Bloody hell this is not very good news at all! Thought we were aiming for Category 1 not settling for category bloody three!

    Not happy.

Before we all panic like it's the end of the "Watford Way", can anyone explain the differences between Categories 1, 2 and 3 please?

I can understnad this in the short term as we would have to enter the U21 league and we are not good enough. I imagine that we will loan out a lot of players to get them playing instead. The academy keeps going but on a smaller scale due to the funding I would guess. I would hope in the future that we try to get it up to level 1 as otherwise any young talent we have can be pinched. Does anybody know if Udinese or Granada have decent academy's or do they rely on the scouting system to make money. I would interested to know the in more detail the thought behind this but I was under the impression that the academy was one of the reasons for coming here.
It's the first concern I've had since they took over and I'm not doubting them just find this bit strange and a smidge worrying.

Aldershot Town, A.F.C. Bournemouth, Crawley Town, Dagenham & Redbridge, Gillingham, Leyton Orient, Luton Town, Milton Keynes Dons, Northampton Town, Peterborough United, Southend United, Stevenage, Swindon Town, AFC Wimbledon are all catagory 3, so it shows how they're viewing our academy.

    Its a disgrace

Basically, the EPPP allows clubs to poach players from other academies more easily. For example, Category 1 can take a pick from anyone in the below academies, Category two can take from 3 and have there's taken by Category 1. Basically with this we'll be able to have all our players pinched more easily. What on earth are they thinking?

    Money reasons do you think?

Surprised as the Pozzo's are know for developing youth players..

The categories dictate a set price for players of a certain age, with the prices seemingly very low.

"For each year in an academy between ages 9-11: £3,000
For each year in a Category 3 academy between ages 12-16: £12,500
For each year in a Category 2 academy between ages 12-16: £25,000
For each year in a Category 1 academy between ages 12-16: £40,000"

Funding from the Premier League for youth development is paid to each club based on their category also: " This will range from £775,000 per year (one-third of the cost of a Category One academy) down to an £100,000 for a Category Four academy (two-thirds of the running costs). These subsidies will increase gradually over the four year life of this EPPP agreement."

Category 1 clubs are also exempt from the 90 minute rule, meaning elite clubs can sign youth players from around the country.

Category 2 is considered "academy" level in the old system. Category 3 is considered similar to old style "centers of excellence".

  10. This is fekking appalling. Suddenly a lot of blind faith in the Pozzos goes out the window. Harefield has, as it were, failed. 'They were attracted to Watford because of the Academy'. *******s.

“The commitment of the club to young players remains the same,” added Nani - yes, so long as we can hoover them up cheaply in South america and west africa.

This is ten times worse than sacking Dyche.

Category 1 can steal our academy players having given 48 hours notice for as little as £3k. The premier league threatened to withold academy funding if the football league disagreed. We may well be heading towards the PL but it's another reason I can't stand it

Exactly, surely the benefits of being a Category 1 academy massively outweigh the negatives of getting a bit of a drubbing in the U21 league.

Palace are entering into the U-21 league, so there's no good reason why we can't.

Nani might as well have just come out and said we're cutting the academy loose

I'm stunned. Nani almost talks like the fans have no idea how the Academy system works.

Perhaps he's the one that doesn't.

The fact that people are surprised by this is what shocks me.

Who needs our own young, British players when the Pozzos can just send a load of youngsters from their other clubs and benefit more from doing so?

This above all has seriously pissed me off, Dyche I could live with, this is a joke.

Our first team is looking pretty horrific for the Palace game too.

    Exactly.

I've been behind the Pozzo's since they've taken over, but to me this looks like they have reneged on everything they promised wouldn't happen. This seems to firmly show we are nothing more than Udinese's feeder club

There's nothing to say that Harefield can't continue as it is without Cat 1 or 2 EPPP status is there? Less protection obviously over our young players but once they're on Pro contracts the EPPP "price guide" is irrelevent isn't it?

And it was only yesterday that people on here were saying how terrible it was to throw a young team to the lions (12-0 last night) yet now it's fine for them to get stuffed every week as long as it's by Man Utd kids and not semi-pro adults!

Yes, but we can't sign them on Pro contracts until they're a certain age, I believe. Which is the problem.

We were protected when City sniffed around Murray a few years ago, if that happens again and City have a Cat 1 status (which I can't believe they won't), I doubt 'well grounded parents' will stop anyone leaving.

Haha oh no is he worse than Bassini now :':)':)':)'(

Everyone has said from the beginning Nani and Duxbury are useless. And the first team isn't looking 'pretty horrific' ?! It's just not what everyone was DREAMING of, it's a realistic squad. Calm down.

  24. What I read into it is that it (the academy) has done OK for a club at our level but is only going to very rarely produce A Youngs, and slightly more regularly OK players like Sordell and Marriappa, and is actually not worth the extra cost of going for Cat 1.

    Harefield has indeed failed.

Getting beaten every week does not help development, however I am amazed by what they've done. I was hoping for category 1 and didn't even know about 3! I wasn't bothered about Dyche but I find this a very strange decision and it seems everybody is in agreement for a change. I look forward to an explanation as to why one of the best academys in Europe that many sides have copied is being downgraded by the the very club that runs it?

Never has a post been more self contradictory!
How can we be a feeder club if we are not going to in effect run a vibrant academy
We are not a feeder club - we are a farm - growing finished product for Udinese
However the fundementals are as they were - the biggest prize of all is promotion to the PL
So unless they are stupid - why wouldn't they still want to achieve and sustain this and why should we care if a kid from harrow or a kid from naples or montevideo scores the goals that achieves it

Category 2 I could understand, but Category 3 is ridiculous for an academy of our size.

Brighton, Charlton, Coventry, Crystal Palace, Derby have all managed to fund it, so why can't we???

dont matter tbh the academy cant even beat barton rovers or even score agaisnt them and loose 12 nil they aint good why would anyone want any of those players? please telll me one player worth £3k out of that team?

Our first team isn't looking horrific, our team for this Saturday is looking pretty horrific, in the sense that these players can't play the way Zola wants, with the likes of Garner and Yeates out there, we will get stuffed. I wouldn't actually care, but for a club who have privately set their aim as promotion, the team for Palace, worries me.

How can you tell everyone calm down when, the academy, our biggest asset, is being taken away from us. You realise under these rules, Sean Murray would have gone to Man City for 80k or so two years ago?

Not happy about this but remember that there are many add ons to this. 20% sell on fee plus 5% of any further transfers and money for appearances up to 100.

We were warned about the shady figures of Nani and Duxbury. So far, bullsh!t statements and this. I suggest a protest, not violent, but chanting (difficult in our ground) aimed at Nani. You may think that's over the top, I don't. This is worse than changing a badge or colour of kit a la Cardiff. THIS is our identity. This was our future and this was years worth of hard fuccking graft from those who understood the club.

The last 3 weeks I've been quite mute on here. Doubting the vision these guys have and after Saturdays FECKIN awful performance, I'm seriously pissed off I brought a palace ticket.

Answers please Nani, not the usual Duxbury bullsh!t

That doesn't look too worrying to me. On the bench Whichelow, Iwelumo, Buaben, Hall, Massey, Geigo?

Yes but I also realise that is up to the player if he decides to leave. Hopefully when Murray seals his big move they will realise following the Young/Murray/Sordell(sort of) path is the way to go.
