I'm just not as hyped for this WC as I would be generally. Yes, we played really well in the Euro's and almost won it, but leading up to this one has been nothing but bad news, rumors of FIFA bribing Qatar officals, blackmail and workers getting paid about one pound an hour to build the stadiums. Qatar have never qualified for a major event like this, and I know that matters little, but we've known for the last 12 years this was going to happen. On top of all this, they have some very, very strict rules about behaviour, women gender ethnics and LBGTQ+ groups. Also I read it's very expensive to drink there. I don't know, all the behind the scenes buggery has sort of spoilt my interest in it. Not sure if anyone else feels the same?

Not really interested this year, too much death and poor conditions around the venue builds...

Usually with the tournament in the summer it fills a football fix between the natural break between seasons, even if the wife asks, "Do you have to watch Cameroon v Costa Rica?", "Of course!"

But this one shoehorned mid-season, particularly as we are building up a bit of momentum is an unnecessary distraction (although it may help with our injury list) and that's not overlooking the fact it's held in a country with questionable human rights and no football history.

I can't help but keep thinking how awful it would be if this was the tournament where England finally win it.

Wasn't that excited but now I've realised that I've only got 5 days of work left until January so that's a nice bonus. Doesn't make up for all the people killed for it though.

Much like the Olympics in 2012, everyone appears indifferent or not bothered about this World Cup. I've commented myself that it's a complete joke for various reasons.

But once it starts, (exactly as in 2012), we won't be able to get enough of it, I give you my word.

Mainly pretty predictable with some in form players being selected and of course those who have been injured !

Toney probably missed out due to his off field issues that have cropped up .

All to lose in the last 8 or something .

Certainly the timing of the tournament and location of it has dampened the excitement usually felt leading up to a tournament.

The Fifa doc on Netflix is worth a watch just in case you’ve forgotten just how absurd it was that they gave it to Qatar. That said, the Doc also highlights corruption has been going in within Fifa since the 70s, and there aren’t many world cups that didn’t have bribery and corruption surrounding the eventual host country. Qatar is just the pinnacle as it’s just so absurd, it’s even the point Blatter realised it had gone too far.

I dont mind the time of year the tournament is in, it gives countries from that area of the world a chance to host I suppose which is only right and fair. As for Qatar hosting it, the thousands of dead minimum wage slaves and the backward dogma of religious states etc the shine has been totally removed. So much of the infrastructure is going to be removed or not really be needed afterwards also. Looking forward to Euro 24 already.

As for watching the games, I dont know to be honest, I will watch England but beyond that I dont know.

Plenty of pro Qatar shills and bots online at the moment trying to sway the narrative as this is what the cabal do these days.

I'm not that fussed about the fuss. Sorry. I'll probably watch some of the football, laugh at the absurdity of it being in Qatar and in November/December and then forget about it completely by Boxing Day.

Not really that interested. I care far more about Watford matches than England matches. I'd rather Watford won the League cup than England won the WC, though the latter is far more likely. Will probably watch the England games or rather have the game on in the background whilst doing something else. "Dier passes to Phillips, Phillips to Maguire, Maguire to Walker, Back to Pickford, before a long punt upfield looking for the head of Kane".

Exactly my feeling. I won't go to Qatar on principle and I won't buy any merch - mind you, I haven't done either of these previously. I'll watch the matches, moan all the time, and hope it goes pear-shaped for FIFA and the Qateris. I'll also hope England win.

Loads of wrong uns have hosted the world cup, not sure why Qatar is being singled out (apart from their brown skin and religious beliefs obvs), but I couldn't care less about the politics, just so long as Senegal reach the final, as I have a very tasty bet riding on that.

Couldn't give as shyte about ingurlund mind.

    Russia's hosting was roundly criticized.

It also invaded Crimea after the World Cup had been awarded to it, so it would be churlish to criticise FIFA for not seeing the future (not to mention there are SO many other things to criticise FIFA for).

There were also widespread boycotts/calls for boycotts of the event.

Qatar is far worse because their abysmal human rights record was known ahead of time, and then they proceeded to get their infrastructure for the actual event ready by walking over the corpses of thousands of foreign workers brought in under conditions that were virtually indistinguishable to slavery, with the recent figure of 6,500 dead thought to be an enormous undercount.

I appreciate that accidents can happen, but if a hosting nation has 6,500+ dead foreign workers that's not an accident. It's a clear pattern of abuse and unsafe working conditions. I just can't get on board with accepting that.

Way before my time, but apparently in the Fifa doc awarding it to Argentina in 78 was as bad if not worse than anything else since, due to the fascist dictatorship in control at the time. There was a lot of pressure to pull it from there, which Fifa resisted.

Probably some older forumites (or just more intelligent people than me with a better grasp of history) might remember more about it?

Can't get the least bit excited about the World Cup... unlike the T20 cricket. I was mesmerised by England today - can't remember the last time the football team generated that feeling

I think this is it for me, I’d normally be so excited for a World Cup, but it just seems all wrong. The time of year and the fact the normal season is just a stopping temporarily.
