I genuinely believe Edwards is the most tactically inept manager we have had under the Pozzos. Including Xisco Munoz who had a great smile but no idea regarding tactics.

Probably what you get for appointing a guy with one season of management experience in League Two generally relying on 2 free scoring strikers and good wingbacks which we don’t have 2 leagues above .

Previously working with young players developing them which is against the Pozzos model .

Xisco had a far better squad at his disposal, yet we were still absolutely toilet on more than one occasion. I don't think it's fair yet to compare Edwards to the rest of the gang as he's definitely got one of the worst Pozzo squads to deal with, only the Vydra and Abdi-less 13/14 squad comes close in that regard

Yep. Imagine having Italian owners but continually appointing hopeless terds from other countries (or senile OAPs from that great managerial nation).

And our drooling fanbase lap it up every time.

  5. I Blame Pozzo

    I Blame Pozzo First Team

Someone wrote a while back that Pozzo had his heart broken by Silva beggering off to Everton.

That may or may not be true but he's certainly lost whatever semblance of the plot he had since then.

I don't know what to think anymore. Sacked before Saturday, after Saturday?

Nothing matters until Pozzo leaves. He hasn't learned from numerous mistakes repeated ad nauseam over the last five years.

Brilliant for the ground and the infrastructure but he doesn't have his father's feel or understanding of the sport.

    Ciao!

That’s not quite true. The recruitment of Javi Gracia was a good one, but the decision to sack him 4 games (?) into the season after the Cup Final was catastrophic and we’ve never really recovered.

I don't understand the point you're both trying to make here - if he was perceived to be doing a good job with what he has at his disposal by those behind the scenes, then they won't feel the need to sack him regardless of whether he toes the party line in public.

Ultimately, I'm sure the Pozzos would still much prefer that Edwards showed enough promise that they need not consider sacking him.

And how do you know that that they've actually not just given him enough rope with which to hang himself? For instance only those behind the scenes will really know whether Edwards really has been foolish enough to genuinely believe that Kamara was a good option at RWB, or whether he just said it in public while pointing out to the Pozzos it was insufficient. The club will surely be judging him on the stance he's taken behind the scenes, as empty towing the party line platitudes are usually a given for a manager.

Surely it’s pretty simple to understand? If he says he’s happy with the squad the blame lays squarely at his door. If he says he’s unhappy with the squad and didn’t get the players he wanted them the blame lays elsewhere.

He maybe isn't but doesn't want to say so in public as he knows what will happen...

Mind you probably won't make much difference.

Let’s just hope he’s not tied up in NDAs like the rest of them and actually spills the beans when he’s sacked.

Only in the eyes of the public - again you're trying to judge him by unsurprising empty puff pieces to the press.

But the board will know if he was actually happy with the squad behind the scenes or not and will surely ultimately be basing their decision in whether to fire him or not based on the judgement he has or hasn't shown in their private discussions.

Yes but if they knew privately he was unhappy with the squad, then they obviously ignored that and felt they knew better, so when he’s sacked that won’t come into it.

  13. lowerrous

Why wouldn't it come into it?!

If they realised that they had a manager who actually spoke sense behind the scenes and knew what he was talking about, then that would be a reason to keep him, not ditch him.

  14. a19tgg

You’re completely missing the point. They won’t think he’s talking sense because they believe they’ve given him a good enough squad.

I don't believe we should sack Edwards, and it would be a huge shame if we did.

It's very clear that once again the Pozzos stitched up a manager/head coach with another summer of rotten recruitment - Bayo and Manaj are both dreadful players and shouldn't be anywhere near the starting line up but we spent £5M on the former to line the pockets of one of Gino's mates, once again. I actualyl think Hause COULD be a good signing, but his injury record since signing seems pretty bad - let's hope it's just bad luck rather than a sign of him being injury prone.

It's frankly bizarre to me that we're 9 games into the season and people genuinely think they've seen enough to not be upset about the owners once again jumping the gun and making a stupid decision. I agree we haven't truly dominated a game for 90 minutes yet and there have been a couple of dodgy performances, but there's also been some good for me.

If he does go any time soon, barring an absolute nosedive in results that sees us slide down the table, Pozzo and Duxbury have massive questions to answer in my position. I thought Rob would be backed 'come hell or high water'. He's been served a sh*t sandwich, like so many before him, and yet people still suckle at the teet of the powers that be.

You're getting in to the realm of over-speculation again.

When it was obvious to every man and his dog that our central midfield didn't have enough legs in the first couple of games we immediately went out and signed Choudhury. The RWB situation has also clearly at least been under consideration if all the press articles about it at the close of the window are anything to go by. Although it's likely the owners may have made some mistakes I don't think they're entirely blind either.

Without knowing who actually thought what about certain aspects of the squad we simply don't know whose judgement was closest to the truth.

But looking at the squad we do have, I think most observers would still agree that it's at least good enough that we should be playing better than we currently are.

  17. lowerrous

    He really hasn't.

He started the game yesterday with what most would consider the best attacking options in the division at his disposal, yet we didn't manage a shot.

I'm not convinced yet that even if we gave him Man City's squad he'd know what to do with them.

Well Sarr went off early injured and Davis only came on but I agree potentially those 2 and Pedro should be more than good enough to get goals if fit:

But we are still hampered by the defence .

  19. lowerrous

Davis looked fit enough that he was available to start.

I'm not sure Sarr even really touched the ball before he went off injured, and that was 30 minutes in!

I respectfully disagree. I simply cannot make the signings of Bayo and Manaj (albeit the latter didn’t start yesterday) make sense in my mind in terms of how he wants to play.

I also think it’s painfully obvious that the defence has been woefully neglected for at least 3 years. This hasn’t solely impacted Edwards but it’s not doing him any favours.

  21. lowerrous

    lowerrous First Team

If he doesn't think Bayo fits in with how he wants to play, then he could have started with Davis instead and kept Bayo as an impact sub again!

I agree with you on that, but if one was to consider that we are not well stocked with good CBs, I don't know why you'd stick with a formation that has 3 of them on the pitch at the same time. Neither you or I also know the extent to which Edwards was content with the CBs we had available. We did sign Hause at least, but did he think one of the rest would be up to partnering him?

Maybe he sacked him in a fit of pique when he refused to play the marquee signing he was given by Pozzo; the one he didn't want as his system didn't use wingers.

Remember, Fuxbury told French 'we have a very good defence'. That attitude encapsulates the whole problem at the club.

No matter how unbalanced our squad may be, to my mind the total lack of energy we show rings the loudest alarm bell. He seems incapable of motivating the players. They start every game in a totally reactive frame of mind, probably because RE has not instilled any default playing style for them to implement.

Also is calling an Italian bloke "Pizza" supposed to be some kind of insult? If anything it just sounds a bit bigoted from the person saying it.

'Les rosbifs' is a common term of insult the French make towards the English...a bit childish of the Frogs I've always thought.

When my cousin's ex-husband goes to Paris for the 6 Nations, he wears a t-shirt with the slogan 'je ne suis pas anglais; je suis gallois' to try to ensure he gets seved a beer quicker.

Wasn't the derogatory term the French used 'Le Rosbifs'?

It's not really a big deal, but is a bit odd.

Re: Bayo - fair point, but isn't Davis struggling for fitness?

I think the formation is his preference, but I do think he should be a bit more flexible unless he's sending a message to the board.
