Make or break for Edwards on Saturday then? Poor performance and another loss and that's him probably gone based on how the club have operated in the past.

    a) I'd contend we're not a well run company

    b) if you bring in a leader to turn things around you generally allow them to change the structure/processes not just force them into adopting the same ones that you got into the mess

I reckon they will give him a lot more time, and rightfully so. Sense this is one aspect they are keen to change in how we are run,

Since he was very much Duxbury’s man (according to him) you’d assume he won’t be subsequently sacked after 10 games. Unless Duxbury is a liar of course, which seems unlikely.

Think he's in trouble as soon as a gap opens up between us and the last play off place. I think they'd give him a bit more leeway on being in touch with automatics but if we start falling away into mid table then he'll get the chop.

Being outfought and humbled at home by the scum on the 23rd October would probably do it.

He needs to be given way more time. Only 9 games into the season and he’s hardly been able to use Hause and Davis, with Louza returning (at some point). It is still going to take time for things to click, and we’re only actually 3 points off of 3rd place…. we’ve still got 37 matches in the season. The Pozzos haven’t backed him nearly as much as they should have. Mind you if Kabasele keeps starting then my opinion might swing slightly though….not sure why we aren’t trying WTE and Sierralta like we did last time we were in the Championship (though the style of play is obviously different), but obviously Edwards knows and sees a lot more than I do..

My genuine question is do we really think anyone could get a tune out of this group of players? Their only consistency in the past 3 years has been how awful the vast majority of them have been (other than the odd ocassion) and we've had so many coaches that have continually failed that I struggle to see how another change could remedy that?

    a) I wasn’t restricting my comments to well-run companies. Even the vast majority of badly-run companies give incumbents time to settle.

    b) Not at all. Often new managers are given department personnel and processes and expected to work within those parameters, albeit with room to make some limited changes.

We’ve been awful for three and a bit years. Why pin it on the guy who’s been here for 3 months?

I’m not convinced he’s that great, but he can’t be useless or he wouldn’t have won the league with FGR. Our issues run far deeper and we will never address them without a change of culture that includes keeping a head coach for several seasons.

While this is true, there's a baseline level of competence that you can immediately bring to any new job while you learn the specifics of the new environment that allow for more advanced performance.

When I change employers, I don't suddenly forget how to do the basics and I'm capable of adding instant value even if it takes time to learn all of the individual systems and how they link together.

There's a difference between being upset because someone isn't instantly performing at peak levels in a new job and being concerned because they don't even seem to be up to the basics. I can't even see what our team is trying to do on the pitch at the moment, never mind see any signs of improvement. Contrast this to other coaches of recent times.

Zola came in and, while initial results were bad, you could see things happening on the pitch and it seemed like progress was being made every game.

Sannino came in and reverted to basics, instilled a base level of fitness and defensive mentality and told us the attacking play would come later. You could see the defensive results on the pitch immediately and we were clearly going somewhere, as the attacking play slowly improved every week. The style might not have been everyone's cup of tea, and the players didn't seem to like him, but the point here is that there was clearly a plan that was being visibly executed.

I honestly have no idea what we're trying to do under Edwards, and it doesn't seem to be progressing in any direction I can make out (except perhaps backwards). We're not even doing the basics right, and that's worrying. I'm not expecting miracles, and there's no reason to expect us to be the finished article at this point, but I *do* expect to see the basics in place, rather than us being comprehensively outplayed by teams with a fraction of our resources. We can't rely on Sarr scoring from his own half on a regular basis in order to win games.

I think so. Starting matches in non-doze mode would be a start.

But again, this isn't a new thing. Lest we forget we hold the record as the team for the quickest ever premier league goal conceded. And look who was at the back in that game! But on top of this last season there were countless games we were behind quickly, or after a prolonged ish stoppage in play we conceded. And that's now been continuing over 4 or 5 coaches.

I know football is all about opinions, but I just can't see what Rob can do with this group or what anyone else could do. We have a current team full of players on the decline who have almost consistently over the past 2 years (and more in some other cases) failed week in week out in front of our own eyes as fans!

Indeed. It's difficult to do a complete overhaul of a squad, but I think we made a mistake not making a huge effort to marginalize Cathcart and Kabasele. They are proven pillars of failure, extremely comfortable in their contracts and heavily declining. Removing their loser mentality would have been a big benefit even if we couldn't shift them from the club on their overly generous contracts. Absolute poster boys of Pozzo squad mismanagement, and incredibly we are stuck with Kabasele next year.

We have to break the habit of firing coaches the moment we hit a lean patch. If that means sticking with Edwards (no matter how unappealing that becomes) then so be it.

The pair of them who were in the back 2 against Saints in the fastest ever goal, I also recall them both being there where we managed to throw away a 2 goal lead against Everton in first half injury time. There's countless others I'm sure.

As mentioned everyone is entitled to have their opinion on RE, but I just can't see anyone doing any better with the players we've got. The club really is in a fine mess at the moment because of the leadership, and if they really are wanting to change (as they said for the umpteenth time) then they need to stick with that. The question is if we can actually afford to from a financial perspective

I’m impressed. You sound like an ideal appointment. :)

Sadly, it takes some of my employees a little longer to settle in, but most prove very productive when they do, which is my point.

None of them have forgotten the basics but, during the bedding-in process, their decisions can look odd to outsiders, such as individuals in other departments, who do not see the mechanisms of their decision making, nor the circumstances under which they are operating.

Sometimes I will get negative feedback from those outsiders. I’ll make the new employee aware of that, but will continue to support them and will defend them to the critic, because I can see the full picture and can see they are making progress in adjusting to their role. Hopefully, that is what is happening to Edwards.

You mention about Edwards' competence, but what about the players? I don't think it's fair to compare his job to Zola's, who had a lot of new players who had to get used to England, but ultimately, they were a great bunch, and he failed to get them promoted, Edwards has a few great players, but overall a far worse squad of players to pick from, I'm not sure anyone can magic out Kabasele's brainfarts or magic in some creativity into the midfield

Now we know this is on the cards. Most of our players wouldn’t have heard of them and won’t give a stuff who they are or the significance of the game. They will go at us from minute one and we’ll react about the 91st minute trying to claw back a 3 goal deficit.
