Found last nights twitterspace quite good to be honest. Seems like the questions around finance are now being laid bare. Leventhal clearly knows something, probably cast out of the inner circle as a result. The Bayat info definitely stinks of something bad on the way in some way.

Basically that some people only report stories once they’re confirmed, he (and the Athletic) don’t operate that way and believe reporting rumours, whether they come off or not, is an important part of journalism

Just all a bit defensive really, he seemed to have French’s comments last week about the Sarr transfer stories fresh in his mind

Andrew French, as much as he gives a sense of calm in what is a chaotic transfer window, rarely seems to add his own views as to what's happening, I get the feeling that he's feeding back to us exactly what the board and what Edwards are saying, although it doesn't necessarily mean they're telling the full truth!

Nice new Twitter narrative. Kamara is played on the right because Sema is indispensable at LWB. Nothing to do with poor squad building you see.

Sema is crudely effective at this level in terms of output. If you can get him high enough up the pitch, he'll bumble past the odd player and put in some dangerous balls that will create chances and he'll weigh in with the odd goal himself.

The problem is that a wing back needs to be able to transition pretty quickly from defence to attack and back, and one thing King Ken is certainly not is quick (remember when Deeney proudly mentioned beating Ken in pre season sprints?). So whenever there's a fast break, he's miles behind the play and this also means when he goes forward, he can't get back quick enough leaving one (or sometimes two as they just can't help themselves) of our centre backs covering out wide and a gaping hole in it middle.

A left side of Kamara behind Ken does look good at this level but then that probably means a move away from Edwards' three at the back that he's definitely not wedded to.

What on earth is going on with the world? Apparently someone tweeted they wished Sam Ucko was dead last night, and he has been victim of aggressive words at the games themselves.

    It’s only a game :(

  8. Chumlax

    Chumlax Squad Player

In total fairness, and I don't defend or condone it or suggest that it's fine as a result, but they didn't actually tweet that they wished he was dead - he just phrased it that way whilst relaying it in response - they said something very similar to 'Lol, has Ucko roped himself yet?'.

As I said, nothing positive or acceptable about that, and entirely in poor taste and classless, but contextually also not someone actually wishing him dead/making a threat.

    Awful.

A natural conclusion to a stream of abuse, of varying levels, directed at a young lad who has done absolutely nothing wrong whatsoever.

Some people just can't handle their emotions when it comes to their football club losing a match.

I was talking to a couple of blokes at work this week about this. One is a Birmingham fan and the other is Cov, and they both said the same things about the way their current fanbases have changed in the same way ours has. They have fans on Twitter absolutely hammering the club owners and/or managers and/or players every week. There seems to be no justification in some people eyes for losing a game of football or playing badly. It is almost a reflection of life whereby some people have to be angry and offended about something - the ability to shrug off a loss or a bad performance is impossible without going apeshit first.

  11. WatfordTalk

    WatfordTalk First Team

Yeah, it's definitely got worse in the last few years, for whatever reason.

Before from my experience it seemed to be anger and frustration, mixed with encouragement within the stadium for 90 mins, then some critique in the pub afterwards, then look forward to next week.

Now it doesn't matter if it's a new signing, a proven performer, club legend, young manager, whatever. If you have a bad couple of months, or even couple of games, you're a useless cvnt, a dud, a pussy, waste of time/space money etc etc

Or, in Ucko's case, if you're not as apoplectic as you're *supposed* to be, you're an apologist, a shill, or should kill yourself.

Nobody should be hounded off any platform and they should be free to take part as they wish - but I really am surprised that for someone who has had the documented problems that Ucko has had, quite why he remains on Twitter.

From his posts, I just don’t see how the positives outweigh the negatives for him.

Social media has completely changed the nature of the discourse, made it harsher and far more aggressive. Football has always attracted extreme types but in a crowd of thousands their voices tended to be lone ones. When you see or hear someone shout something absolutely ridiculous or offensive you see that it's an isolated incident and people slowly move away. In contrast, social media acts like a magnet for that extremism and it all gathers together and escalates.

I wonder if the Arsenal Fan TV-style phenomenon has also had an effect. Opinions have to be ever more extreme to gain any traction. There's a circus element to it too. The viewing figures for AFTV are higher when they've had a terrible defeat and people knew that their oddball contributors would turn their outrage up to 11. Calling players an managers a disgrace for entertainment is a bit of a strange way to support your club, to me at least.

Once you're an active contributor on social media – Twitter especially – there's a pressure to comment on everything. It must be extremely draining, especially as thoughts are reduced to a punchline and there's the risk of attracting so much opprobrium.

Pretty low of you to mix anger at Pozzo with what was said to Ucko. I am apoplectic with our owners. These people are vile and are destroying our club. You don't see it which is fine.

But don't throw me in with idiots on twitter, a platform I don't use.

Do you think those comments would have been made if Ucko was completely neutral, or more critical of Pozzo. For me, they wouldn't have. The abuse he has received varies massively, as I alluded to in a previous post. You're entitled to be apoplectic, as Ucko is entitled to not be. Re-read my post again, because you've misunderstood it.

I didn't 'throw you in' with anything. I didn't even mention you. If you've posted abusive things towards someone who doesn't deserve it, then you're in a group of people who are abusive to someone who doesn't deserve it. Obviously there are different ends to that spectrum, and you'd be pretty far away from the vile comments made last night.

You seem to get wound up a fair bit by quite a lot of tweets and tweeterers, considering you don't use it?

Twitter fascinates me - I read it a lot but don't feel the need to contribute, apart from the time I called Rookery Mike a "coward" which I think is my only tweet in a decade.

In my experience, the pro Pozzo crowd are more aggressive than the Pozzo out crowd on twitter. They are militant and support the owner more than the club, dedicating time to policing the airwaves.

Obviously what was said to Ucko was completely unacceptable and should not be linked with either point of view. I'm not sure I'd put Ucko in either camp to be honest - he seems pretty balanced.

Call me harsh but I don’t have a huge amount of sympathy for Ucko. Don’t get me wrong, I do not for one second condone what was said to him, but he’s never been shy of mentioning his mental health issues on a platform he has utilised to gain followers and ultimately gain access to the club. He has benefited from twitter, but we all know it’s full of absolute low lifes, so unfortunately if he’s going to mention his mental health issues relatively regularly it’s going to be used against him. Again, I’m not saying that’s right, but it’s more or less a fact of life. If he doesn’t like it then he shouldn’t provide ammunition, or he shouldn’t be on twitter, but obviously he benefits from being on twitter, so the horrific nature of the platform and the people who use it means he’ll have to learn to take the rough with the smooth.

Genuinely, what an awful attitude to have.

Ucko has used his platform to share his experience. Seeing people speak openly about their own mental health can encourage and empower others to talk about their own experiences.

To suggest that people should avoid these types of discussions, and allow them to be silenced because of a tiny minority of arseholes, is a very strange stance to take.

Are you also of the view that black players shouldn't have Instagram because morons send them racist abuse after games?

It isn't as black and white as 'come off Twitter if you don't want to be abused' but at the same time if you behave in a certain way and constantly try to make yourself the centre of attention and chase retweets/engagement then you're naturally going to annoy people and one or two idiots will always take it too far both online and in person at games.

The banana nonsense towards the end of last season for instance was embarrassing and I seem to remember him taking great joy at the time about 'rattling' certain fans.

Edwards and four players went to Gino to complain about Giaretta which has resulted in his removal.

Apparently someone shouted at Gino on Saturday. Nothing offensive, just the need for defenders I think.

Went to Gino to complain with backing of 4 players and Giaretta apparently removed but of course nothing from the club on this

If it’s true, it’s a damning indictment of the strangle hold Gino has, even as owner.

    1. I fail to believe no HC as ever complained directly about Giraldi/Giaretta’s closeness to team affairs.

    2. Edwards should not need the backing of senior players for Gino to be swayed.

    3. Gino should know for himself just how nuts it is.

I have to say, if good ol' Unc's scoop is true, what exactly can it have been that Giaretta was doing to interfere, exactly? It must have been fairly seismic, perhaps on the level of hiring out the pitch to a roller derby group every single day of the week - otherwise, I'm not sure it fully explains how we appear as a team to be yet to benefit from the luxury of a training session so far under Rob's tenure.

I guess on point 2 that any coach will be fobbed off and it's only if it looks like the squad are in revolt that Gino will listen.

At least shows unity between coach and players

As someone who has close family members who suffer from mental health and/or work in mental health, I find this attitude toxic. One constant in mental health issues is encouragement to talk about them. Not doing so, in any context, can only make them worse, so anyone effectively victim-shaming is extremely unpleasant in my book.

If you genuinely are this callous and unfeeling, and cannot bring yourself to express empathy with an individual struggling with their mental health, then at least keep quiet. Expressing a lack of sympathy for him publicly will not help him, and might actively contribute to a worsening of his condition, should he learn of your attitude. In that respect, you are no better than the Twitter trolls you allegedly condemn.

  35. a19tgg

The best thing for his mental health is to get off Twitter, the Twitter trolls aren’t going anywhere, regardless of what I do or say. It doesn’t make me callous, it makes me a realist.
