This technological revolution is happening too soon for humanity.
It really should wait until we have advanced enough as a species that we dont have billionaires or dictators.

"Our new approach is based on strong principles so that people can trust businesses to unleash this technology of tomorrow,” said the science, innovation and technology secretary, Michelle Donelan.

That means they're going to do nothing to regulate. Instead we are going to "trust businesses".

That seems fair. We can surely trust businesses to do what's best for everyone and not just for themselves. No?

There won't be unemployment credit. That's the entire point of UBI.

There also won't be any jobs, at least for the vast majority of people. It's not about something doing your job. It's about there not being any jobs to work at.

Yes I understand UBI but just don’t see any possibility that it happen how it’s proponents envisage. It will effectively be a souped up unemployment benefit. You think AI will do everything? No employees ? If you don’t, you think some will continue to work and some will be off playing golf both earning the same decent income ? UBI is just a nice theory to stop workers worrying about their jobs disappearing.

In every country? Tea pickers in India? Sweat shop workers in Bangladesh? Farmers in sub-Saharan Africa?

Or are we just talking about the “developed” world?

AI will destroy a lot of jobs in short term but long term will create more jobs than it replaces.

Ever since the dawn of weaving machines people have been creating doomsday scenarios about each new advance in technology.

Elon musk on bbc news website tonight re risk of out of control AI development.

“The letter follows a recent report from investment bank Goldman Sachs which said that while AI was likely to increase productivity, millions of jobs could become automated.”

If you're asking if full automation is a prerequisite for the workforce being almost entirely redundant, then the answer is yes. Countries certainly won't get there at the same rate.

Yes. I also wonder whether it will remain cheaper to use human labour than to use AI in low income countries. Many such industries seem to have been relatively untouched even by the Industrial Revolution. To my mind AI may well exacerbate the divide between the Global North and Global South still further.

The GS report I attached above shows impact by job type and by country, and by type of impact (ie replace or supplement). Largest impact will be in the Developed world.
Very detailed report, though bear in mind there is a vested interest for someone like GS to want to calm expectations rather than create panic in markets !

The French are up in arms, screaming shouting and fighting about any little thing. Other than an invasion by the German army of course.
