He looked a broken man at the end.
He'll need to give Lazarus a call to get his team to Wembley now.

I do get what you mean, but the simple fact is on the night Wednesday were well beaten. Peterbrough sliding into the playoffs because Derby drew on the final day right now is a godsend to Posh fans no doubt. I do agree about Wednesday fans' going to be livid but they still had/have a chance of promotion, and this is their last shot (this season). Are they going to overturn this at Hillsbrough? Very much doubt it, but Liverpool proved against Barca it's possible to overhaul a huge deficite in score. If they get knocked out now, which seems very likely it's no good them blaming the "lottery of the playoffs" for their downfall. They had a bad run last season and Ipswich took full advantage to overtake them, if not, Ipswich could well be losing heavily tonight. A league table doesn't lie, we finished eleventh because we deserved it. Sheff Wed finished third for this reason also. What they need to do now is really behind their side the return leg. It's football, anything can happen on a special night, especially in the playoffs.

It would be very very hard on him if he were to lose his job. A crazy number of points so you really can’t criticise over points dropped. The POs are a lottery with Lady Luck playing a massive role. SW were arguably the better side last night and lost 4-0 despite having more attempts on target than posh (8 to 6). They could easily have won 4-0 but they didn’t take their chances whilst posh were clinical.
I love the POs for that reason. They aren’t about being fair, they are about entertainment and giving all teams in the top half something to play for until close to the end of the season (even mid table WFC were still interested until the last 3 games or so). Originally they introduced POs for relegation too and I think it was right to stop them as it was just painful to watch.

Wasn't there big crowd trouble because of the pressure of having relegation on the line too back in the day?

The gap between the best and the rest in League 1 has grown massively, I remember one of our Burnley friends on here saying that Accrington Stanley fans have the same sort of feeling of hopelessness of ever progressing any further than mediocrity in that division as we would in the Prem at our respective bests, but Wednesday got enough points to get top 2 in literally any other season, so they can't help but feel slightly aggrieved

I was thinking of teams that have won a two-legged tie after being 4-0 down after the first leg.

There was us vs Southampton in the League Cup and Barca vs PSG in the Champions League (the only time that has been achieved in that competition).

So there’s a tiny chance given Posh typically don’t have a solid defence (they lost 5-0 at home to Bolton in the league) but the Wednesday fans really will have to play their part in roaring their team on and making Hillsborough as intimidating as possible. But do they have that kind of fan base?

No one's ever done it in the play-offs according to a BBC Sport article this morning. 4 teams have led by 4 goals after the first leg and all went on to the final. The biggest lead ever overturned is 2 goals.

To be honest would have preferred Derby going up, but ironically Sheffield Wednesday beat them in the final match, and let Peterborough into the playoffs. Looking at the teams now likely to go up - would prefer Peterborough to join Plymouth and Ipswich.

I'm guessing Ismael might have his eyes on a few Barnsley players, especially if they stay down. Granted they were relegated last season, but Ismael certainly managed to get a tune out of them

With next season in mind, I wanted to get an idea of the task that faces Valerian, Manga & Co. To this end, I have tried to understand the long-term trend of the club's performance. So (after many hours) I have produced a graph showing our FiveThirtyEight Soccer Power Index (SPI) scores over the last 6 seasons. I have shown only the trend line (for us and, for comparison, Burnley). I have also projected this into 2023/24 (using the Excel facility).

I am afraid it is not at all comforting. We have been on an increasingly strong downward trend for four years since late in the 2018/19 season - across numerous managers, relegation and promotion.

It is not impossible to turn around such a trend, but it requires a large 'force' to quickly change the direction of a something with a lot of momentum.

    upload_2023-5-13_14-21-43.png

I should point out that the trend lines are both 5th order polynomials. In simple terms they can 'wiggle around' a lot (compared to say a single arc or a straight line) to best fit the date. So, it is telling that the WFC curve is essentially a single are, compared to the Burnley line - three arcs. It means a 'wigglyer' line does not fit better (as you might expect if something, such as a manager change or promotion run, had had a significant effect on the trend).

    Note:
R squared is a measure of how well the trend line explains the underlying data. It varies from 0 (explains nothing) to 1 (a perfect fit). A value of 0.75 is considered a 'good' fit.

To be fair, there have been warnings of that - at the end of the 2017/18 League 1 season, Wednesday with the same points total with just two fewer goals scored would’ve missed out on autos on goals scored.

IIRC, there was trouble caused by Chelsea fans after their team got relegated by Middlesbrough in the play-offs (looks a completely different era and longer ago than 1988 now!).

Could there be another upset this afternoon?

Chesterfield who finished 23 points behind Notts County currently winning 1-0 and looking good value for it.

So Southampton joining us in the championship next season.

Not sure of their financial situation but you would imagine they will make good money off selling the likes of Ward-Prowse and co.

Sounds like a very similar story to ours in the sense of lots of unrest amongst the players, staff, board and fans.

This was a bad jinx for Luton on the BBC site :

“I've not written Amad Diallo's name yet.

The young Manchester United forward has had a great season on Wearside but he just hasn't had a kick yet today”

I actually wanted Luton to win. Mainly because I want them to lose in the playoff final so we can have TV do one of those montages of unhappy supporters .

This is a lie, to be honest I couldn't give a crap. Their supporters can be a bit orrible (to be expected if you have to put up with living in a caravan) but as a well run club I've no animosity to them. Much rather Bournemouth Palarse or QPR spiral into oblivion.

Leicester and Leeds I reckon. I think Everton have scrapped by again. Leicester will struggle next year, but I think Leeds will bounce back quickly. Southampton will also be there or thereabouts.

I don't know... Calvert Lewin might not start, and Muff have nothing to play for so might even come at them. Last time this was an end of season fixture was when we were relegated in 19/20. Muff won 3-0 but it still didn't save them. However Everton are jammy tykes so probably will do it. It's a perfect senario really, they can even lose and still survive. Leeds have to win and hope both Leicester and Everton lose, plus have to win by three goals. Sorry, not happening. Leicester I would love to see survive.

Think Leeds need some seriously focused recruitment to challenge. They've had a couple of poor transfer windows and also signed some players for a style a former head coach wanted rather than the current one. Sounds familiar!
