Yet again more joined up thinking from the morons in charge. After having been wiped out they have been reintroduced. But yet again if needs be they can be wiped out. Because using brute force is so much simpler than working in harmony with nature.

Farmers in England to be allowed to use ‘lethal force’ on beavers (msn.com)

Beavers can be an issue where they are not native as in southern South America having escaped from fur farms (despicable activity) but here they are a positive and a welcome reintroduction.

As usual greed is the driving force killing the planet. And as usual much of the damage is committed to fill the pockets of a few.

Marina developers target pristine bay in Phuket (bangkokjack.com)

If you do go abroad and it is hard given the lies often told by companies in order to appear green try and be as ecologically friendly as possible. How many more cruise ship destinations and ports do we need ?

I quite agree, but I always feel moved to point out that ultimately it’s not the planet that’s being killed, it’s the human race (along with numerous other species).

We are all too selfish as individuals. We are only on this planet for the next 10-50 years and want to enjoy the rest of our lives as much as possible with only a passing thought for later generations to ease our consciences. Recycling bins etc. I love wildlife and travel. Am I going to stop flying around the world over the next 30 years to save the planet ? While others still do ? Nope because I’m selfish. We are going to leave this planet in a terrible state for future generations and aren’t prepared to spoil the rest our lives in reversing that course.
We point the finger at Brazil for chopping down their forests hundreds of years after we chopped ours down. If we want the Amazon to be preserved for the sake of the planet, we need to compensate Brazil. If we pay Brazil, where do we think that cash would end up ??
Sorry a bit off topic but over the next 100 years or so we will make the planet uninhabitable. Then what happens to humans ? But our generations will be ok and just have to put up with a few well known species becoming extinct.

Lovely to see a Great Spot close up. We have some spectacular birds in this country if you keep your eyes open. I assume you must be very close to a wooded area to get one of those?

Shame about the huge decline in the Lesser Spotted in these parts. Common enough when I was growing up. Now hardly seen or heard.

By the way the biggest conservation groups in the UK are preparing to mobilize their members to demonstrate against this Government's lunatic policies on the environment. The world is in a parlous state but yet again these idiots prioritize economic short termism. There won't be any economics worth knowing when the full crisis hits in a few decades time but no bother to these fools.

Yes I've had a few emails from Wildlife Trust,RSPB.
You have to hand it to the government, they've managed to upset almost every section of society in about three weeks!

Disturbing report from WWF about decline in species, especially stark in the Amazon where 90% loss in fifty years.

It's a man made extinction event of unparalleled loss. Yet even now all governments think of with big business (pretending to be green) pulling their strings is how much more money they can make. Money will be worthless in a few decades when the coasts are inundated and agriculture is nigh on impossible.

Has anyone invested in a night vision camera that records nocturnal garden activity? If you have and it actually works, what make/model is it?

This was the equivalent to the camera I bought 6 years ago and that's still going strong. Cheap and cheeful but seems pretty reliable. Great for the little 5 sec videos of foxes badgers deer etc.

Does get through batteries pretty quickly esp over winter but I bought 8 rechargeable batteries and just clear down the photo card and recharge the batteries every Friday.

I’ve had a few cheap trail cams and they have all packed in after about a year. The one I have now is a Browning, which is metal bodied and really sturdy. I took it on a recent holiday and got some top quality badger action.

    Not quite wildlife but…
Sadly, we had to say goodbye to our lovely black and white cat - Todd - today. He was diagnosed with lymphoma ten days ago and, after some tests, it was found to be too far gone for any treatment.
A very popular cat who loved people and made friends with anyone who visited our house, he will be much missed. Even though he had a happy life, he was only 10 years old, so it seems much too soon for him to be gone. I'm in bits.

So sorry to hear WWTW. They are part of the family and as you say 10 years is far too young for a cat. 10 good happy years is better than 20 mediocre years.

    So so sorry WWTW.
My beloved Arthur was killed a year and a half ago and it is still painful.
    He wasn't quite ten.
You gave Todd,a very handsome fellow, his best life and that's all you could have done.
You will never forget him .
I can recommend Ashes for Art ( I think) who made a ring and a memory pebble from little pieces of Arthur's ashes.
    I wear the ring everyday.
Lots of love to you all.

Looks a lovely fella, big shame, sorry to hear that.

We also lost our ten year old cat to lymphoma a couple of years ago. Felt absolutely shocking to all of us.

He did receive some treatment, but gained very little from it and in similar circumstances I wouldn’t pursue it again. You can treat dogs and even if it’s not nice you can give them a biscuit, a cuddle and they are ok with it. Cats just hate it.

That's interesting to hear. We didn't get the chance to choose a chemotherapy option because the disease was well advanced and he wasn't responding well enough to the steroid injections he was given.

Our vet told us that, deep inside, a cat's wild animal instinct would be to mask any problem for as long as possible, so as not to appear vulnerable. We had no idea anything was wrong until three weeks ago when he started eating a bit less and even then we thought it could be a problem with his teeth. So it all seemed to happen very suddenly and makes it more of a shock to us when, in truth, he must have been sick for some while before that.

    It's such a traumatic time.
I've just taken my neighbour Greg and his kitten Tilly for her first jab.
She is a stunning kitten, fifteen weeks old, pure black with yellow eyes. It's a privilege to look after an animal. I treasure every day with Ford and Persephone.
    Of course.
It's Ashes with Art I think.

Also a bit off topic but still nature-related, but I’ve been following the course of the River Colne which is a tributary of the Thames and goes through some really beautiful countryside in and around the M25 area and on the fringes of London, particularly around Buckinghamshire and the London borough of Hillingdon. I was struck by how beautiful some of the Hertfordshire countryside it flows through is, particularly during this time of year, in a county that many think is boring. It also goes through some lovely parts of Watford I’d not been to before, except when it goes by the big Tesco and Colne Valley Retail Park.

It’s curious though that after being a beautiful and quite wide river still fairly near the source in London Colney it then disappointingly becomes (and remains for a fair while) basically a dry and overgrown ditch approaching the M25. Is this the result of the dry summer we had or is it always like this?

Sadly there is not always a clear path next to it either side (if you can even get there as it goes through private lands) and my progress was brought to a halt where it runs near Merchant Taylors’ School. But there are sections at least that are definitely worth walking in their own right.
