He has done well for himself considering he was on the football scrapheap and that shows a lot of determination and perseverance. To go from that to becoming a PL player, full international and scoring against Germany should be an example of where hard work can get you. Unfortunately I think his best time for us was under Zola who seemed to get the best out of him as a player. Cassetti-Anya-Forestieri-Hogg-Deeney will always be remembered. Best of luck to him. Model professional who will thrive in the Championship alongside Vydra.
Good luck to him. A good move for everyone involved if you ask me. A great professional too, didn't quite work out for him at a young age stuck at it and look at him now; a greatly overlooked story of dedication from a footballer. Always got excited when he knocked the ball past the oppo's full back and turned it into a foot race and of course who can forget his part in that goal. Hope he does well.
Gino knows how to make cash doesn't he £12m for Vydra? £4m for Nyom, another £4m for Anya, Layun was £6m? Jurado £1.5m, Abdi £4m, Poodle £1.5m, a fee I assume for Suarez Circa £33m in and not one key player sold Excluding Success (which in reality is wooden dollars) we've spent £40-something m, so the uprated squad has been done for about ~ £10m?
How the actual f**k have we got £4,000,000 for Anya? Wouldn't pay 400k for him! Football clubs should employ me to negotiate for them!!
Yep, at no point until the second after he scored did any Watford fan think that he was actually going to score. Love the little guy, always gave his all, but is not quite where we are right now.
Top WFC player. Sad to see Vydra and Forestieri go, always think Abdi good enough anywhere and know he'll make it, but really respect Anya's attitude and commitment, so best of luck to the guy.
Ignoring the inclusion of Jurado who was sold at a loss just one year after joining......... Yeah genius
was either him, Deeney or Watson who had to make way for Mariappa. Jakubiak frees up an u21 space for Sinclair. It's so very complicated.
I am glad that I never have to hear that Anya chant - perhaps the worst of the Pozzo era. Although as a key part of the DEENEY!!! move, I'll always be fond of him.
Other than the fact Layun is probably worth double that now, to agree that release clause was silly. A hit on Jurado, Abdi's wages and bonuses over 4 years probably equalled £4 million, Suarez cost £4 million and 40k a week, sent on loan 6 months later definitely made a loss on that. Forestieri now worth 7 times what we sold him for. Weren't the best examples to use.
Not great a great example to use the wages of players that we had to pay while we had them either. Its the same for every club, everyone has a 25 man squad and everyone has to pay those players while they own them, Abdi was a great servant to the club for four years and then we sold him for a decent amount of money, obviously we also had to pay him while he was here as well!
You can't use player wages in your argument without factoring in their contribution, yes Abdi cost £4m in wages but he also was key to our success over the last 4 years, we may not be in the Prem without him and possibly £100m poorer. Ditto all other players have contributed in some way. If you want to argue player wages (overhead) then you must compare revenue also (income) I'm sure our 15/16 and 16/17 financial statements will be quite healthy What amazed me was the cash generated from fringe players (we didn't sell anyone we didn't need) and enhanced the squad for comparatively little cost
Is Layun worth double that? Porto tried to get rid of him this window. But saying a release clause is silly when you're using hindsight is ridiculous. Were they meant to see into the future and see that he'd get loads of assists?
Good look Ikechi - been an excellent part of our growth as club, great attitude and did a lot for us without fuss. I would have loved to see him stay personally but if his game time here is going to be limited then he's made a great move to Derby where I hope he becomes a favourite of theirs.
I will always remember his performance at Birmingham away, if only he could of delivered that type of display more often. Always tried but did not always deliver.
Simply nowhere near good enough for the Premier League, unfortunately. Could never fault his application and as others have said he will always be remembered for his part in the Deeney goal, but all in all a good move for both the club and the player.
