It’s woke to shut down someone’s freedom of speech based on your own inference of their words or because you don’t like them. It’s woke that is.

To be equally pedantic, he mentioned “1930s Germany” so without using the word “Nazi” he was actually comparing to Nazi Germany.

Erm.. In 1930s Germany (among other things) political parties that opposed the national socialists were banned and anyone suspected of being a political opponent was rounded up and shot; jews were put into concentration camps; books written by jews, lefties or pacifists were burned...etc etc etc... do you think the language used to outline Britian's immigration policy is similar to the rhetoric coming out of Germany in the 1930s?

  4. a19tgg

I think the language is, very much so yes.

I have no wish to shut him or anyone else down. The reason he's being taken off the screens is because he has broken the terms of his employment contract. Nothing else

From what I gather, the unhappiness at Lineker's treatment extended well beyond the on-air 'talent'. MOTD is an incredibly resource-heavy programme. Editing multiple 90-minute matches into those packages quickly is not easy. I guess they just didn't have the staff to produce the usual programme. Not ruling out the possibility that BBC Sport decided to make a point by producing only what was contractually required and leaving it at that, though.

Well you choose to mix up language with rhetoric, which is probably why you find it highly offensive if you’ve not misunderstood what he actually said.

My point is you saying if Sky binned off the pundits they could could reduce their subs to the level of the licence fee is complete nonsense because of the astronomical tv rights.

  15. EnjoytheGame

    EnjoytheGame Reservist

Yeah, fair point. However, after spending a vast fortune on the rights Sky still deem a million a year an appropriate salary. By the logic of those who say they’d watch if just A N Random Presenter hosted the football and that Lineker is grossly overpaid there’s no logical reason to pay Neville and co so much either.

But the market has dictated that wages for top level hosts on flagship TV football shows should be in the region of a million quid a year. The BBC is simply operating within the range determined by the market.

Or they’ll just ask Alan Sugar how he got away with it.

I doubt that Sugar has a contract with the BBC. His deal will be with the companies that produce and distribute the Apprentice I'd imagine

Absolutely laughable. Can't stand these clubs that chop and change managers all the time. Show some loyalty for goodness sake!

Mr IBB is convinced that this is the year that they are relegated.

However he's said that for the last ten seasons!

    Pint of wine anyone?

I’m always loath to criticise other clubs sacking managers, plus I know their recent record isn’t great, but he’s got Rogers, Moyes and Lopetegui below him. You’ve got Fulham, Brighton and Brentford doing really well, but outside of that it isn’t an easy League is it, and a lot of clubs their size are struggling and in and around the bottom half as a matter of course, that’s just the nature of that league. 12 fairly similar sized teams at the bottom. He’s not pulled up trees and they have spent money, but they needed to as they had a very old squad with about half being out of contract at the same time.

I think it’s just panic really - much like our change. Palace haven’t won at all in 2023 and so they are the mid-table team being “pulled into it” from a seemingly safe position by a poor run of form. All the teams below them are getting the odd win here and there but they’re not and, if they don’t, it won’t be long before they’re in the bottom three. Having not been in a relegation fight for a while, they might also not be as well equipped to survive as some others, so they’re going for the famed “new manager bounce” before it’s too late.

It does seem a bit like January sales moving to November nowdays, once one does it everyone has to do it. Leeds, Everton and Southampton have pulled the trigger so now other teams above them feel the need to do it as well to stay ahead.

Palace are struggling for goals but they're far from the only one.

Amazing to think that Brighton and Brentford have scored around double the number of goals that "big" clubs Wolves, Forest, Everton, West Ham and Southampton have (even Chelsea aren't doing much better). At Brentford it's obviously because of Toney (though still surprising because he wasn't that prolific last season and they don't have Erikssen) but at Brighton the goals are more evenly shared - what has made the difference in their attack, because up until recently they'd always been goal-shy in the Prem (until their closing flourish they'd only scored 29 goals in 33 games last season) and it's not like they've signed anyone really prolific or any of their top scorers were scoring freely before?

Suicidal from Palace. 100% agree with what Kompany said - Palace are overachieving. Hell, they've been in the PL since Kevin Phillips ruined a wonderful season for us.
