What did he have for breakfast?! I'll have some of that!

    Wait, I thought we'd decided he's absolutely gash/*****/useless?

Very, very good today, nice to see him back in form. Think people forget he's only just 24 years old, and will naturally be inconsistent. He has limitations, but when used correctly he's decent at this level.

Does remind me in many ways of Doucoure, I'm not quite sure why he doesn't do that more often tbf!

He lacks the confidence at times to really go in for tackles fearing he'll end up leaving space. It's not his natural game I feel, but if he could add it he'd be a battering ram of a player.

He's far more consistently poor than he is good, though - very occasionally in a games played ratio he elevates himself to competent/useful.

Obviously, given our current predicament, I'm very much hoping that will change, but we really don't need to be pretending that he hasn't been largely fairly limited-to-hopeless in his time here, the bulk of this season so far included.

Not to mention the quite insane extremity of his one-footedness that was still in evidence today, even in doing well and having a good game.

    Disagree, personally.

Think he's had a few very poor displays, mainly when the team have been poor in general.

For me he's usually a 6/10, but is capable of the 8/10 type performance we saw today.

I also do think the general sentiment on him would be very different if he was a 24 year old English lad called Johnny Smith that we'd signed from Derby for £3m, but that's a separate point.

I'm not sure 24 is an age at which we could say it's normal to be 'naturally inconsistent'. Asprilla at 18, sure.

Even if he was Johnny Smith I'm pretty confident I'd (a) still think he's pretty **** and (b) wonder why he's got that redundant h in this name.

There are some things he does really well: retaining possession, screening space in open play and (when he does it) progressing the ball forward via dribbling. There are some things he is not very good at: passing the ball quickly and progressively, using his right foot, marking at set pieces.

A smart coach should be able to harness his skills to create a good but limited role for him at this level. Hard to be the alternative to Louza who is too good for the league in pretty much every way but if utilised correctly there’s no reason he can’t be a playoff standard midfielder.

None of that obviates how frustrating his acquisition was given that it wouldn’t have been hard to find a better/higher potential CM in January when we were on the PL for £3-4m.

No denying he was very good today. He won the ball in the lead up to the fourth as well. Like the team though, why are these kind of performances delivered so inconsistently? JP in the 10 helps him massively because JP will pick the ball up from anywhere and carry it 30 yards, so Kayembe's lacking of progression isn't as evident.

I think one of the major problems, that we obviously didn't see today, is that his strong reluctance to move and show for the ball is very costly against teams with strong/active midfields. Choudhury has the same problem, but at least it isn't his job to be the 'creative' central midfielder. Louza seems like De Bruyne when he comes in because he's prepared to do that, more than any other single impact.

Unless Kayembe can change that it will still hinder our progression massively and continue to cost us possession and control.

Bilic mentioned the fitness levels again today, saying it needs to improve. Given the number of injuries and inconsistency, you do wonder whether Edward’s had done enough to get the players fit enough

Does he mean "injuries" when mentioning fitness tho ?
These players are professionals and being fit should be a basic requirement of them

I’m not sure he is saying the players are unfit - more that fitness levels can improve. I think he is probably scratching his head as to why we are so inconsistent. Personally I think it is more attitude than anything else.

Tbf one of the injuries was Davis, who has been a bit of a sick note in his career, and the other one was Choudhury who runs around a lot and who hasn't had much break at all (and his didn't seem overly serious at all)

He was referring to physical fitness, and even mentioned it may be linked to the number of injuries suffered.

Probably his 3 most consistent performances so far. Needs to keep driving forward as we become a far more expansive side when he takes risks

We have completely fallen apart in midfield without the Congolese Modric. The trouble is we looked absolutely sh!te in there with him anyway.

I know some inexplicably loathe Kayembe, but I genuinely think he's been missed since his injury.

We need a boring metronomic passer of the ball in midfield. Choudhury is excellent at making tackles, but has absolutely awful pass selection and range

Nobody “loathes” Kayembe. He’s just a poor footballer that we wasted money on because our our owner’s relationship with Mogi Bayat. Simple as that.

He passes the football extremely well. Doesn't matter if it's a 2 yard pass, it makes it to our player nearly 9 times out of 10.

It's just my opinion that we're a better side all round with him playing than not. The fact he contributed to 9 wins prior to his injury is testament to that.

Maybe @reids could prove me wrong, but I don't think there's anything that he's particularly weak at, other than preferring to use his dominant foot. I certainly don't think he's a "poor footballer" by any metric

Just my opinion as well that he's dreadful. A one footed player who can make short passes, and loses possession if he gets caught on his useless foot.

Can't get rid of him quick enough.

Not looking for a quarrel, but out of interest which of our players do you think are good and worthy of a place in the XI ? Genuine question, just interested to know.

In championship - new CBs, Cathcart, Sierralta, Chowders, Sema, Kone/Asprilla (need time to develop though), Davis, Sarr (unless he keeps his performances like last night), JP, Louza

Dunno about Martins/Araujo/Ferrera yet. Gosling did okay when called upon but now a write off. Probably have missed a few, but the keepers, full backs are duds and the midfield is light. And Cleverly, Kabasele, Kalu and Kayembe steal a living, as did Manaj and Bayo before they were tinned after 6 months

I don't have any stats to back this up as I still don't have Statsbomb access (been almost 2 months without it for everyone in both teams!) so only going on what i've seen rather than with cold hard figures!

Personally I think he's a bit of an all rounder but also doesn't really excel at anything. He sometimes tries to move the ball forward but mostly plays it safe in possession. He puts in a decent enough shift defensively but also probably isn't of the level of that a side aiming for the top 6 can rely on (as a starter anyway). If we partner him next to Hamza we have someone that's basically the same player as Hamza but inferior in pretty much everyway, this could lead to a breakdown in moving the ball from midfield to attack which is far from ideal. So basically Kayembe is decent enough, but only as a backup to Hamza and shouldn't partner him unless there's no other viable alternatives.

    Fair enough.

I think he's a better all round passer than Choudhury, and I also feel like Choudhury played better with the simple option that Kayembe provided him. That might be more a reflection of Choudhury's own limitations though
