Went to my first away game since pre covid with a mate who doesn’t support Watford today and I was shocked by it. The worst thing of all was the 3 boys who looked no older than 19 Monkey chanting at Jamal Lowe when he was on the floor near us. I’ve never seen anything like that at a Watford game and it was a disgrace. On top of that they were offering out their own fans for not getting as angry as they were.

The amount of Coked up Stone Island wearing idiots was staggering. I’ve not seen so much pent up anger in one place for a long time. Multiple fans fighting among themselves, some more interested in abusing the home fans and generally very little actual support for the team. I get that we’re not much fun to support at the moment, but it doesn’t excuse that behaviour.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? I’ve always enjoyed away trips in the past, but I won’t be doing anymore for a while. Haven’t felt so embarrassed to be a Watford fan in my life, but my mate was also shocked by it.

My first away game this season today and it wasn’t pleasant at all

Flares let off on the narrow concourse pre game and thrown onto the pitch at full time. Open use of cocaine in pubs before the game and again within the ground + the general horrible behaviour of groups of teenagers acting out the role of ‘hooligans’ all day long.

As I mentioned in the match thread as well, the day even ended with a physical fight at Willesden Junction which could very easily have cost a young lad his life- - not exaggerating either, he was knocked out cold and his head bounced off the concrete on the way down

Stewarding in the upper tier was inadequate. Many fans turned up shortly before kick-off and stood where they liked. A female steward near me made a couple of half-hearted attempts to keep them out of the stairways but to little effect.

I go to a handful every season but wasn’t there today. Most of what you say though (minus the monkey chants) reflects what I saw at Sheffield Utd a fortnight ago. We seem to have a couple of hundred children cosplaying as Green Street extras. It’s proper cringe. There seems to be no attempts by anyone in the game to stop the drugs thing too. Stop searching kids and normals because it’s easy and give these whoppers in Stone Island fancy dress the attention they’re asking for instead.

And please consider reporting the racists, even if you just give the club the seat numbers and a rough time it happened. I’m sure QPR will have CCTV.

Sadly something that is happening with alot of clubs followings away from home. Have mates who support different clubs who have witnessed similar things happening at their away games.

Yep, I plan on reporting it. Not sure it’ll come to much but annoyed that I didn’t say anything at the time. By the time we’d realised what they were doing they’d stopped.

When did this faux hooliganism start to become prominent again?

Does seem to be a real cocaine problem. On the train home to Euston last week we saw a Preston fan on the platform sniff it from the back of his hand in full view of everyone on the platform. Not just a football issue either…

I won’t be bothering with any more away games after today. I quite like a curry and a few beers away from home, but we unfortunately have a huge collection of **** following us.

I actually quite hope the Luton lot beat a few of these kids up to be honest, you need your first slap to realise you’re not invincible sometimes. Probably privately educated spoilt kids cosplaying as hooligans.

It was grim today, really horrible. Upper tier was full of arseholes more interested in drugs and a scrap than the game. Familiar faces seem to have been replaced with a bunch of wannabe hooligans.

As if the team and owner being terrible weren’t bad enough it’s now the fan base turning rotten.

The Athletic felt motivated enough to do a special report on it almost 18 months ago now - doesn't sound like it's got anything other than worse in the meantime.

First time I noticed it was West Ham away last season as I had the misfortune to be stood next to all these floppy haired ****s vaping away all game, then had a run in with some knobhead who thought the 20 minute queue for a beer didn't apply to him as he was off his ****.

This behaviour continued until we were all filing back towards the station and they said something to a couple of middle aged West Ham fans who motioned as though they were going to climb over the barrier and then they all shut up.

Quite aside from the fact that they are tedious and all dress the same, what is it with this ridiculous hairstyle they all have? Couldn't look less intimidating if they tried, like an introspective indie band from the mid 90s.

Come on are you honestly saying that drugs are the problem? It's frankly everywhere and has been from the late 80's early 90,'s. I've lived it, seen it in every walk of life. If you have a problem report it otherwise shut up. People on here sicken me with their consent fookin moaning. If you don't like it do something about it instead of fookin winging on a forum. Man up and make a difference.

I do like the idea of moaning on a forum about people moaning on a forum. I'm trying hard not to moan about someone moaning about people moaning on a forum but it's tough.

Went in to a couple of pubs yesterday pre match and saw no issues in either. Was fairly late into the ground, stood in the Upper Tier at the back on the left and saw no isses at all. I could even see my sons group of 17 year olds who were having a good time but not in any way annoying anybody, so they're not all to**ers.
Afterwards we walked past the home ends with all the home fans streaming out and again no problems.

Apparently my sons group got threatened on the way back to the station by some home fans but kept walking, That's about all I can add to the thread.

I text a mate very similar. I did Reading away which was my first away game since pandemic and it felt different.

Yesterday was everything you said. Although no real bother round me, a few were clearly on something and totally gone. Horrible atmosphere, concourse at Half time had a couple of watford lads trying to batter each other.

Like many, used to like an away day for a few drinks and a curry on way home. Regardless of the performance (which is up there with one of the worst I have seen in 30 odd years) I will need a bloody good reason to go away again under this current regime and atmosphere.

Shane really as its just ugly on and off the pitch.

I just wish some of this anger could be directed at the owners!

I’m going to complain to the club - the drugged up pretend Danny dyers should be banned for life and forced to look at where their lives have gone wrong.

    Fighting at football is pathetic.

I've been to a number of Away games over the past couple of years and we do seem to have a little group of idiots who actually ruin what is generally a very good atmosphere, but it depends in how close proximity you are to them. The whole prevelance of gear is on the rise but that's purely due to how accessible it is now in comparison to years back - I've no issues with people doing it and in honesty would be a hypocritical of me to chastise I just wish people knew there limits better.

Back to our fans, I think there is an odd air of invincibility amongst this small group, which is empowered by the police presence at most games regardless. As another poster has said I do think it could be an eye opener for them if they actually got caught up in any trouble

I've been to most away games this year and previous years and I don't think anything has changed. What was different yesterday/Sheff Utd away to Crewe away in Div 4, Scarborough away in cup etc, possibly drugs more than serious boozing back then? It's football culture, not saying it's right but it's always been this way. Who was at Blackpool away for the 1-1 in in 2007 when we got into the playoffs, anything different to yesterday?

People are deluded if they think Watford are a family club, we are no different to most other clubs in this country.

Is it possible that those posting on here are just getting a bit older and seeing young (ish) lads acting like lads do is less easy to tolerate?

Seemed well toxic there at the end, even our own fans singing you’re getting sacked in the morning, and levels of booing normally found in the shoutbox

I'd disagree with you on that. I've been at most away games this season and there is a big difference to previous seasons, the drinking culture has definitely changed to a cocaine culture. I was on a lads weekend away up until yesterday with mates who support Coventry, Charlton and Birmingham and they all say the same thing about their away following.

I was sat with one of our players parents at Sheff Utd recently and the mum asked me quite genuinely - "are Watford away ends always this vile?".

Been like this for a while now. And the increasing drug use is everywhere at games, not just Watford.

I was fortunate enough to go the Euros at Wembley for the semis and final and it was quite unbelievable how fans were doing it in full view of police, children etc.

The idea that this is new or recently reformed is rubbish, it's just being exacerbated by how depressing things have been around the club after years of relative success.

I remember losing 4-1 away at Leicester pre Pozzos and a contingent got kicked out for fighting with Stewards. I still see that group at every away game I attend acting the same way 15 years later. We have always had that element at our away games.

I am no way defending hooliganism btw, I hate to see coked up lads at the game just as much. It's just touched a nerve that it's being paraded as a new phenomenon.

  33. Burnsy

I don't think anyone is saying it's a new phenomenon. They are saying it's on the rise again and being done in a far more brazen fashion. And it should be dealt with rather than accepted as the norm just because it's always been there in the background.

  34. ForzaWatford

Yep, agreed. There has always been a small faction but it seemed a lot more brazen on Saturday than it has previously.
