I think you've hit the nail on the head here. We were probably a couple of players away from being a really good squad this season - a full back/wing back that could cover either side and another midfielder that isn't terrified of the ball to go alongside Louza when he returned. I don't think anyone would've complained with that.

But instead we've spunked £6m on a reserve keeper and £5m on our back up striker. It's just baffling. We're only trying to compete in the Championship, the players we needed to bring in don't need to be world beaters. £11m gets you 2-3 up and coming players from League 1.

With a 6 year old and 4 year old who love football, I’ve done my best to raise them right by making sure they support Watford.

This has now become a serious challenge and today they asked me for a Tottenham shirt (my dad is a Spurs fan). When I asked why, their response was “because Watford are duff and never win, they are so bad.” I had nothing to argue with. This may seem comical, but I was literally lost for words, my boys are 100% correct. We are duff, we don’t win and we are so bad. The glory days of players giving a crap about this club are long gone. The club I fell in love with over 35 years ago is so far gone from that moment that made me watch Watford in awe and dream of one day playing for them.

Your 4 year old describes things as 'duff'? I think you may have raised a 60 year old man.

In terms of my little one, Harry the Hornet is currently doing all the heavy lifting when it comes to her interest in the club.

The sad thing is that the garden isn't exactly rosy at Spuds...and yet they're many orders of magnitude less chaotic than us

Good team, nice ground and a world class striker but just don’t win anything.

And like ours their rivals might achieve something very unlikely this season.

At the very least, it does seem after today's shocker, some of our more "die hard" fans who sit on their hands each week are starting to realise how bad things are getting. Not talking about the idiots who start fights and run onto the pitch, but the very fact you could even hear audio Boo's from the away end even on Hive Live was progress. Fans' can never change how a club is run. Half of Watford could turn up at LC tomorrow and demand Gino answers for where he has/is taking us. What would he do? Shut the blinds probably. On average, we sell over 75% of our home tickets each match (not sure that figure is acruate but it's the only site I found) but it's mind boggling to think just how long as a fanbase, we have put up with this dross of a squad and ownership.

I remember when I was younger I went to Hillsbrough, the away end was packed, we were about two points above the relegation zone starting (what was then) Nationwide Division One in the face with less than ten games to play. They scored, we equalised, then they got a very late winner which pushed us even closer to the trap door. A few of us stayed after the final whistle and clapped the players' for their effort. On the train home back to Hertfordshire I was crying as I was so scared we were going to get relegated. I cared about the club, I knew it was going to hurt if we had gone down. I clutched my match programme as tightly as I could and just kept looking at the club crest hoping we would be alright.

I hardly feel as connected to the club now as I did back then. Sure, we have had bad times since and a lot of good times in the many seasons that have followed those events. But right now? Where we are as a club on the whole? We are a million miles from what we were even back then. That, to me, is the hardest part to accept.

It’s because I say it all the time while watching watching Watford.

I can’t even sell them on Harry the Hornet as we live in the States. They see mascots at every game.

Good post and one that certainly chimes with me. Anyone who has followed Watford in pre-Pozzo times will remember supporting a very limited team, but one with players committed to playing for the club and not mercenaries who will move on when it suits them. It was much easier to feel a connection with those teams, even though they were supposedly ‘not as good’.

At least be a good father and encourage them to follow someone other than spuds, as they’re pretty duff too.
Even though city are cheating horrible ***** they’re a pleasure to watch. My lad thinks the same about Watford as your kids he just follows to keep me happy and also keeps his belly full with a roof over his head but he seems to be on the latest bandwagon of following certain players, which makes it a bit easier.

The fan zone at that church opposite the ground is very much the highlight of March days for us.

Once we've spent 15 enjoyable minutes in there, we've made the trip worthwhile, so leaving a turgid game at half time isn't nearly so difficult

I dont know about Arsenal doing something unlikely, they backed Arteta, brought in talented youth, relied on their academy and sprinkled some experience in also. They had a plan, stuck to it and now you can see the fruits of their labours. Most of this squad will be around for a few seasons also. Who would of thought that if you have a plan, stick to it and back a young talented manager things would work out well.

As for those up the road they have had a similiar plan plus the club is fan owned, I dont know how this works on a board level and who ultimately makes the decisions but it looks like a blueprint I would love us to follow. Sadly Gino has put us in so much debt I doubt our fans could afford to buy the club. I hate to admit it but I am a tad jealous of what they have going on, fml.

Or do what I have done and vow to give them no more, at least until the club is rid of the Pozzos.

We aren’t Arsenal. Teams like Arsenal pinch our young prospects. Young players dream of making it at Arsenal. They dream of getting on board at Watford so they can join a club like Arsenal.

Most importantly they let a young manager make mistakes and learn on the job, that is the ultimate key to their success right now. It’s something Luton are also benefiting from too.

Yeah I guess I mean they benefited from any mistakes he made with us, which in the main was him deciding to take the job in the first place.

Not really comparing like with like, the worst we've been in that time was lower Championship, whereas their previous owners left them in so much **** they fell into non-league

I got pillared on Social media for saying similar to this, that the teams in the 90s and 00s were far more committed to Watford than anything Pozzo as brought in (accepting there are a few there that clearly care)

I'm crossing the floor, this club is now irredeemable under this owner. No interest in supporting them till something changes.

Managers don't care and who can blame them? This transmits to players who don't care and who can blame them?

So why should the fans care?

Although I generally agree that there were more players who you could feel a connection with I also think this is rise tinted glasses to a certain extent , I can think of a number of transient players we signed who it would have been very hard to conduct with . It was also a very different time in football generally and I’m not sure we will ever have that again either with or without Pozzo.
