    Hello all,

I’m posting this to whet your appetites (or maybe 5 people’s appetite) and also make sure I commit to what I am about to do.

Last season @Hornet77 did the most amazing job (and best ever) of keeping us to date with all the stats.

Sadly most of the posts depressed -but if it had been anything else then they would have been a charlatan.

I’ve noticed they said they couldn’t do the stats this season. I would be more than happy to provide the forum with stats. And unless there are any complaints will do so very soon (ie less than one week).

I won’t quite go to the extremes of @Hornet77 with player stats, but will do points and goals scored/conceded. I’ll obviously throw in some good looking but probably not needed graphs/charts.

Again … thank you to @Hornet77 for last season, I’m not sure how you persisted with drudgery that was on offer

    Hello all,

Here is a brief update. I haven’t finished all of the formatting etc. as I’m about to go on holiday and have run out of time – so I’m just throwing these up there in an unfinished format:

Graph 1 – Points each season we’ve been promoted to the PL per game (up to 5 games)

    dotted line = via play-offs

Graph 2 – Points each season we’ve been promoted to the PL per game (full season)

Info Sheet – League position stats

NB I could only find the last 2 championships online, so if anyone has a place I could fid league positions for older seasons that would be very useful

Interestingly we’ve already conceded less goals than we did the WHOLE of last season.

    Rock solid.

Was there a stats thread for the 2020/21 season? If there was, I don’t recall anything about it.

It’s funny that not many people remember that season with much fondness despite a fair few records being broken.

To get the league table of your choice go to 11v11.com/league-tables/ . You can enter the any date and get the league table at that date.
For example, put in 23 October 1948 Division 3 South and you will get:

I chose a random date. Not a good one. Sorry!

Can someone confirm if we win this Saturday it’s our best Championship start ever or best start ever ever ever ?

EDIT or none of the above , need to look this up

Just done a bit of research and the only second tier season that would beat our start (if we win on Saturday ) would be 2007/2008 after being relegated from EPL where we won 5 out of first 6 games under Boothroyd .

In 2014/15 we accrued 12 points from 6 games with 4 wins and 2 losses .

Unlees of course there is some outlier season where we started off brilliantly but ended atrociously .

That would be 2000/01 under GT. We started with 5 wins, 1 draw (5 wins and a defeat in 07/08) and in fact reached 12 wins and 3 draws for an insane 39 points from the first 15 games before crashing and burning to miss out even on the playoffs. :(

After 10 games that season we had won 9 and drawn 1. We were still second as Fulham had won all their 10 games.

The dreadful Sheffield Wednesday home game was the catalyst. The defence wasn't upgraded. Despite being second and unbeaten the atmosphere was rubbish and we got outplayed and never really got our groove back.

Hoping no history repeats on Saturday.

and then we played West Brom at home…..

I don’t think anyone has got to the bottom of what went wrong that season, apart from maybe GT and the players. Could it be that we recovered our good form from 1998/99 towards the end of 1999/00, only to be eventually found out? IIRC we only picked up one point against the top teams (the chaotic 3-3 against WBA) after the unbeaten run, but we did put on the odd really good performance (Norwich and Forest at home, Gillingham) while dropping countless points to struggling sides, so the potential to reach the top 6 was still there.

There was a theory at the time that the team, who hadn't been playing brilliantly despite the results, were spooked by being easily beaten by Man U's reserves in the League Cup then panicked and fell apart. The first of the string of defeats was a week later.

    Hello all,

Sorry for the lack of updates. A mixture of a very busy personal/work life when we picked up wins, and not too much motivation with some of the other results. That makes me sound like one of our players... I even picked up an injury and had to go to A&E after getting back late after the Norwich game after walking into a kitchen cupboard (true story).

Given the classic win which sadly I couldn't make here are some positive points:
    • We aren't too far off (3 pts x once, 4 pts x twice) 3 of our five successful seasons to get promotion. In other words we aren't cut adrift.
    • The win against L**** is the the only time in the last three seasons in the Championship where we have won in game week 16
    • The defeat against Swansea is a good sign. We have never won in game week 13 and been promoted to the top flight. We are an enigma... we turn our bad luck to luck in the most unlucky game fixture of the season.
    • Moving from 15th to 10th place after the win was our biggest increase in places in one game this season

Perhaps putting a more sober head on here on the challenging statistically:
    • The last 3 positive points in the above post were very weak!!! But we deserve one week of twisting stats
    • Looking at the second chart - we do need to go on a really good run of wins to get promoted. We need to use this as a springboard
    • We have never been promoted with this few points after 16 games.
    • The second chart is showing a worrying downward trend on the whole on our positions. We need to kick start a run to lose the pace.
    • We still haven't won two games in a row. And have won just 6 times in 16 games.
Perhaps that last point is a positive? We are still only 3 points off the play offs and 7 off the autos (no - I'm not suggesting we can achieve that - I would be stunned!). Despite a bad start... no one else is taking the bull by the horns.

The question is will we kick on and make the most of some of our amazing players? Or will we keep on plodding on and allowing teams that show endeavor to beat us? Its pretty interesting poised I guess.

I did start working on a chart showing the sentient feelings of the forum of "Pozzo in" vs "Pozzo out" since their takeover. It makes for interesting reading. But on balance I thought that in the worst case it would cause various members of the forum to plan in person fights at the next home game. The best case is this would occur on Only Fans rather than at The Vic. As such I will keep this chart to myself for now.

    • In our two Pozzo auto promotion seasons, after 20 games we were in the same or lower position than we are now.
    • In those seasons, we did not drop out of the play off spots at any time in the second half of the season.
    • 5 draws in the first 10 games - 0 draws in the second 10 games.
    • Our final 3 opponents of the first half of the season are currently in, 20th / 19th / 24th places respectively.
    • We have been runners-up in the 2nd tier 3 times in our history! Surely our turn for the top spot......

As we have now played every team either home or away, if you make these assumptions:

We lost the home game so we will lose the away game
We drew the home game so we will lose the away game
We won the home game so we will draw the away game
We lost the away game so we will draw the home game
We drew the away game so we will win the home game
We won the away game so we will win the home game

You arrive at 36 points for the second half, giving a total of 73 points for the season

Only once in the last 8 seasons has a team made the play-offs with 73 or fewer points.

You assume we won’t win anymore away games, unlikely!, my take is we will have a better second half than first, which will leave us in the top four! Bilic has won 7 out of his first 13 games which is pretty impressive.
Taken 23 out of 39 points which would give us another 40 points if we keep it up.

“We won the home game so we will draw the away game”. I take particular issue with this one. Say we have comprehensively beaten a team 4-0 at home (I can’t think who!), then surely we would also expect to beat them away? In general your logic only really is valid if all the games and score lines are extremely close.

This isn't really a prediction, just an estimation based on a set of known facts. I sincerely hope we can outperform 73 points. Just about to order tickets for Swansea (A), so hope the logic doesn't apply to that fiixture!

Check out Teides scores competition to analyse how close we are at predicting correct results, or, the miracle of correct scores.
    Generally, abysmally poor.
    Logic out the window.
Who the hell knows what will happen at the Dog Kennel after we thrashed the trash 4-0 at home?
Will we succumb to Millwalls long ball game again on Boxing Day after they trashed us at theirs ?
This is what makes it all so exciting/emotional/fascinating frustrating.
