I Despise This Football Club

I’d bet a lot of money Gino looks to sell if he can’t get us up this (or next season). The family have zero interest in owning a club in the lower leagues even in the mid-term. They’ve done their time down in the EFL and anymore than single fleeting seasons down here, and I think that would be that for them. Which is what makes their current way of operating so hard to understand.

The PL and winning games is their currency - it allows their player trading vehicle to function. It’s splutters to a close if we remain in the EFL. As I say, if that were to look realistic, I bet we would see cost cutting all over the club and parachute payments funnelled into Gino’s pocket, sales of the asset players to further line them and wipe out his debt owed to him. Then they’d sell up rather cheaply and move on.

As for wanting us to lose games - I don’t think I’ll ever arrive at that point. But what I would say here is that I think losing games is the only way Gino eventually sells up. So do the ends justify the means? The man simply doesn’t care about approval ratings from the fans or his contemporaries in the footballing world. His decision making proves that.

We went up to the PL with no fans in the stadium at all. Gino won’t blink one iota if the stadium gets less full.

And as others have said - there isn’t the stomach for protest. We had claims of people planning on doing stuff at London Colney or at the Executive entrances last night…didn’t happen though. Fans will just choose apathy and decide not to go…that’ll be their protest. And it’s not one Gino cares about.

Lastly, returning to the point about ‘wanting’ us to lose games. I’ll be honest here - and I’m going against some of my BWO(!) bed-fellows here and their claims - but I don’t truly believe any of us want Watford to lose. I just don’t. I don’t think you can trick your instincts like that. But I think it’s a very real sense that:

When Watford used to win, it would set up the weekend. Endorphins flowing. But when we win now, it’s nothing more than gently pleasing. And soon forgotten.

When Watford used to lose, it could ruin a week. Now it barely even ruins the 10 mins after the final whistle.

I thank the Pozzo Family for all the good they’ve done. Undoubted high times and almost precedented success a few years ago. But they dragged the club through the mud in recent years. They’ve had ample time to change course and have refused to do so, instead doubling-down on all the aspects we hate about their ownership. And like I said, the feeling behind the scenes is it’s all being done with two-fingers firmly stuck up to the fans.

Pozzo isnt the club. The club to me are the fans, the local staff that work there and our community ethos. I totally understand your anger and resentment at Gino but things that are hidden in the dark will have a light shined upon them eventually.

I mentioned this a while ago but I just don't like football as a whole thing like I used to because of the money, the cheating, gamesmanship etc. Pandemic really brought this to a head. I will still go because I always have and I will certainly never want us to lose but, and I apricate this might be a different opinion to others, I don't blame Pozzo or Duxbury for any of this. There are certainly things I can blame them for but this is the way of football now. Gino doesn't care abut the fans, is anybody surprised? Do the Glazers? Does the new owner at Chelsea or the owner at Forest? They might say they do but they don't really.
I've seen a lot of posters say how they want their club back and a return to the good old days of GT and Elton and the players we had then. I would love that but that era is gone. It's all about money and pretty much nothing else
Do I want Gino gone? Probably because I think it's run it's course. Will a new owner return our club to how we fondly remember it? Probably not
    I'm blooming miserable now!

I don’t have a problem with the sentiment, but I think the football club is widely all of us, the stadium, the memories etc. So I’d be more comfortable if the title was qualified, as in I despise how this club is run or its owners etc.

I think I’d then add ‘football’ to that after last night. The match was a shocking example of how the modern game is constantly interrupted by minor injuries and over-engineered solutions. It’s a very simple sport or should be.

It's clear Jumbo doesn't want to support anyone else; they want to support something similar to their view of what WFC should be, but cannot find any vestige of that in the club Pozzo now owns. Despite the extreme nature of their expression of that, it's not a unique viewpoint.

I've been going for 60 years now & have had a ST for about 40 of those... and I've only been to 2 games this season. The TV scheduling ensured my carefully-planned early August holiday meant I was out of the country for the Sheff U match and hadn't landed in time to get to the Burnley match. That annoyed me, but then missing games due to a family gathering over August bank holiday & the death of the Queen didn't all that much. Then not being ar5ed to go to a midweek game when I had a stinking cold, something that would never have stopped me before, made me realise just how much my feeling of connection had dissipated. Sunday's game at Stoke made me feel 'maybe it WAS Edwards being unable to get the players to perform'....and then last night happened.

This is why I rarely take you seriously. You're so sure there is a right way to support the club - your way - and those who don't support it exactly that way deserve your contempt. The equivalent of a patronising covid-denier telling anyone who'll listen to 'wake up, sheeple'. A couple of people might engage but most roll their eyeballs and shake their heads.

Criticise the club, the manager/s, the players - fair enough. But don't presume you know what the majority of fans are thinking and how they react to a result, just because they're not exactly like you.

  27. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

I mean, a lot of them betray what they're thinking by how they outwardly react to a result don't they? You wouldn't have to have a Phd in psychology or be a mind reader to conclude that there's still a lot of people who are unperturbed by what they're seeing on the pitch, let alone off it. For example it would be odd to presume someone clapping the team off enthusiastically at full time after a stinking defeat is unhappy wouldn't it?

For the last year I’ve been living down the coast from Blackpool, I thought I’d sign up to their membership scheme to get tickets for when Watford visit. so, here we are 2 days away from that day and I simply cannot be bothered.
Yes the Pozzos and Duxbury are everything I despise In a human being, let alone the owner of the club I’ve loved for 60 years. As others have said, they are probably no better or worse than many of the new breed of owners in it purely for the money and certainly not for the love of the town, supporters or club.
Now there is not a single player in the squad who I relate to in anyway. They could not give a flying fig for anyone but themselves, only Bachman seems to show a modicum of empathy with the fans.
I cannot see a player at Watford getting a broken leg, they pull out of tackles just as they pull out of giving everything for the shirt.
The pipeline for the future, even with an injury crisis there is hardly a player in the under 23s pushing for a shirt.
As others have said, our fans are totally fickle, bought for a small dark room under the rookery, it’s painful to hear the we’ve lost the ball chants when they should be venting their anger at the players and owners who perpetually fish out dross, lies and disinterest.
I just wonder now how low we need to sink before change is forced on us. I’ve a feeling financially without promotion we will be in administration.
I cannot even envisage what will be at Vicarage Road in August 2023, I certainly won’t be there while Pozzo, Duxbury and the pathetic squad think they can continue taking the urine out of us.
The sad thing is the only individual with any connection to the club who will care that a large segment of the fan base is disenfranchised is dear old Luther.

Knew they were going to score the second and walked out as soon as it went in. But then cheered up a bit when I got to Cassiobury Drive and managed to get home without the 20 minute queue to get past the traffic lights on Hempstead Road because I'd left early. So the highlight of my night was getting away from Vicarage Road as fast as possible!

that’s not fair Jumbo. The early days of the Pozzos with a squad of Abdis, Vydras, Forrestierri etc was a beautiful thing. 2019 was a wonderful season - up there with one of the best in my supporting career.

last 3 years have been absolute crap. Everything. Bloody everything has changed. It’s as if they all went, sod it, we got annihilated in that cup final so let’s milk it for what it’s worth whilst we make Udinese work. And sod those English fans

I think the answer to that is obvious really. Most fans' who are passionate about the club and the game will support Watford to the bitter end "come hell or high water" (pun intended), and if that meant us being a League One club or worse (points deduction) to finally be rid of the toxic nature of how we are run behind the scences then I think the vast majority of the fanbase will stick by the club. It's the club the fans' love and want back, not the constant revolving door of managers and rubbish transfer windows which extends to the awful financial control of how we have amassed a massive debt over the last ten years. If our opening game one season is against Boreham Wood - and we have a new structure and management of the club in place, not a problem with me. GT and EJ worked for years to get Watford put on the football map. As fans, the least we can do is support the club through the good and bad times, and vent our frustrations when applicable.

The undeniable truth First Team Captain

    Yes **** right off !!

    Don't be so daft :)
It's perfectly possible for people to separate the owner from the team, hate one and love the other. However for much of last season it was possible to do both. Team being outclassed was acceptable, giving the impression they didn't care, wasn't.
I'm not sure you actually hate the club. I think you hate the owner and hate the fact that this means you can't feel the way about your club that you used to, leaving a void. Team wins mean wins for Gino and that takes away the enjoyment.
If they only bought us 3 years ago, I would hate them too.
In my book they have had more good years than bad but are on a real downward spiral atm and I worry where it will take us. There is clearly an issue between Gino and Scott. Gino has no obligation to talk to the fans but the failure to do so just gives the impression that we don't matter to him ,which may or may not be correct.
