I hope they keep the format. It was much better without the pundits. I don’t mind the commentary during the game, and keep the theme tune, but the pre and post match analysis is not necessary. I always record MOTD and just fast forward past the pundit waffle.

Think that is what most do.

I mean it’s mostly about VAR anyway so they must get a bit bored themselves.

Isn’t the punditry just to flesh out the highlights as they can only show x minutes of action anyway ?
All the punditry does is show that every goal was scored as a result of poor defending and every miss should have been scored etc etc. plus of course a chance for big ears to smarm, and Shearer to look down his nose at everyone.

None of them are impartial. They all drone on about their former clubs. They have little interest in other clubs but their own.

In the past, it was Jimmy Hill. He’d introduce the match and that’s about it. There were no pundits from what I recall. A much better format.

Last night the viewing figures took a dramatic upturn. 500k more than usual. So maybe they’ll actually have a rethink about it all.

Viewing figures 500k up on last week, but not wildly higher than usual. It was lower than the highest audiences this season which, when you factor in the media hullabaloo and the novelty factor, really isn’t a great deal of a bump.

Jimmy Hill was a one-man pundit panel in the 80s, pointing out bad defending, re-showing the crucial moments and being as critical as any of today’s pundits. The only difference was there was no one to counter his point of view so it was just a soliloquy.

there’s also no requirement for impartiality in sports coverage. It’s not important enough and if there were the panel during the Olympics are the worst offenders!

Anyway, Telegraph reporting Lineker will be back next week so they must’ve thrashed out some kind of compromise / climb down.

I actually enjoy the pundits when they see or explain stuff I don't see or when Roy Keane is having a rant!. FWIW Lineker et al are/were a better show than Keys/Gray and I hope that they are back soon .
All Andy Gray had to offer was to moan about the referee which is something any bloke down the pub can do.

Got to love all the shy tories getting a chance to give motd a kick because it doesn’t occasionally bow to their down low right wing tendencies.

Braced and ready. Before this issue I didn't think Lineker's ego could have got any bigger but I'm sure it now has.
He's now bigger than the BBC. He's now bigger than the Conservative Party.
Weren't there loads of posts on the forum a couple of years ago about what an unpleasant guy he was away from the public gaze ?

I have to be careful what I say due to Mods posting about slander, but about 20 years ago I was told by someone in the celeb press about his behaviour towards women was at a level that would get him banned from all broadcasting in the modern climate.

It was inferred that he traded secrets about other players in return for the red tops acquiescence .

Chris Wood has been playing football in in England for the past 14 years, yet the MOTD commentator on the Forest v L*t*n game last night insisted on calling him Chris Woods throughout. Idiot. Oh for the days of proper, proficient football commentators.

An open secret as he was said to have played a different "access" card with every single tabloid - different hacks got different teams whilst one got management. And the hacks were also used to 'shut-down' (by coercion or cold hard cash) any women how camp with a kiss'n'tell story. ISTR a broadsheet was in his little black book after he knocked-up a clinician.

Won't see the likes of Motson, Hansen and Brooking again. Tony Gubba(sp?) and Martin Tyler are passable at best. Des Lyn was a great host of MotD in the 1990s. Got straight to the football and where there was analysis - it was well spoken and good quality.
