Well, it is obviously a more rugby city than most, but that is true, for example Brighton are no bigger a team than us, maybe even smaller, but through being a stable Prem club, they are able to get 30k through the gates regularly
Charles "Charlie" Charles and Alfie Noakes ran riot that day if I recall. Which was all the more impressive because they had both died at The Somme walking into a wall of German machine gun fire just 15 years prior.
The first Watford match I ever went to was a 0-1 loss and the second was a 1-1 draw. This run of results must be the closest we have got to 2 consecutive wins in the last 30 years, being just 2 and 1 goals out respectively.
Those sound suspiciously like my first two Watford games as well (if you’re from the same era as me). Against L*t*n and Sunderland perchance?
Brighton are a good comparison, in fact their history is inferior to Bristol's (it wasn't that long ago that just surviving in the Championship would be seen as an achievement), and both of them had a four-year stint in the top flight during the 70s/80s before going into massive decline, so it makes you think if Brighton can do it why not Bristol? Ashton Gate is 27k compared to the Amex's 31.8k, not a massive difference.
Would be great for them to sign off part 1 of this season with a definite victory and not a huge question mark.
My first two Watford games were two consecutive 3-2 defeats. The good part was that H scored in both of them, the bad part was that the second in a big game at a relegation rival sent us bottom (I think many can work out the season and opponents from that!).
Liverpool and Bradford 2000. Valley Parade is the only ground we've played at and never won, following breaking our duck at Goodison last year.
My first 2 were two 2-1 home wins. Div 4 1977 vs Darlington & Bournemouth, 2 clubs with very different status today.
Funny to think that that same season we broke our duck at Anfield yet only picked up two other away points, at Sheff Wednesday who went down with us and Middlesborough (who had a poor home record under Bryan Robson) in the last away game. You'd think after winning at Liverpool we could pick up points at almost anywhere, but it's bizarre the way football sometimes unfolds in reality - who'd have thought after the big win against Man Utd last season we'd go on to lose 11 on the trot at home?
My first three were all 0-0... followed by a 4-3 win over the mighty Harlow. Sort of followed that pattern ever since. For what it's worth I've lived in Brizzle for 35 years and have many sh**ty season ticket holding mates, so it's got a fair bit of pride resting on it for me. 2-0 City
My first game was in Div 4 1977 also vs Darlington, and it was 1-1 (last game of that season). Eddie Rowles (o.g) with the late equaliser for the Horns. Legend
That can’t be right. HB1 reliably tells us Pearson masterminded Leicester winning the PL and that chancer Ranieri rode his coattails. City are lucky to have such a luminary in charge.
Have we we ever won 2 games in a row before the bloke on Fantasy Football came to prominence in the 90’s? I’d hope so but don’t quote me.
Are they a good comparison? Bristol have a second football club, a rugby club - and cricket/football/rugby clubs within relative spitting distance. Brighton is pretty stand alone in comparison.
I look forward to the time when Bournemouth are back in Div 4 and Darlington are bossing it mid table in the prem .
