch. Really hard to make a story so simple grip you so hard from start to finish. Pure show, not tell.

I saw this recently. Superb. About a group of kids in a guerilla training camp in hills of South America.

I used to frequent a number of 'art house' cinemas in soho until the police closed them down

I never 'got' those places - what did you feel lonely masturbating and felt the need to do with group of other men in a similar predicament?
