Come on, give a COG sympathiser a break! It's my job to throw out potential excuses, valid or not...

In seriousness, I've no idea. Cucho has been in Spain at a higher level since time began and seemingly still wasn't up to UK immigration standards this summer.

There’s a difference between being eligible to apply for a Spanish passport and having a Spanish passport. Either way, this time last year Estupinan had had a good season in La Liga 2 and nothing more. He just had his breakout season. I don’t think he would have had such a breakout season if he’d been with us.

No Gino sympathisers allowed after I paid £10 to watch last nights game.

My understanding was that he was expected to be granted one but I imagine the whole Covid situation played merry hell with it all.

It could also be a bit tin foil of me, but I do think theat he may already have been granted one, but we are using it as an excuse to say he couldn't come rather than he didn't want to come.

As far as I know, Cucho isn’t waiting for UK immigration standards, but for a Spanish passport which will circumvent the need to get a work permit. I think that he has been in Spain a little longer than necessary to qualify for one, but (as someone that is tied up with immigration bureaucracy in another country) these things are taking quite a bit longer due to the pandemic.

If you pay £10 to watch Watford play in the second round of the Carling Cup, you deserve everything that came your way and more.

Exactly this and if the last few seasons has taught us anything its that some of these players cant be trusted to act professionally. The rumours, if true, about certain players refusing to play after the boro game are potentially evidence of that.

Not upset with this transfer. Good return on he club's investment. Never played for the club, therefore, no strong connection with the club or fan base. We have made a good profit and we need to cut our cloth and offload many more players. It will be a common feature of this forum over the next few weeks, although we will lose players who have represented us, which (almost) always brings some level of sadness.

I just have a hunch that we will still be left with a team/squad that can compete for promotion and within budget. I have been disappointed as a Watford fan in the past, so I am not guaranteeing anything.

Relegation was always going to be traumatic and I think with the departure of Doucoure, Estupinan and the liklehood of others to follow I think now the stark reality is now starting to fully hit home

In an ideal world it would be better for our older players to go first and to keep hold of our young guns but we cannot pick and choose who we sell and when. I suspect our finances are pretty dire and Gino although wealthy is not an owner who can afford to gamble as more wealthy owners can.

I am not yet totally resigned for us having an unsuccessful season but I do feel we need a few solid signings and not just Udinese cast offs to reassure not just me but other members of the squad

    That's not necessarily true.

Spanish citizenship for South American nationals requires two years of contiguous residency before you can apply.

He may not have applied immediately; he may not even have applied at all. If he did apply, his application may not have been completed yet.

It's not a case of just live in Spain for two years and then they just mail you your passport automatically.

I am not saying it is, but if after 3-4 years being there the club couldn't get it sorted that is on them.

Then again they clearly couldn't understand the "continous residence" requirement as we saw with Penaranda's loan to Udinese which added an extra two years.

To this, I would add that the Spanish are notoriously **** at paperwork, and the fiesta siesta culture only makes things worse.

Try living there and going to your local town hall to register for a doctor's surgery.. nightmare.

No, it really isn't. It's entirely possible he didn't want Spanish citizenship. The club can't force citizenship on someone; the player needs to be actively engaged in the process.

If Estupinan wasn't interested in filing then they have no way of forcing the issue. I would assume that the club retains immigration lawyers who specialise in helping players naturalize/obtain work permits, but those lawyers can't act without the player's consent.

I was eligible to naturalize long before I did, but I chose not to for a variety of reasons. My employers just had to accept it.

To be fair, if you’re using Watford CB’s as a yard stick - Wague wasn’t even worse than what we had or have had since. Not saying much mind you.

Not sure Cucho getting a Spanish passport would mean much for us at this stage given the Brexit transition period will be over by then

We all knew this was coming a few days ago, didn't we? We were in the **** really, Norwich were financially sound coming back down, Bournemouth not so much, but at least managed to raise a lot of money in sales and have an owner to cover debts, whereas we have lots of external debt, and for various reasons, our assets are harder to shift for good money. Deulofeu, Welbeck and Deeney have their issues with injuries, with the latter two being average at best, the South Americans understandably don't give too much of a **** about the club, but a) only have a reputation on the continent where money is tighter, and b) Estupinan's contract had began to run down (probably because he never planned to play for us). The only players guaranteed to generate decent fees are Doucoure (for whom £22-25m is nothing more than OK) and Sarr (who in fairness hasn't left yet, but for whom we may well have to accept £40m-ish)

We've been a shambles for a few years now, and as it turns out, some horrendous luck with injuries and a ******* global pandemic have amplified that

Thats an interesting question. Did the PL EFL FA ever resolve the rules post brexit or are they still all entrenched in disagreement?

Maybe Fulham haven't got a 90 million debt to pay off and 80 million owned to other clubs.

I presume this guy will be lining up for Madrid /Barca in 2 years and player of the next World Cup ...
Fair point if we were able too - could we not get a work permit ?

Let's sign players we can play straight away rather than ones we have to send away and then never actually get to see these guys

Shame he wasn’t good enough in the Spurs friendly to earn a permanent contract with us, but we can’t be just giving out squad places for charity.

Hope he finds himself a career at his level.

The only question mark about this was why we didn’t get him to sign a new contract last year. The reality is we may well have tried and he might have refused, not to mention that a season ago he hadn’t shown that he was any good. If we did try and get him to sign a new contract a year ago it wouldn’t have been a very good one because there was nothing to suggest it should be. If the player backed himself there is every chance he decided to gamble and not sign a new one and if that was the case he has been proven spectacularly correct not to do so.

If we’d stayed up there is a bigger chance he might have agreed to sign a new contract, but still absolutely no guarantees. He’s a South American whose never played for us and more than likely had never even heard of us, there is every chance he’d much prefer to be playing in Spain given the choice.

Not only have we got £15m for him we’ve also had loan fees for him for the past four years so we’ve probably made about £20m from a player that merely had potential before last season and nothing more.

Anyone expecting a South American kid who had never heard of Watford to sign a new deal and play in the second division definitely needs a new team and a new sport, and some sort of therapy.

If we’d stayed up then it would be more annoying but otherwise all things considered it’s the best possible outcome.

Of coures he’d heard of us, we’d been his employer for the last 3-4 years. What didn't exist was any attachment to the club.

We don't know that he didn't sign a new contract, it was hardly one we'd announce given his status. The local paper in Osasuna said that a key reason they couldn't afford him was that he was contracted to us until 2024. And the idea that we'd send him out on an initial two year loan with his contract up at the end of it clearly doesn't fit either. Think it's just been made up by people that want to believe we've got a great deal.

It is a good point though, if we are going to persist with this model there is an obvious benefit (and little cost i should think) in creating ways for these players to build and maintain a connection to the club.
