Watford have expressed an interest in Alan Smith.

Manchester United have been willing to loan Smith out to aid the striker's bid to return to full fitness after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Smith has already rejected a move to Cardiff City, while former club Leeds United had also been keen to explore a deal.

Now Boothroyd admits he has enquired about taking the forward on loan in January, although he is unsure if his bid will be successful.

"I have enquired about Alan," Boothroyd, who already has United keeper Ben Foster on loan, told the Watford Observer.

"If we were to have a go at getting Alan we couldn't get him until January, which is probably good as he may go somewhere else first.

Boothroyd is keen to sign a striker in the New Year after losing Marlon King to injury for the rest of the season.

i'd love to have him here, hes a really hard-working striker, but i can't really see this happening.

I'd love this to happen. I think he's the kind of player who would do really well with AB.

I would think it would be his and manures prefered scenario... give him premiership rather than championship games.

To be fair I would have been pretty suprised if Aidy hadn't given this a punt.

With our links with ManUre I'm sure the response would be positive if loaning him out is an option. Would be up to Alan as well though.

Exactly... and i would think he would be more likely to go to a club in the prem rather than the championship to give him the right experiences he needs to stand a chance at getting back in the manure first team.

I've always like Alan Smith, I'd love it if we got him on loan for a while. One thing I've never had explained to me though is exactly who pays his wages?

Depends on the deal. Typically the borrowing club pays a proportion of wages, anything up to 100%.

I think in this instance manure would settle for a lesser percentage as its in their interests to get him back to his best.. and first team playable.

Besides he's probably on a lot more than we should afford.

Mind you if Cardiff think they can afford him I'm sure we can have a whip round.

you guy's are forgetting that he has valuable 'relegation battle' experience with (we all hate) leeds. although he came out on the wrong side of it his experience + never say die attitude will fit right in at watford aswell as gettin prem games not fizzy pop ones! not to say we will be in a relegation battle;)

do you think he would play well with hendo?

possibly. was hoping that if we got him, hendo wouldn't play! perhaps play him with either mc hameur or ashley

I cant see why hendo keeps getting picked... he has done nothing to impress this season and i wasnt a great fan of his last season... alot of promise but non really fulfilled

fully agree with ya wfchornet2. i don't think he is anywhere near prem quality and the sooner with get a new striker the quicker he is out of the team. every time i think of him i just think of the BLATENT miss against charlton. how did he do that. i dont think i could of done that if i tried!

Watford have expressed an interest in Alan Smith, but Adrian Boothroyd has ruled out a bid to bring Heidar Helguson back to Vicarage Road.

"But I don't really see it happening because he needs time to get back into the groove of things."

Boothroyd is keen to sign a striker in the New Year after losing Marlon King to injury for the rest of the season.

The Hornets had been linked with an attempt to lure Helguson, who left for Fulham in 2005, back to the club.

But the Watford boss has cooled the speculation and currently has no plans to make a move for the Iceland international.

He added: "I haven't contacted Fulham about Heidar and I think he's playing regularly for them anyway."

Smith won't go anywhere. He is desperate to make it at United.

true but he could be a sweetener for the owen hargreaves deal?

That said it is more likely he WOULD go somewhere on loan for a few months to get his fitness and game back to the max to give him a fighting chance at getting picked at united... they have Saha, Rooney and Solskjaer to contend with for a place... all proving to be very good at the job.

Getting Smith here would be a fantastic bit of business by Adie if he can pull it off.
