Sadly I'm agreed on your final point, but just because we're in the Championship, it doesn't suddenly completely change the type of player we have, Choudhury and Kayembe might not quite be Premier League level destroyers, but it certainly doesn't mean they are Championship level creative midfielders, and Gaspar isn't a La Liga level full-back anymore, but he's certainly not a Championship level flying machine

Couldn’t care less. There’s not a manager in the world that can get a tune out of this disjointed, inferior squad.

Honestly, I'd keep him unless something drastic happens like us being dragged into a relegation battle, he may or may not be the man for the job, but can we at least have a look and see rather than panic and appoint the next Hodgson who comes along?

The club either do what they said they'd do and back him, meaning keeping him for at least this season and using the next two windows to sort out this squad, or they sack him and the merry-go-round continues as usual. It'll clearly be the latter, these f*ckers have already gone back on their word this summer.

It’s only worth backing the manager if he’s showing signs he’s worth keeping. Personally I can’t see any evidence that we’re heading in the right direction under him. I wouldn’t want the club to stand by him just because he’s got the lucky ticket as being the one the club have to prove a point with.

The issue I have is that Edwards at Forest Green developed a horrible team
I.E. bullied their way , eventually, out if L2 .
Maybe bullying can only get you so far ?

That's fine but I find it baffling that anyone can think that Edwards is the issue here. Sure, his subs could be better and he'll f*ck up from time to time but the squad is a midtable squad, there's no getting away from it. A couple of big name players in there who turn up occasionally, but the defence and midfield at the moment aren't fit for a promotion chasing team. Do Kabasele, Cathcart, Bachmann, Kayembe, WTE, Sema, Gosling or Bayo get in any of the top 6 teams? I would say no they don't, so why are these players playing and starting for us?

That's why I'm not fussed if we're challenging for promotion or not, the squad isn't up to it so why is Edwards expected to turn turd into gold in only his second season as a manager? Keep Edwards, listen to what he needs and sell the players that aren't good enough over the next two windows. It won't happen of course but I can dream.

The players are largely under-performing and there are a lot who are not good enough, but we are a little blinded by Watford issues at times. Look at Sunderland. A newly promoted team, had Luke O’Nien at centre back, and their overall squad is not as good as ours. Most of the teams we play that is the case, yet we look inferior to everyone we’ve played to date, apart from Birmingham away where we looked in control of the match.

For me, Edwards is under-performing in terms of what he’s achieving with the team, no matter how flawed we all think the squad is, it’s still a lot better than the majority of teams we’re playing.

I think we got a few fortunate results at the beginning of the season. Maybe our opponent gave us a little too much respect fearing Dennis, Sarr and Pedro. That respect or fear is now gone and Watford have already been found out.

I think results and performances are going to deteriorate from here on in and it’s inevitable Edwards will go.

I couldn’t see much reason to keep Rob after the last match, but I think he did fine today.

We generally controlled possession, and there were short periods where we actually built pressure and made chances, especially at the start of the second half.

We were well on top until we got numerous injuries. Cathcart, Asprilla, Kamara, Cathcart and Choudhury all weren’t running well at the end, whilst Davies was gassed.

It’s pretty hard to make tactical substitutions to win the game when you’re being forced to fight constant fires with thimbles of water. Missing Sarr and Louza also doesn’t help.

Our key weakness is the inability to pass through the lines, a bit like Man United without Eriksen. Which means we end up slowly passing it in our own half.

If an obviously high quality manager (a bit like when Silva ceases available), I’d be happy to switch, as Edwards has clear weaknesses currently. But given our issue predominantly is a very thin and injury prone squad, I’d rather keep him than roll the dice on another random.

Genuinely not sure they are underperforming, we'd have expected more goals and assists from the forwards for sure, but they can produce if they're not given the ball. I think your note on the early part of the season (well, the Sheffield United game more than anything, we were outplayed by Burnley and WBA) is interesting, it was a lot like watching our Championship games 2 seasons ago where we didn't play well, but teams were so scared of us. Probably a function of a) having 3 quality, motivated forwards, and b) I think it really goes to show how with just one or two players missing, it can make a huge difference, because Sheffield United were pathetic that day yet have been imperious since

The only thing I would say is that the choice of players to bring on was strange, I don't have to have watched today's game to know Kabasele is a danger

I heard someone say after that substitution with WTE and Kabs on the pitch at the same time there’s no way we aren’t conceding. How right he was.

Apparently WTE was quite good today? I'd have moved him to RB and left Kabasele where he belongs personally...

Sorry but the starting line up he put out today has enough quality to win at home against most Premier League clubs. The fact it is unable to is either down to Rob's instructions, or a lack of effort, or both.

Could be that RE is out of his depth, or the squad is still on a lack of confidence hangover from last season. Either way I don't think there's any point sacking Edwards, despite the fact he's currently underachieving.

Show the squad that we're capable, as a club, of sticking with a manager through a poor run of form. Hope that we're still in the mix come January, and fix the deficiencies in the squad from the summer.

LOL WHAT?! That is the wildest thing I’ve read here in ages!

Bachman - Meh, would be one of the worst #1s in the Prem.

Cathcart - Lol, see previous 4 relegations or whatever it is.

    WTE - Lol, ok.

Hause - Enough Prem experience to show he’d be probably okay if the rest of the team was strong.

Kamara - Was passable in our relegation season.

Kayembe - Not a Prem starter.

Choudhury - Not a guaranteed Prem starter hence he came here on loan.

    Asprilla - Nope, too young.

Pedro - Would get minutes in the Prem, off the bench with a few starts, that’s fair.

    Sema - Nope.

Davis - Has widely been available on loan for a few years, ends up at Championship club yet again,

This line up would finish absolute rock bottom in the Premier League. Who do you genuinely think we’d beat? Bournemouth?

I agree, although some of the line ups (and bench) we've put out so far this season haven't been massively impressive, thanks to injuries.

But Cathcart RB aside, there's not much wrong with yesterday's team, and it should be getting comfortable wins against most in the division

He was up until about the last five minutes when Cathcart, who's been our best right back this season, inadvertently touched a through ball past him. From then he lost his head.

    Ha fair enough .

    We’ve all been there!

Yes attacking wise probably a fair point but our defence will gift chances to any side and cannot cope with any pressure .

It was like we were grimly holding on against a PL team tbh - not a new promoted side throwing on a load of kids .

    Just very predictable unfortunately.

So these post game quotes concern me, to be frank:

    upload_2022-9-18_9-18-46.png

Apart from the fact that it's frighteningly reminiscent of his comments about fielding Kamara on the right of defence way back in the mists of pre-season, it's being presented here as development. But it's not. It's the exact same thing we've seen in several of the most recent games - Boro and Rotherham both prime examples, and very noted at the time, where we had that 20 minute period in the second half of the first half, having gone behind stupidly, where we started to interchange like a tinpot Barcelona and take control of the game. Then, of course, we came back out again after the break and slumped anew to the patented Watford Wind-Down ™.

The only reason he can note this against Sunderland (playing at home, with them being without either of their two star attackers and starting the game without a recognised centre forward) is because we failed so utterly to even manage that 20-minute period in the midweek shame against Blackburn. It's being held out here as development and progress, and said that we 'need to see that sort or performance for 90 minutes or more', but actually that is at least the fourth game in a row where the exact same thing has been true (if that) and nothing has subsequently changed. It's the very definition of stasis.

I don't love the idea that we're in this Groundhog Day position with our performances, and I especially don't like the pretence from the head coach that being there is actually some marker of progress, or indeed that we aren't actually in it.

Certainly agree we need to play well for more than 20 minutes if we are going to match the clubs expectations particularly at home to a newly promoted side with injuries.

    Phew!

Now that I agree with, although what I will say is, it’s not necessarily the individuals, it’s how they perform when they come together as a team. They don’t hide each others deficiencies.

For example, Choudhury & Kayembe both good enough at this level but not together as a midfield.

I think people have forgotten that we were absolute dross in many games during the last promotion season, even under Xisco. We had a few quality players that won games for us but we certainly didn't dominate every game. Hopefully after the break we have a chance to get Louza, JP, Sarr and Davis on the pitch consistently and their quality should be winning us games at this level.

I'm also gonna say this, knowing full well it will attract pelters, but JP and Sarr aren't that good.

Sure they are better than a lot of players in this division and can play a role in a Prem side, but they're not like having a 25 goal striker or a midfielder who dictates every game at this level.

Sarr pops up one game in 5 with something and JP does a couple of mazy runs every game that usually end in a successful tackle or a goal kick.

Neither of them are going to cover the failure to recruit defenders or midfielders.

Disagree with you on JP, he'd absolutely rip this division to shreds if we actually gave him the ball, but we've seen what Sarr is like for 3 years, he'll pop up with a fair amount of goals and assists, but in general, he'll be completely anonymous

I’d pay a fair bit of money to see us bully just one team for one game.

Gino has assembled the most disjointed bunch of wimps of his tenure to date. And failed to sell the even bigger wimps who were still on the books this summer.

This is no one else’s fault. Edwards should be getting more out of them ON PAPER. But i proportion zero blame to him that he isn’t. This club doesn’t scout a players desire, character or personality. They scout their ability to make a quick buck on them or if it helps grease the wheels of some other deal elsewhere.

I think we have a coach who wants to be a serious coach - but he’s accepted a job at a club that isn’t a serious footballing operation. He’s believed he could change that - and Gino is strenuously fighting against that belief.
