He also put out a post saying "now is the time to rest and go back to the premier league with Watford".

Probably more definitive than some emojis but we will see.

Probably. But you never know in this world. Elon Musk could tweet out a picture of a turd and Bitcoin would lose £100,000,000,000 in value overnight.

Dare I say it, I think we might nearly be there in terms of signing players from outside of the Pozzo empire.

Looks like Young and Fletcher are already coming. Doig maybe too. Add to these Baar, Louza and Pollock.

Imagine the Pozzo's loan us back Geri and also De Paul. It's within their abilities to do this. We add Cucho to the mix, then suddenly it starts looking very decent.

GK - Foster, Bachmann, Dahlberg, Elliot
    LB - Masina, Young, Doig
    RB - Kiko, Ngakia
CB - Sierralta, Kabasele, WTE, Cathcart, Wilmot, Pollock
MF - Hughes, De Paul, Louza, Chalobah, Cleverley, Gosling, TDB
LW - Pedro, Deulofeu, Sema, Baar
    RW - Sarr, Zinckernagel
FW - Deeney, Cucho, Fletcher, Gray

Maybe another striker of quality (Borre??) and if we got someone like him we loan out or sell Gray.

I think that team would have more than enough to stay up. Maybe a weakness at CB, so wouldn't I have an issue if we also managed to sign someone of higher calibre for that position.

However, if we did go down, both De Paul and Geri go back to their parent clubs. Gray would be off the wage bill as out of contract, and Sarr would be sold, so the squad would not be severely impacted. We'd still have enough quality to bounce back and it would be affordable.

Even in this fantasy scenario we look weak up top. Really need to lose Gray and sign a better CF than Fletcher. I don't mind Fletcher as a backup. Relatively low risk and a (slim) chance he will come good. Am unconvinced by Cucho.

Maybe......but it all makes sense. Watford are the Pozzo's cash cow and is the only reason they are invested in us. It makes them money with the fantastic revenue streams open to them. They have to keep Watford in the Premier League or else it just doesn't makes sense. The cheapest way to do that is to give us a bit of quality from players they already own.

Ok, Udinese fans won't like it, but football is a ruthless business. It's all for the greater good. They don't really need De Paul or Geri on order to stay in the top league, whereas we probably do.....certainly someone like De Paul would have a greater impact on our hopes of staying up then at Udinese. A EPL shop window for De Paul as well. I think it's certainly something they would be considering.

Gerri will either go to Spain or stay in Udinese. De Paul has single handedly kept that team up. Without him they're are terrible, he's the heartbeat of the team and all the decent play goes through him. If he goes without significant quality added they will go down next season.
Anyways clubs are still desperate for him as they have been most windows over the last few seasons but nobody coughs up the required fee. It could happen again and this is the case there is a tiny chance we could get him. I hope so .

This is how I see it. It's not a sellers market. The Pozzo's only own two big ticket players across the two clubs. De Paul and Sarr. The rest are all largely under the £20m mark. They will sell him if a club comes in with a big offer, but I just don't see that type of trade this year. Maybe next year after some hopeful back to normality adjustment, clubs will be happier to spend big again, but for now I think the wise move will be to retain all big assets and deploy them strategically.

The Premier League is a much better window for someone like De Paul. EPL clubs will see exactly how well he does and that will be enough to produce a big offer in 12 months from now. The Pozzo's hold the cards with him at the moment, as he still has 3 years left on his contract. For me, a lot of things make sense to loan him over to us. We gain a terrific player, who would significantly increase our chances of staying up, De Paul gets a new challenge in a much better league, the Pozzo's give him more exposure thus optimising their chances of selling at a good price. The only loser is Udinese, but I'm sure they can sign a cheaper player who will bridge the gap vacated by De Paul.

Personally I think it's a no brainer to do this. The only thing stopping it is if someone comes in with a big bid which the Pozzo's accept or De Paul himself refuses to play for us.

Trust me I totally agree. There is always that little hope. Recently read that Atletico are interested but can't find the money, they've just won the title, so we never know until we know.

Agree - if that is our strike force then we are down.

I think we need two new strikers (not counting Fletcher). I'd be ok with Borre and Ugbo - we'd need them both to be ok, or one of them to hit a purple patch. Any striker we get will have some risk attached but those two seem to be worth taking.

The perseverance with Deeney and Gray is the definition of a sunk cost fallacy. We know that they and Fletcher are average (at best) Championship strikers - ludicrous to believe they would be enough.

The only scenario where it would make sense to bring on Deeney would be if we are defending a corner in the last 30 seconds or if we are winning by 3 clear goals. The only scenario in which I could imagine starting Deeney is if the opposition team has no defenders or goalkeeper.

Glad to see we are thinking alike in quite a lot of things yet again, especially about DePaul and him being showcased through us in the PL to hopefully attract the sort of price the Pozzo's want for him.

However I do not agree with you on our strike force.!!! The strike force really must be improved if we are to have any chance of staying in the Premier League.

Yeah. We'll get relegated next season. I would be delighted if we improved the squad by this much, but it still probably won't possess enough fire power imo.

Totally agree, it's a buyer's market. If the vaccines hold more fans will be allowed back in the stadiums and clubs will feel they can spend more next summer. A good season with us in the prem could add at least £10m to De Paul's value in that scenario.

Jeez, you are so anally retentive, it’s incredible.
I doubt Deeney will live up to the target he claims to have set for himself. I was simply positing an interpretation of his comments that did not automatically assume it means he will demand to start every game ‘or else’.
In whatever world you inhabit, such concepts as ‘open to interpretation’ clearly do not exist.

Well all jokes and insults aside, if Deeney is our starting striker next season, I will genuinely stop supporting Watford and find myself another club.

I suggest Man City for a couple of years until someone else eclipses them, and then you can switch to that team. I’m holding fire until the Super League finally and deservedly becomes reality, and then I have my eye on Barca.

It would obviously because of the gross negligence of our owners, not because I want to see winning football. I’d more than likely support a non league team.

I'm sorry but anyone who thinks a 33 year old Deeney would cut it in the PL knows nothing about football. It's a debate in name only. A lot of former sportsmen in their 40s are in better shape than Troy. He was shyte in the champo, dragging the whole team down to his level and will be a disaster in the PL. Its sad to think some Watford fans are that clueless about football. You have my utmost sympathy.

Troy knows he's not good enough, he's just trying to talk his way into his final £3.5million payday. All his self promotion since the end of the season is just Troy singing for his supper. £3.5m will buy a lot of kebabs in Chelmsly wood. Its all about the money now. Three and a half million quid for doing F all is what Troy's after. He knows he wont have the legs to help us next season.

He isn’t the answer now clearly but be funny if Deeney left for Birmingham for example and then came back in the cup and scored !

People would probably chat his name like they did with Henderson that time.

“Clueless about football” = “Don’t agree with me”.

If you are so knowledgeable, why are you not managing a top flight team? Better still, why aren’t you managing Watford? I’m puzzled, given your extraordinarily superior knowledge compared with us mere mortals. We clearly would be in the Champions League with you at the helm.

Unfortunately the response you got was similar to when anyone criticised Mariappa. “If you don’t want Maps go and support Man City”. You can’t debate with oddballs like that.

Anyone with half a brain can see Deeney isn't a premier league striker. His current level is league 1. He's turning 33, his legs are gone and his body's shot. He's had issues with binge drinking, it's clearly taken it's toll. His body doesnt work properly anymore. It's not 2015. He just wants his last £3.5m payout from WFC.

FYI Football is my 4th biggest passion after travel, sex and music. I never had any interest in wasting the best years of my life doing sport, it's not my kind of lifestyle. Yet I'm pretty sure I, like most people on this forum, could've managed Watford to promotion in 12/13 with the squad we had and I'm pretty sure if I had £35 million to spend in the summer of 2019, I could have bought the central defender and 2 strikers we needed to stay up. I'm also pretty sure if I was a 33 year old perma-crocked has been, I wouldnt be trying to steal 3.5 million quid from WFC.
