F*ck Qatar and f*ck Fifa. A situation so ridiculous that it'd be funny were it not the direct cause of thousands of deaths.

Plenty of political and social reasons not to bother following England this time around. But the biggest reason is they are as dull as dish water under Southgate and now **** too.

Best thing about the world cup this time around is that it gives our injury ravaged squad a break.

Argentina certainly had a terrible regime in place at the time of the tournament but they were awarded it many years before the junta came to power. Apart from that, they were at least a major football nation and worthy hosts. More recently, FIFA’s drive to take the World Cup to emerging football nations like Japan, Korea, USA etc., is legitimate but Qatar was a ridiculous choice. There will be no legacy after the circus has left and they will never have any standing in world football in the future.

It would be nice if the Qatari team ends up being absolutely humiliated in every game, but I won’t wish for that as they’d probably all end up with their heads removed from their shoulders or being stoned to death.

I’ll watch it because I’m a sell-out, but I’m expecting everything to feel a bit hollow. I usually watch just about every minute of a World Cup, and get sucked in by the festival of football, but without proper fans there and everything else associated with this tournament, it feels like the ultimate bastardisation of the game.

Expecting an absolute humdinger while the principaled bods turn their backs on a succession of 4-3 classics. Absurd choice from FIFA. Indefensible but what is new.

    Can’t wait!

Russia has had a terrible record on human rights for years. If we only award the World Cup to countries that meet our idea of morales, it may narrow the field down considerably. I’m not agreeing with the WC being awarded to Qatar, it’s bizarre and no doubt corrupt. I also can’t find one reliable media source of the 6,500 to confirm whether that is directly linked to building stadiums or migrants that have died from other causes. Let’s also recognise we aren’t perfect, some of the stories around how we are treating migrants currently isn’t exactly perfect. We also participated in an unnecessary war in Iraq not that long ago, where 200k civilians were killed. No country is perfect.

They had already had the Olympics two years earlier. Still, reconciliation is obviously overrated and welcoming Germany back into the community of democratic nations has clearly not worked.

Precisely. If you never award a country a World Cup because of things it got horribly wrong, you won’t have a WC.

They had to build 12 football stadiums from scratch, as well as new hotels to house people and all the associated infrastructure, so I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to imagine they probably had a lot of migrant workers working on those protects, and the vast majority of that 6500 would’ve come over to do just that. If not by migrant workers, how do you think 12 football stadiums were built, did they use magic?

Also, if not based on morals, how about we just don’t award the World Cup to the country that pays the most in bribes but rather the highest quality bid? And also one where it isn’t 50 degrees in summer? That would be a start, before we even need to get onto morals.

I was simply responding to your strange definition of 1974 being "not that long after WW2".

Yep don’t disagree that Qatar shouldn’t have been awarded the World Cup. But I’m still going to watch and enjoy it. China have an appallingly record on human rights, I don’t see anyone refusing to buy Chinese goods in protest, or refusing to go on holiday to Dubai who use slave labour to build hotels.

I have a feeling that FIFA saw/sees itself as on some sort of mission to make the world a better place. Other than a healthier bank account balance, I suspect Blatter actually felt that by awarding Qatar the world cup, it would become a wonderful free libertarian democracy during the tournament. I suspect China, North Korea and Venezuela were probably the next 3 choices on his list.

I know this is satire, but watch the documentary, he wanted the USA to get the 2022 World Cup but all the FIFA execs went against him because they’d taken bribes from Qatar.

I think what grates with a lot of people about this World Cup (myself included) is the hypocrisy of Southgate and the England team who spend so much time preaching about LGBQT and Black Lives Matter but are quite prepared to take part in an event where bum-banditry is illegal and 6500 black lives have been lost building the stadiums. They will walk off the field is one of them is racially abused by the crowd but have no qualms about lining up against Iran - where women are beaten to death for not having their headscarf on straight.

Disappointed with Gary Lineker for this reason. He’s talked the talk for a long time and when the opportunity came along for him to stand up and boycott something he’s instead come up with a somewhat mealy mouthed position of ‘I’m reporting it, not supporting it’

So Gary, you’re reporting it to people who by watching it are supporting it but at the same time want them to know that they’re wrong to do so but it’s fine for you to fly there for a month, earn loads of money from it and spread the word to millions of people. Wind your ******* neck in mate.

I agree it's good when an individual makes a principled stand, for example when Colin Murray walked out of Talk Sport when it was purchased by Murdoch, but the far greater impact would be made when it's done by an organisation or nation. England, or better still UEFA as a bloc, pulling out of the World Cup would have sent the required message.

Yes but the Germany of 1974 was very different from the 1945 version. Germany is one country that's genuinely repented - unlike Austria.

I agree that the Olympics and World Cup etc should not be awarded to nasty human rights abusing countries, but even if we accept the argument that sport brings people together and that politics should be left out of it, there were good sporting reasons not to award the Olympics or the Euros to Russia (already proven drug cheats) or the World Cup to Qatar.

The original Qatari bid claimed that the tournament could be held in the summer because the stadia would be air-conditioned (carbon neutrally no doubt). Once they said it would have to be switched to the autumn, there should have been another vote. Presumably enough beneficiaries of the bribes were still in post to prevent that.

So pretty inconclusive despite the headlines. 2m migrant workers over the last 10 years, of which c.6500 have died. Given the migrants are from poor countries, it is not clear how may would have died anyway. I am not suggesting there isn’t a problem, but these type of articles leave me with the suspicion that we don’t know the scale of the issue and western media are filling in the blanks

The pattern is clear. There has been credible reporting on it for years and it's well established what has been going on over there.

But whatever it takes to enjoy watching a game of football, I suppose.
