Maybe Ighalo doesn't want to live in China. Its not just about money alone. Money and trophies usually for a lot of players.

On what planet would you accept the first bid for one of your players? Especially one from a club that has money to ***** and has a recent track record of paying well over the odds for a player? Iggy will be going and it'll probably be to this club (because no-one else is going to match this offer), but it'll be for a bigger fee

    What utter rubbish.

Come on, you can't tell me he's worth anything close to what we've just rejected. 15 was perhaps an exaggeration.

In fairness to Dev, his valuation is far closer to reality than the apparent valuation in China. I do find it hard to comprehend or believe that they feel he is worth £38m. There will be other agents fascinated by this, if true, and lining up alternatives to Iggy, if we do not do a deal with them quickly. I concur with the sentiment that the offer is simply far too good to turn down. I hope the Chinese do not call the Gino's bluff.

Whether this would be a good deal or not simply depends on whether we'd have a stronger team next season as a result of selling and reinvesting or whether we just have a stronger bank balance.

He's worth whatever a club will pay for him

Only at that particular moment. Man City paid £50m for Sterling - he's not worth that now. Probably indicative that he wasn't really worth it at the time.

If we sold Iggy for £38 million what do you think the chances are he'd ever be re-sold for more than £15m?

Worth and value are always liquid. It doesn't change the fact that right now Iggy is worth £38million, because that's what some Chinese club are willing to pay for him.

If he goes to China and scores goals, I can totally envision him being resold in excess of £15million. There are rich, desperate clubs all over the place.

In reality (i.e. not Football Manager or Stats websites) circumstances determine a player's worth more than his actual ability.

If this is true and it's on Sky Sports now then it is complete and utter lunacy. £38m? For crying out loud sell him

That if someone is willing to pay far in excess of what one of your assets is likely to be worth in the near future then in all likelihood it's a good idea to accept the offer.

If I offer you double the current market value to buy your house, the fact that I have made the offer doesn't make your house double in value. It's just a short term spike caused by me being a moron with an absurd bid and you should accept it and let me swallow the loss further down the line.

But, you can't predict the future. You can't say for certain that Iggy won't be worth £50m in the market 3 years from now

I can predict the future and I can say for certain he won't be worth £50 million in 3 years time.

Given your preference for digging up posts, I await to see this resurface in 3 years.

Your house isn't a brand, nor is it in the business of entertaining people. Analogy does not apply.

You're also forgetting that his valuation may will be different in China - an emerging football marketing with huge potential given the population and riches.

I'll drive him there for £20m let alone £38m

There's no guarantee any replacement will score Prem goals. It's a rare commodity. We don't need to sell Iggy so why risk doing so? It would probably p155 off the new manager too before he's even got going.

  19. Jumbolina

I can make an educated guess and say that based on what I have seen of him over two seasons there is a 99% chance he will be worth less than £38 million in and a significant chance he will be worth vastly less based on the amounts other players have transferred for. That seems a reasonable basis for suggesting we should accept.

  20. wfcmoog

    wfcmoog Tinpot

There's also no guarantee that Iggy will score prem goals at the rate we saw in the first half of last season. If second half Iggy is what we're getting from now on, he's worth about £4m.

I'd be pretty confident of finding someone as good as Iggy if I had £38m in my sky rocket.

I agree in principle, but you still need to buy another place to live (unless you have other properties at your disposal already). In such a circumstance, it is likely that other vendors will know that you are "in the money" and will inflate the price of their houses accordingly.

  22. Hornpete

Iggy will not ever be worth 38m if he moves to China. The only way he'll be worth more is if he went to a massive club and did well.

Wasn’t there a story somewhere that Success would only join if Ighalo was sold..? I imagine it could well have been rubbish/manoeuvring for a bigger contract but these bits of news both hitting almost simultaneously..
Maybe I’m putting 2+2 together and making 7!

I would Leave My house today if someone offered me 600k for it. live in a hotel for a month or two and buy somewhere else and pay off my mortgage.

Watford don't have a mortgage. Ighalo is not a house.

Of course but the other part of that equation is that he might. We don't need to sell.

There's no guarantee he will score any PL goals either after his performance in the 2nd half of last season. We could take the money and bring in two decent PROVEN PL strikers for that sort of cash! I'm thinking that Iggy might be a one season wonder, hopefully I'm wrong, but on balance I think we would be better off cashing in on him for that sort of money!

There's no guarantee that even a proven PL striker would do it for us. And anyway it's not an either/or situation. We could do that AND keep Iggy. We don't need to sell.

  32. Jumbolina

    Jumbolina First Team

The fact he is in the entertainment business or that it comes from China is irrelevant. It probably weakens the argument because Ighalo has a lesser "brand" than numerous other players who play regularly on the international stage.

  33. Jumbolina

    Jumbolina First Team

Afraid not. Planning permission was turned down as Deeney said it would block out his sunlight.

  34. Jumbolina

    Jumbolina First Team

Selling and buying similar house for £300k is same argument as selling Ighalo and buying an equal standard striker for £20 million. The Deeney question has other intangibles such as impact of captaincy, club icon etc. With Ighalo it just seems a question of comparing the offer to how much he is likely to be worth in a year's time. It isn't even close but obviously Gino disagrees with me so what do I know, but I think we are mad to turn it down.

  35. Jumbolina

    Jumbolina First Team

Yes that's a fair point. It still doesn't change the fact that Ighalo isn't "worth" £38 million in the future just because someone has put in a bonkers offer.
